    My family once had to sell at a car boot sale coz we had lost our house and had no money to raise a deposit for a rental property. I was 17 and seeing people fighting over a £1 reduction for my childhood keepsakes was utterly heartbreaking. I believe I sold a nearly complete Jurassic park play set (big dinos, visitor centre, fences, vehicles etc) for £30. I shudder to think what it would be worth now.

      Years ago I was at a vintage toy fair, my mate Jack in his 80’s but card sharp was selling some of his collection. A guy walks up, picks up a clockwork mouse & gives it a looking over while he’s talking on the phone, it had a little price sticker on the bottom £55 - he looked at Jack & mouthed ‘can you do anything on the price, Jack nodded, took it, dropped it into a brown bag, mouthed ‘£60 ok’ as he passed it back without a flinch with his palm outstretched. Guy still yapping held phone on shoulder with head while he got his cash out, dealwas done in a blink & he walked off still gassing. Looking at Jack “I don’t believe what I just saw!” his reply “He asked me if I could do anything with the price & I could, I put it up” . . . Valuable lesson learned.

      @@TheMatthooks The audio quality is slightly lower than what you get on a CD, but most people can't hear the difference. You can record to a more 'portable' digital format (MP3, FLAC, etc.) in higher quality than you'd get on Minidisc. But some people like to collect historical electronics and audio gear, so I think that's where most of the resale value comes from. That, and the fact that they were not hugely popular, so they're getting increasingly rare.

  • @randomnesspersonified

    The only time I ever did a car boot SALE was with my friend, probably about 30 years ago now, I think I was about 18/19. We arrived late compared with other sellers but they still let us drive onto the field (possibly a miracle, given health and safety really - or maybe they just wanted the fee from us lol). We thought it would be a bit of fun on a Sunday, and nobody would probably want our no longer needed bits and bobs - clothes, pendants, cheap bracelets, a few books etc. How wrong I was. To me, it was an INSANE experience. I actually felt a bit scared at first. We hadn't got out of the car yet and already there were people literally swarming around the car trying to peer in through the windows and rear windscreen to see what we had. We were totally surrounded by eager buyers with a bit of a wild look in their eyes (so it seemed to me anyway lol). It's a bit like how I imagine a famous person might feel if their car was being "mobbed" by fans outside a concert or something. I found it a truly unsettling experience - I had no idea people were so savage about wanting to get a "bargain" before anyone else! Of course, I loved going to boot sales to browse around, but usually mid or even late morning when all the sellers had basically set up already, so I'd no idea about the die hard car boot buyers' ways. Turning up late as a seller was an experience I won't ever forget. It ended in fun too. Nobody wanted the patterned leggings my friend had, so that afternoon I ended up dancing round in a pub car park with said leggings on my head. The kid sitting in the back of his parents' car was highly entertained - objective achieved! No adoring fans flocking round me or my car at that point in the day though lol

    • @FlippingSloth
      @FlippingSloth  Месяц назад +1

      And that was before online reselling haha .. people actually wanted the stuff for themselves back then. How things change

    • @randomnesspersonified
      @randomnesspersonified Месяц назад

      @@FlippingSloth Yes lol, it was amazing how keen folks were - I suppose it could be because you couldn't buy ebay bargains then, so really, I guess you had to physically go in search of stuff fairly locally if you wanted something. My sister and her partner used to find all their kids' clothes, shoes and toys at the boot sale, charity shops, or in the free ad type local newspapers which used to land on the doormat every week. I actually sold my old Volvo banger for £50 years ago via a "free ad" type newspaper. Well really it was free I suppose because it still had 50 quid's worth of tax left on it when I "sold" it, but we had weeks of no interest in it whatsoever, nowhere to park it long term and I already had my next car - the timing was crap. How I miss the days when you could sell-on the tax disc's remaining months to the buyer of your car, and in turn you could buy a car with tax already on it, no faffing about with DVLA. Oh hell I'm writing a book, I've gotta shut up now! I agree with you, it's interesting thinking about how things have changed.

I'm Australian and sell at our Sunday morning market so it's really interesting to see your boot sales. I don't buy to sell though, I source free stuff from street verge collection and skip bins etc. It's amazing what people throw out.
