Ali Americanos I gave myself carpal tunnel syndrome when I read SRV played 13s I went from 9’s to 13’s almost couldn’t play for a couple years had surgery lost a bunch of manual dexterity it sucked .. still really not right but wtf
@@rorygfan I feel you bro, I kinda play with heavy strings (For drop C/drop B tunnings), but damn, when you play on those lighter gauges, You just fly like a F16
I’m a very mediocre guitar player at best, never thought about trying to learn this song because I felt it would be difficult. It’s not super easy but it also not as hard as I thought it would be. Your way of teaching it is a big factor in me slowly, but correctly learning this song. Thank you so much
I put in a request for this song awhile ago and was super excited to see that you did it. This song changed my life and was the whole reason I picked up the guitar. It took a long time but thanks to this lesson I've achieved my dream of being able to play this song. I can't thank you enough!
@grabersm Sorry but RUclips has begun removing the audio from a lot of my song performances which I then have to take down. I don't know which ones they will do it to so I just can't spend the time on performance videos anymore not knowing whether RUclips will allow them or not. It is too much work for nothing. It sucks, but I think I will just stick to teaching the tunes from now on.
Okay, here we go! I’ve never played lead guitar before and you taught me “Lenny” and I’m pretty good at it only to get better with time/practice. 2022 is to learn Texas Flood Lesson. Wish me luck as I love this challenge…..
Thank you. My Strat got ripped off way back, never wanted to see another guitar again after that. About 2 years ago I realized how much I missed it. Bought an Epiphone LP Jr for really low cost, it sounds great, but not like my Stratocaster. So buying one Wednesday morning, probably change the pickups straight away, see how it sounds first though, I used to luv trying to sound like SRV. Scuttle Buttin’ and this song are two of my favourites. Thanks again!!
the key is F# since SRV version is played in e flat tuning on the 3rd fret. Its the G pentatonic scale but F# since the guitar is tuned down a half step.
Excellent tutorial, you had me shredding this in a fraction of the time I've spent on other sites learning simpler tunes! Thanks for posting this great lesson. :)
Don't forget to mention that the way you play this is to imitate rising waters (with the bends) and the water's waves with the double-stop slides. I've always thought that's the way he played it.
that phrase at around 11:55, I think its actually b string 8th fret twice, e string 6th fret once, bend e string 8th fret, play the bent string twice, bend back down, play 6th fret e string, play b string 8th fret.
Great lesson!! Let's not forget, however, that Stevie is basing his intro on Fenton Robinson's guitar intro. Fenton played on the original Larry Davis album, credit where credit is due.
always cracks me up when he describes how to get into e flat. If i'm at a level to play srv, not knowing what e flat means is like not knowing what your ass is
Brother, I hope you are well. I have watched your videos for years. Ive recently ended about a 8mos hiatus from playing guitar, (personal problems) and I picked up about were I left off on quite a few things that I feel you taught me. I owe you quite a few beers. One day we will meet. It will be glorious. There will be groupies, whiskey, stripper salt and ganja. We will jam into the next month. We will touch the past. P.S. I think youd be a better guitarist if you dropped a half step. You know how to harmonize, you have great bends, and youre knowledgeable of tone. Not that you're not a phenomenal and naturally gifted individual, but I think it would open your imagination and youd reach things that you hum as you're walking down the sidewalk. DROP IT DOWN!!!
Finn Gallagher Get a tube screamer! The ibanez ts808 would be a good call to get a srv like tone (he used it a lot), but basically the sound lies in your fingers ;)
Ok. This half a fret lower was common back n the 60s when I was a kid because they made the guitars with high frets n thick strings so everybody always tuned their guitars a half a fret lower so they could press the stings down and or bend them because that’s the only way you could play most guitars. Has nothing to to do with SRV tuning his guitar down a half of fret with thicker strings to sound better. Now that their making guitars better with thinner strings. Theirs no reason to tune ur guitar down a half a fret. Get it. So no need to tune it down a half a fret with big thick strings. Common sense guys. Live n learn. Ur welcome
Great tutorial, but it is extremely frustrating that you did this in standard tuning. I really appreciate you and I know this took a ton of work. I'm not hating, just expressing my frustration that may be used as constructive criticism. Thanks man!
Am in my mid 40's and a beginner ....at it a couple few yrs but just for fun....17 guitars and 5 amp or amp like deals , many dozens of lessons and tons of accessories later I'm loving it...
becraul If you are new to this style of playing and have a Stratocaster or Telecaster use 9-42 gauge strings. If playing a Gibson use 10-46. And practice, a lot.
I use 12s and I finally got the intro down after a month working on and off on it. no strings broken. I have strong hands so 9 and 10 feel like there is almost nothing to grab onto. I start on a guitar with 11-54 standard tuning with this video then move to a start with e flat and 12-54 strings. Even though I play with a thick pick as well, I rarely brake strings.
I'm making progress with this. I made it to 11 minutes of this video with the song on my strat. Despite all that, all I have to say is Fuck me, this is hard.
@GuitarLessons365Song Carl, you should consider start uploading videos on your own website then. That way, RUclips won't have control over what you post. Many people started to abandon RUclips after the same thing happened to them.
Thanks man this opened up the fret board for these SRV licks!! I'm working on a version of this using just 2 fingers and my thumb... Check it out on my page
If you're good enough to "figure it out yourself" why can't you make the genius move of figuring out the main scale used and key. That's the simple part homie.

yeah but you gotta get that stevie tone
Same man, just getting into Stevie’s playing, and I’ve put some twelves on (I normally play 10s) 😂
Jeez lol did you cut your nut for the jumpnin gauge?

