Maynard’s pink onesie was LEGENDARY.
he is one of the few to ever get away with that!
He can whatever he wants
I rarely see a band live more than once.
My 15th and 16th times seeing Tool, I flew 3000 miles to see them on consecutive nights.
I wish I had that kind of money to spend on concerts
Damn. I've only seen them twice. Once in '96, and once in '22.
Oh! 9 did see APC open for NIN in '00.
Ditto that. I've seen T00L about 25 times, my favorite was the small pre 10,000 days tour they did a show up in Oakland or San Francisco in a small theatre-I spent as much as was needed & my ears were ringing the show for a week. Fkng amazing!!!
"Such an impact on one's soul"... 32 years later, souls are still being effected by this performance
affected. it's ok to slap me
@@tylerhuffman5645 is disliking a comment a good equivalent to a slap?
They have done so much great stuff later, but this song still hits me like nothing else.
TOOL Army, checking in. 😁😎
Howdy fam 🖐🏻😎
Salute
Aho !
Here here!
Here.
Danny "The Octopus" Carey lowering himself in this song by playing a simple "in the pocket 4/4 with fills" 😆
That snare hit is so in the pocket it gives me chills.
5:17 the soundscape he's lays down is SO GOOD
I was 33 yrs. old when I discovered Tool. Over twenty years later, I still get goose bumps.......Enjoy!
Tool is a band that you REALLY need to have the lyrics available to you. Either to read before hand or to go over after you hear the song. Maynard is a master lyricist: Lyrics in Tool sings are complex and deep. And important. Make sure you know what he’s saying. It adds to the greatness of their music.
This was filmed at the Reading Festival in England, August 27, 1993.
If you see a crowd that is 2-3 times the size of an arena crowd, there's a good chance it's a festival with multiple bands. Especially if it's outdoors.
The convergence of one of my favorite reactors and my absolute favorite band ever has me giddy. Seeing how just these first two songs have touched you I can’t wait for more. Again, welcome to the spiral. I’m so happy you are here. 🤘🏻🌀🤘🏻 TOOL Army since ‘92.
Down the TOOL rabbit hole we go!🤘
I'm a simple man, I see TOOL, I press the like button.
Same here brother from another Mother and Father
Same here!!!😊
Simple as well.
this guy gets it :D
I am 17 years sober. Obviously, this song has deep meaning for me. Maynard is doing the junky itch and trembling embodying the struggle of an addict and although he himself is not an addict, he nails it.
Supposedly, the song is about Layne Staley, the lead singer of Alice in Chains and Mad Season who struggled so badly with addiction and died from it. Amazing!
Tool is my favorite rock band and top 3 music artists of all time for me.
Mad Season not Bad Season lol
@@Rob74959 Spell check shit. Fixed! Thanks.
@@Rob74959 Spell autocorrect shit. Fix it. Thanks! 👌
I agree man.. tool is 3rd on my list... AIC is 4th... and this song has power... if you really listen and see and feel it.. it can help you heal. All will be OK if you have the ability to face yourself and change..
I’m glad you chose this version. It’s a perfect encapsulation of who they are and the emotion they play with!
Here for the Tool algorithm… I love seeing you discover this band finally
Another great reaction,Stacey🤘! I’m glad that Tool is touching you as they have touched do many others! They are truly a TOOL for healing and awakening, as you (and Tool in “Lateralus”) said, to see the beauty🌀. There is no better feeling than seeing someone experience for the first time what you did just now. There are SO many more experiences to be had, and I know the rest of the Tool Army is going to be right here with me watching your Journey! Two tips for your Journey:
1. Stick to Audio/Lyrics Only if possible (this “Sober” vid, “Pneuma” live drum cam, and their live cover of “No Quarter” are the exceptions I would say). The music videos are great, but they detract from absorbing the music on the first listen.
