hey luke, since you are in penang, go to Bao Sheng durian plantation. it will be a wonderful experience that you will never forget. This plantation has rooms to rent as well. The char kway teow is fried with pork lard. it must be pork lard oil that gave the aroma and flavor. Vegetable oil won't do the job.

it's 28th December 2018. Almost one year after the video was shot. But I must admire u, Luke for your love of food, esp Malaysian food and for showing us, things that we know least about. Well, Malaysians still need to learn from foreigners like you!. I'm a Muslim and some food is not for me, but it's good to know. Best of luck and happy new year 2019.

mike mike Laksa with santan (coconut milk) is actually called Nyonya Laksa or Curry Laksa as 'Asam' Laksa is referring to the Tamarind sour taste in the brown broth & its exclusive to Penang only whereas the Laksa with santan is found throughout the other parts of Malaysia.

Just for information: Hereabouts, condensed ''milk'' is just in name only as there is hardly any milk in them anymore, IF ANY. The ingredients are overwhelmingly sugar and palm oil, perhaps some flavouring to give it a ''milky'' taste.

Good video as always. But i think you should first ask the restaurant owner for permission to pop out some durian in their shop. I'm very sure they allow it, but just to show some courtesy because you know how strong the smell can be. Unless there is durian stall in front of their shop it should be no problem.
    Cheers and happy new year!

In my early traveling days years ago, my only experience with laksa was curry laksa so first time I was in KL I was in a food court and ordered just laksa which turned out to be Assam laksa. I realised it was different but I thought it'd be a good opportunity to try another type. That particular one was so overly fishy (I think it had some blood in it too) it turned me off for Assam laksa for good.