I spend so much money years ago on SRV dvd lessons and they don't get even close to the quality of this lesson. Great job and thank you!
this is a great lesson, i like how

each lick and the chords.

Well nope...back to impressing my toddler by playing baby shark. To her i'm a rock star.
Don’t ever think you’re not good enough. It takes practice brother 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
well shit now I got to tune a half step back up, I just need like 6 different guitars

Same
09:45 it's always in the 8th fret, it's one of the things that caracterizes SRV
killer lesson. i got blisters on my blisters
*me :P
Always the best lessons on RUclips
My strings can't handle this right now. I'll be back.
haha. did you end up learning it?
Yes!
DAMN, I JUST BROKE MY FIRST STRING!!
Best lesson, BTW! Thanks!
rip e string
the key is F# since SRV version is played in e flat tuning on the 3rd fret. Its the G pentatonic scale but F# since the guitar is tuned down a half step.

This lesson is crazy good, transformed my phrasing. Well explained, thanks man.
Don't forget to mention that the way you play this is to imitate rising waters (with the bends) and the water's waves with the double-stop slides. I've always thought that's the way he played it.
This is a great lesson! I just can't wrap my head around why one would decide to teach in standard when the song is a half step down
I keep coming back. Great, thanks.

outstanding video man!!
I love your videos! thanks so much, they've been a big help :)
Great Lesson! Broken down nicely. Many Thanks.
Great lesson Carl :D, really helpful :). Could you do "Life Without You" as well please?
I am playing this song with 13s and it is extremely painful. But at least I am not going to brake my strings.

i have broke 2 string on this one vid hahahah
+bruce mills Ok, I'll join you, on my 2nd broken string now, too ;-)
Very good lesson thank you !!!
thanks so much for posting this
Again a good lesson. Except you really should play the tunes all the way through once in a while. It surprises me that you would not do that.

Brilliant lesson. Thanks so much.
Thank you
Why do it in standard tuning? great work tho-thx
Excellent
How do I get a beefier, fuller tone like SRV, I just have a strat and a tube amp. What pedal do I need? A quick answer would be awesome. Thanks!

ChickenBoneNowison Interesting. I'll demo one at the guitar shop tomorrow. Thanks!
Finn Gallagher ,13/58
SouthSide Lenny I don't follow. What does 13/58 mean?
Finn Gallagher string gauges....Vaughan used 13/58..heavy strings...its the only way to get that big sound
So stoked im actually getting this.... p.s i love u carl 😉
3:17 that’s not 1st of the E string.
great tutorial, please do the testify, life without you, so exited full tutorials, plese !! please!!
This video is so cool!!!!
Thank you for the lesson man! someone could tell me which chord he plays at 3:04??
+guccioFTW i believe its a d# 7th chord hope that helps
G6 chord
You guys over thinking! 😂😂 that’s just a Em triad on the 3 lower strings.
Is this down a half step? Because mine is down and doesn’t sound right
Most of SRV is half step down
thanks for the standard tunning! =]

Hey - I love your lessons! Could you please do a lesson of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers w/ Eric Clapton's song Hideaway?
aw man love the lesson. wish i could play guitar
Just do it! if I can start playing at over 50, you can do it. Buy a guitar and go to Carl's website and do his beginner lessons.
yes, do it! I started in my late 30's and did not even know what a chord was.

strat

what key is this in in standard tuning?
What DiMarzio pickups are these ?

Why is this tuned to standard
here body you can use it as an exemple if you'd like...and thanks for the cours by the way

RUclips sucks I've attempted many times to listen to one song But somehow it shuts down why is that
Bruce Boyd check you video settings
you know what,, my 1st string broke twice during this lesson
“That’s with your first finger so it’s kinda painful”
During the intro Stevie did a sweep across the strings before he went into the first part idk that's just how I heard it
@GuitarLessons365Song Carl, you should consider start uploading videos on your own website then. That way, RUclips won't have control over what you post. Many people started to abandon RUclips after the same thing happened to them.
aghhh, I'm in eb. and having an issue following
just play everything the same as he does but 1 fret up. Open strings will be on the 1st fret.
That's Freddie King's song Hideaway...
@grabersm can you learn how to tune down a half step for us, that would be very helpful
