    Wow, 70,000 miles in 18 months, that's as much as my 18 year old Jazz haha. Also how is the charge door not covered under warranty? Not as if it would be expensive for MG to fix it for you. I've never heard of warrant not covering something mechanical like that, only things like wearing materials.

      There is a lot of things not covered after 12month, 2 years or 3 years. After 3 years then only thing that’s covered is the EV battery and anti-perforation. Who knew that the leather cracking on the drivers seat at 20 months and 28k miles is not covered under warranty! Had loads of issues with my one… see another post I’ve added in the comments.

      @@talkingdriveruk But do they advertise it as an 7 year warranty or something? afaik there's nothing like that in Australia. ACCC would not take kindly to that not being made clear/advertised as a 7 year warranty or whatever, it's misleading. Is a 'decaying' warranty common in the UK, or is this new/specific to MG?

    Excellent update! I'm disappointed that the charge port door is not covered under warranty, I do not understand how it isn't covered considering the car is just 18 months old. Have you a feel for its fuelling costs versus anything else ICE? Clearly servicing and maintenance are minimal, even if you're doing the work yourselves. I think you're right with that Charge Port Door. If it were mine I'd have epoxied a couple of neodymiums on it right away.

    • @talkingdriveruk
      @talkingdriveruk Год назад +1

      Great to see that this MG5 is doing well. My real world review of my 28K 20month old MG5 wouldn’t far so well. Boot lock - replaced, Boot struts - replaced, cap on rear wipe - replaced, need another one as that’s broken off. Drivers seat cover, leather cracking (not under warranty now, £160 replacement). Front drivers wiper - corrosion (being replaced) DAB radio disconnected - Being replaced. I’ll sure that the front charger cap will go soon, I’m starting to have trouble closing that. And I’m had loads of issues getting rapid chargers going. Had 3 occasions in hot weather when the charger has failed and it’s caused a H/V fault. MG hasn’t been able to get to the bottom of that as it clears after 20 minutes. The issues are with the car. Been advised by 3 different charging companies to open the charger flap, lock the car, prepare the charger for the charge (contactless/charger card/app) then when ready, unlock car and connect. Works every time now using this method. Find that in cold weather it’s slow to charger on rapid chargers (yes I know cold weather effects charging speed, but other vehicles seem faster on chargers next to me in the same weather) I love the way it drives and like the concept of EV’s but this is the most troublesome vehicle I’ve ever owned. In addition the dealer isn’t very good near me and the warranty is lacking in places. I’ll not be getting another one sadly. Yes prices are great but can’t handle the issues and the thought that at any moment it will fail big style on me. Got my eye on an MG4, but…. With the issues I’ve had with the 5 - not so sure now….

      @@talkingdriveruk Ouch, I'd be frustrated if that wasn't all covered under warranty although I struggle to believe the leather is cracking so early under normal usage/care. Maybe time for a Ora cat or Atto 3 next haha. In Australia, SAIC (mg, ldv and others) cars have a somewhat poor reputation however GWM seem to be decent. BYD is quite new and niche (although MASSIVE sales) so time will tell. Not sure if it's available where you are but the Atto 3 is quite a good car, though so is the MG4 on paper.

    • @computerbob06

      @@talkingdriveruk Just wondering if the slow charge when cold is because your battery is cold - the others might have battery preconditioning or just warm batteries. If you haven't got the ability to warm the battery before charging you can stress it a bit to warm it up first. A few miles before the charger (if you can and safe to) do some hard acceleration and Regen braking a few times over to warm the battery up.
      Also what charge level are you starting off with - the lower the better.

    We just got two of these MG5’s to replace our 2 diesel vans, we do about 80,000 miles a year as they are used 365 24/7. Be interesting to see how they get on once they are over 100k. Our diesel vans always had problems after they went over 100k. So far I have been really impressed with these vehicles. Though never got any faster than a 60 kWh charging speed so far 😢. One is on about 32k and the other on 23k so still quite far behind you on miles but we will eventually overtake you 😅 we are only rapid charging these as we have no slow charging at our office. I want to see how that affects range over time as I hear continuous rapid charging isn’t good. We rapid charges ours about 3 times a day as we use these on days and night shifts they are always on the move.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  Год назад +1

      Interesting. What are they used as? Any links? Try the battery heater for faster charging, about 20 mins before hitting a decent charger. Rapid charging is fine, it’s protects the battery well and ramps down accordingly.

    • @andrewallen9918
      @andrewallen9918 Год назад

      If your max rate has only been 60kW then that won’t massively impact the battery (1C) as long as it usually abides by the 80/20 rule. Obviously more detrimental than overnight charging but you don’t have that option.

    Regarding your comment about the first MOT at 3 years from date of first registration. Cars these days can do substantially higher mileage than those of yesteryear, especially EVs. Those in the industry will know there has been talk from the Government on more than one occasion about making the MOT every 2 years, making a 3-2-2 interval. This is a bad idea and in my opinion, the internal should be kept annually, but going further the first MOT should be at 2 years old, i.e. 2-1-1.

