The early '90ies were rather unkind to many a Brit-Pop act, as the house/ hip-hop bandwagon swamped everyone like a tsunami, whether you liked it or not (similar fashion happened with DISCO in the 70ies, when everyone tried to make a quick buck with dance music). Problem with Kim were never the vocals (as she stands alone with some very few in pop that can naturally sing beautifully and strong), but it's the attitude and the packaging that feels anything but genuine. Besides, the world was just hungry for US acts and nothing that reminded them of the 80ies. Fact.
And 80s lyrics. So get you. Kim will always be great, but in the 80s which was the only true decade of real music, she was untouchable. In fact the only thing that paled among all the tonnes of diamonds everywhere is, ironically, that 'Kids' song.

There's also a large amount of No.1 hits from her 80s non-album collection (up to 18 songs make that pile up now, hopefully we'll get that last locked away "Another Step" era track 'That's The Mood I'm In' one day.
