"...we need to feel that we are seen by others as our authentic selves."
Except that online and some places offline, many people carefully craft personae that are solely intended to garner the most reward of some kind or other (attention, fame, money) with authenticity put on a shelf.

We didn't embrace it. We were tricked into it. I avoid it when I can.

Is "identity" reliable? Should it be used to define a human being? Is your " identity" created for you by external agencies simply to monetise? Is it really authentic? Is it the "real you"? Is it individuality in a narcissistic way? This is a sticky subject . Upbringing, experiences all shape the "persona" and we have to ask ourselves how much of it is actually the real you. How much is worn as a mask out of fear and survival.