    Love the Divanti's on my Golf! Initially just the rears but was impressed by them enough to put them on the fronts! Nice price as well and as far as I know, an Italian sounding name for a British company with product made in China!
    Interesting James mentions prices. Next car will be either a Golf (PHEV or BEV) or Ioniq (28/38kwh), but prices all around really dropping now - thanks Elon (but also the rubbish UK public network, as people now have charger anxiety) and are ditching their EV's somewhat! The leased EV's are starting to come through now, so Kona's are available for £17k, E-Niro's for £19k, 40kwh Leaf's for £12k etc!

    • @turbokadett
      @turbokadett Год назад

      A Mk2 Ioniq will have double the range and double the accesories of a BEV Golf. I considered a Golf but the badge premium for what is, these days, a short range EV was a big turn off.

    • @computerbob06
      @computerbob06 Год назад

      @@turbokadett Yeah it's a tricky decision to make. If the public network had 100kw chargers as its base and most of them worked all the time (with 5 or more to choose from at each location) I'd go for the 28kwh Ioniq - slightly cheaper but mostly due to its faster charge rate! I like the 38kwh but it's bigger battery at a slower charge rate and there's some talk of its coolant getting problems with glooping up, puts it into 2nd place (for now) - there's videos explaining the coolant loop and possible reasons for this! (Maybe James could cover it?)
      Unfortunately my life has lots of obstructions as to what car I can get. We're a one car family that can only charge at home with the cable running across a path and into the road - where the car may not be directly outside. Where I park at work, I have to park on the street with very tight parking sometimes, so really need a small car and preferably a hatch due to all the sports I do etc. And then there's the cost of course!
      I can't really lay the cable out at night so need (here up North) a car that will preheat/cool on battery alone. Of course I don't (need) that feature but if I'm spending that amount of money, I'd like as much usability as possible!
      I only mention the Golf BEV because I have the Golf diesel at the moment and it's all the car I need - but also that it's prices are coming down quite quickly! But then if I'm going to get a passively cooled car, why not get a 2nd gen Leaf?
      As James said the MG5 prices are coming right down but I don't think I can quite do with the size, the 4 will be about perfect but it's too much at the moment!
      I am getting quite excited as the Kona's and E-Niro's are coming down nicely and they would be the perfect car for me.
      But then, why not just get another Golf (petrol) cheap and wait for the E-Niro to hit a lower level?
      Decisions, decisions!

    Great update and your videos encouraged me to go and look at an MG5 so very soon I will be replacing my ageing C Class estate with a 2021 or 2022 model.
    One thing I think you should maybe consider is changing brake pads (for all your customers) after a maybe 9 or 10 years regardless of wear. I have seen two cars recently were the friction material fell off the pad due to corrosion leaving the driver with a very dangerous moment of zero brakes until the caliper closed the metal to metal. Of course after the moment of panic the brakes were now severely compromised until they were replaced.
    Just a thought but keep up the great work.

    Another excellent video. When you move the wheels from the front to the back, does that mess up the tyre pressure sensors? Do you have to reprogram them? I am just about to change from Winter to Summer wheels on my MG 5 EV and the garage wasn't too sure what was involved when changing the wheels/tyres.

    Neodymium magnets on the charge flap and attachment point would have been so much much neater. Also I agree bout the mileage, MOTs should be 4 years or 40K miles whichever is sooner, as this is about the time tyres, brakes wiper blades etc.. need changing on most cars.

    I think one of these would be a good upgrade to my leaf , I don't mind high millage so will look for one with nearly 100k miles , wonder what sort price would get one at

  • @rjb1970
    @rjb1970 Год назад

    If you're worried about MOT I'm sure you can get it done earlier if you want to. Just because you don't have to doesn't mean you can't. I think taxis have to get tested after a year now because of the mileage.

    I took a punt on the first batch of MG ZS EVs, still have it and it has just had its first MOT. Now I don't do the mileage that you do so I am pleased that you report on the longevity. A taxi driver with a ZS EV said at close on 70k miles the rear door seal was worn from passengers getting in and out! If that is that sort of issues that we face we have backed a winner. I too was looking at at an MG5 to replace a 10 year old Passat Estate, as you say they aren't expensive. The bet is will the short range battery last better than the long range. The chemistry of the short range is the same as in domestic battery systems and is supposed to be good for 10,000 cycles! In my 2019/20 ZS even with the 40 kW battery a 300 mile journey isn't a chore though the speed of charge is rarely exciting.

    The warranty is a joke! I've never had a manufacturer try and charge for diagnostics or if no fault is found until the MG 5, mine is the first and last for me! We had plans to replace my partners focus with an MG 4 next year, that's not happening now. Soon as this can go back to finance it's gone!
    It's a shame though because it's a good car otherwise, just let down with a warranty that's not worth the paper it's written on so to speak.

    Hi james. Have you calculated charging vs fuel costs after 70k. Would be interesting to know how much you’ve saved on fuel even though you do a lot of public charging

      The savings aren't just on fuel. There are considerable savings on servicing too...... And Octopus Intelligent has just dropped in price, from 10p per kwh to 7.5p per kwh...........

    If the biggest problem you've had with the MG is a broken charge flap lock, I'm jealous I must say.
    My Hyundai Ioniq 5 has spent the last two months with the dealer after an ICCU failure stopped the 12v battery from being charged -- it took them 6 weeks just to diagnose this and I have now sold it back to them because it's riddiculous that a car be off the road for that amount of time given it was only 10 months old with 3000 miles on the clock when it died.