2. ENJOY THE RIDE😁🤘🌀
As far as recommendations for more songs, as you will see, they don’t have a bad one really but I would suggest the following if I had to pick a handful: .H, Jimmy, Jambi, Third Eye, Vicarious, Prison Sex (hard listen for some, but worth it), Descending, Pneuma (Drum Cam and Studio Version both!), Stinkfist, Lateralus, Pushit, Intolerance, Ænima, Right in Two, Hooker with a Penis (wild yes, but Tool loves to push boundaries and buttons), Intolerance, and I can keep going and going, but you will get to them all eventually! Oh also, the members are the following:
Opiate EP and Undertow:
Maynard James Keenan-Vocals
Adam Jones-Guitar
Danny Carey-Drums
Paul D’amour- Bass
Then for the rest of the albums it is the same except Justin Chancellor takes over on Bass after their first full album (Undertow). Anyway, thanks for taking us on the Journey with you and I look forward to more of your reactions! Have a great day, and Spiral Out🤘🌀🙌🏼!
Probably the singular most captivating stage performance I’ve ever seen.
I have seen them two days ago in vienna.
Ironically it was in the top 3 of the most beautiful experiences i ever whitnessed sober...
I have taken my fair share of substances and i still do in a very controlled manner but i have been sober from alcohol for 6 years now and i won't ever drink again.
This band is really something else.
The only other band i can compare them to is Heilung.
Tool always has a very strict "No Phone" rule on their live shows which i really appreciate.
It makes you pay attention alot more and you feel the music.
Some people actually got kicked out for filming.
I respect that a lot.
Yeah, the no phone thing needs to be at most shows. I will never understand why people spend so much money to go to a show and then watch it through their phone the whole time!
And I'm with you on the substance use - I've used my fair share, but alcohol and tobacco are forever removed from my life. It amazes me that the two most addictive, dangerous, and destructive drugs are the ones that I can walk into a store and buy - and more than that - they are pushed on us around every corner! Crazy!
I’ve been in the Toolbox since 93!🤟🏼
Yup! I remember when the music video was released on MTV - I knew I was witnessing something special. Nobody sounded like them and nobody embodied those emotions quite like Tool.
I am glad you took this opportunity! When I started viewing his songs, I learned to print the lyrics prior to listening...I was blown away. Research what this song is about and you will understand why he was wearing, and the characterization/persona he became for this song. TOOL is extremely powerful. I use many of their songs for my acting and my acting students.
I know I mentioned "Lateralus" on the last tool video. BUT, if you want to be moved... The 2 songs together: Wings for Marie (Pt 1) and 10.000 Days (Wings Pt 2) are about the lead singers mom passing, and her being devoutly religious despite being paralyzed from a stroke for nearly 10,000 days.
The other band Keenan sings for, A Perfect Circle, also has a song called Judith, which is about his mom and his aversion to her faith.
One of the best bands in out time. I've only seen them 5 times . but every time I do I appreciate them more. Progressive rock in our time. Maynard is a lyrical genius.
Welcome to Tool Army. There are so many fantastic songs in your journey ahead.
Stacey my 1st ever seeing your show on 7/03/2024. I Became a Tool addict in 2019. You nailed it. On all levels Captivating, Awe, Mindblowing, Talent on a level of perfection that the music industry doesn’t hear. Only one group can play at a level of excellence with them(Metallica). Maynard James Vocals drives a spiritual and emotional dagger 🗡️
That hits all the senses- Extremely Refreshing to know that you and countless others have discovered the Potent Sound of Tool..
This is early Tool, with their original bassist. I love the intensity of the chords he is playing on that Rickenbaker bass. I saw this version of Tool on the small stage at Lollapaloosa. The friend I went with talked me into checking them out on the small stage which might have had a few hundred people at. He said, "Trust me, You want to see these guys". As a bassist, it was a tough sell because at the same time Funkadelic/Parlament was on the main stage. I am glad I took his advice, they completely blew me away. I think what we are seeing hear is early Tool performing at a major festival once they were moved to the main stage.
Unfortunately I was watching the main stage and missed Tool side stage during the Mountain View, CA Lollapaloosa. Heard about it by many how great they were, then Sober broke a few months later.
Your tool reactions are my new favourite content can’t wait for the next. 🎉
Your next one should be 46 & 2. Also check out Vicarious, Schism, Aenima, Hooker with a Penis, Pneuma(you have to do the Danny Carey cam version of this one it will blow out your brain hole. Its live but is so sooooo sooooo good). A lot of people are going to say Lateralus, but you should really get deep into Tool before you react to that one. That one is well regarded as their Masterpiece. Quite honestly, you can't go wrong with anything in their discography. Oh, and as I am sure others have already told you, have the lyrics handy. They are always as amazing as the song itself, most of the songs actually have a very deep meaning. They are perfectionists, so they dont put out new music often, I think it took 13 years between albums last time. They have been around for over 30 years and only have 6 albums i believe. Whichever one you do don't forget to Spiral out, Keep going.
Pushit from the Salival box set is still one of my favorite live recordings ever, I highly recommend it, Third Eye and No Quarter are also amazing
I love that version and the speech at the start about looking at something in a different way.
I saw TOOL 3 times back in this era, including once in a small club.
Maynard energy blinked once the entire time he was onstage
I went to Okinawa In the late 90s loving Hip hop and R & B and started really enjoying rock in my 20s and so many amazing vocals but when i first heard Tool and Maynards vocals it felt like his vocals sounded like a soul or a subconscious spirit singing....not a typical traditional sounding singer....
Great song, great reaction!! You're spot on about Maynard's voice and stage presence. It echoes my first reaction to the band. I was fortunate to see Tool around this time (Lollapalooza 1993, along with Rage, Alice in Chains, Primus, and many others). From the back of the fairgrounds, my friends and I could clearly sense Tool's fierce and savage performance the second they hit the stage. Been a fan ever since.
I was really lucky to get to experience a lot of music in the early 90s, I had a friend whose dad owned a club and used to let us sit in the managers office to watch bands even though I was like 10. I loved all the music, but seeing Tool even when they were still pretty rough around the edges was where I suddenly had a favorite band and that hasn't changed in 30 years.
Something I love in this performance is how he seems to go through different stages of addiction. It starts almost apologetic, then pleading then confrontational and ends indifferent. Everything about the performance is powerful.
Maynard stared at one person through this entire song. Sadly, that person turned to stone and remains there to this day
It's one thing to be capable of that level of vocals in a studio with proper form, but being able to do it while in twisted postures and stumbling is even more amazing.
I haven’t even gotten to the actual song yet. I’m just here for the AMAZING performance of TOOL and MJK (Maynard) !!!!!!
I remember when I first heard this song and watched the music video when I was 16 in the mid 2000s and it really changed my mind about how I thought about music.
I’ve listened to several great bands and tool is the only band without a single bad song in my opinion. So many masterpieces from one band. I’m subscribing for the tool journey!
Tool army reporting for duty!
Their entire discography is worth listening to. Can't wait to follow your Tool experience!
Tool is such a unique band. I would suggest that the best way to learn more about them would be to listen to their discography from the oldest to newest. Starting with Opiate and working through Fear Inoculum, you get to see the progression of the band. Anyways, I love the reactions and can't wait to see more!!!
Excited for your new journey. Welcome to the party. 10,000 days will rip your heart out.
Saw them a month or so before this gig, just as they were starting to make noise outside the US with the single for this song and another "Prison Sex" - they were supporting Rage Against The Machine and it was one of the most intense gigs i've ever witnessed! Got to see Tool a couple times over the years and they're always fantastic!
Sober and the The Pot are good warm up songs to Tool. Probably one of the their most simplest song yet very powerful. Have fun with the rest.! You can’t go wrong any Tool song
at last, another reaction fom an S tier band. Early Tool sounded so p!ssed off lol, you'll notice their evolution in later songs as they become more spiritual, deeper, while still being smart and talented as hell. This one is a rarity as they seldom record live songs, Maynard is weirdly averse to the spotlight, for a huge rock band frontman.
not just averse. He has stage fright. so the staring at one point is a coping mechanism. Later in life it gets easier but yes averse. Just let him be in his wineyard.
i had always heard this song but didn't really think much of it. but when i found out he was saying "why CAN'T we not be sober." i was like oh shit that's a whole other meaning. so i listened to the rest more closely. Wow what an incredible song and performance.
The intensity of this performance always makes me tear up
It's been amazing watching you reacting to my favourite bands. Keep it up
Welcome to the family. All the songs are just as good and there is so much to unpack. Pull up lyrics on phone because it unlocks a whole new world and look forward to seeing more great reactions!
Couldn't agree more! Enjoy the journey that is TooL! A majority of their songs I suggest first listens being only the studio recordings, not music videos or live from here on out. This is because of your attention to the dynamics - the songs will make more sense to you. Just my opinion, but I'm guessing I'll have quite a few backers on that ;) next up, check out Parabol/Parabola (together and don't pause) or Pushit!! Have fun!
What a perfect fit he acted completely hammered when he performed the song solder
Maynard is acting the way he is and focusing on one point not only to show the physical, mental, and emotional embodiment of the struggle with addiction, it's also because he is actually very shy, and that was a tool (pun intended) to make it easier for him to perform in front of the crowd. In early concerts, he used to sing from the shadows in the background of the stage, so he couldn't be seen. (So I've read in a couple of places.) I hope to see them live one day.
Yes, his voice is mesmerizing, I agree. Love your reactions!
Wonderful reaction! It's really awesome to experience someone going on this journey. Ty for bringing us along. You have so many treats ahead of you. I would suggest Lateralus, Pushit, & Pneuma next. Spiral out!
Back in these days Maynard would single out someone in the crowd and literally stare at them the entire show. I had the privilege of being that guy around this time period in San Francisco in a night club when they were just hitting it big. Had me freaked the F out! 😂
Tool’s music take you on a journey thru your mind. Their discography cannot be matched.
That was a captivating performance, his vocal intensity just demanded your attention. I really am hooked on your reactions and they're something I look forward to each and every one of them. I would like to see you go down the rabbit hole of "Dire Straits". I am mostly a Pink Floyd follower, but Dire Straits is a close second for me. You are my favorite reactor on youtube!
Thank you for your sweet words ❤️
One of the, if not the greatest live performance's ever, he is transcendent while preforming this song. Having lived this song in my younger days, it's always brought me to tears and I bawled my eyes out the first time I saw this.
Not only is Maynard is a legendary rock star who had a mohawk hair style but an accomplished business man who owns a huge vineyard in Arizona and wine business. He also occasion wares a suit and tie for business and was a Sargent in the Army!
Side note: Maynard is a USArmy veteran, and in Basic and AIT and all that he exhibited such exemplary leadership skills he was offered, OFFERED, a spot at the most prestigious Military School on this planet, that being West Point...he declined the invite, finished out his hitch, got his DD 214, and then began his journey to progressive rock god...🤘🏻🇺🇸
Us and our Toolish hobbies 👊🏽⚡️
This is just the beginning !!! … u get the point …. Tool is something else …. All have an intention ../ write from souls to souls ….. the most powerful thing we have is to create emotions …. And they know exactly how to !!!
Maynard's stage presence is insane it's so fitting for the song, he's so intense!!! You should definitely watch their performance of Led Zeppelin's No quarter live!!! It's unbelievable, just amazing & Maynard's performance is brilliant!!!
Yay! More Tool!!!!
They should rename this song "Goosebumps"! I always get goosebumps watching it....
It's an amazing performance. These guys are all masters of their craft and so incredibly creative. Check out the Pneuma drum cam, and don't miss Right in Two, 46 and 2, and definitely Lateralus. Oh and the Grudge. And Descending. Lol.
Lol just say listen to every Tool song :)
@@Rob74959 right.
😆
Honestly though - "Judge me" and "Just me" are pretty good substitutes for "Trust me" in that section! 😂
Check out his other band, A Perfect Circle, song Judith.
Pucifer: am i a joke to you
3 songs from tool that will literally change your life:
46&2
Vicarious
Parabol/parabola
Tool is the tightest band I ever heard. They sound the same live or recorded. Listen to them durning sound check for an hour. (Amazing Band)
The rhythm section (bass/drums) on the recording of this song is stellar. This mix doesn't quite capture it, but his vocals are special here.
TOOL is a "modern day" Pink Floyd - which you seem to rightfully adore. As others have suggested, you need to watch "Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT)". Most everyone is left speechless watching it. Danny is the best drummer, at least of a popular band, alive today - PERIOD.
Edit: ...and he's 63. His nickname is the octopus because he can somehow control each of his limbs in different ways simultaneously.
You'll likely especially enjoy "Ænema," which is about California (where I live ;) ), "Vicarious," "Jambi," "Descending" and many more.
There's a good live version of Descending out on RUclips: "TOOL descending live HIGH QUALITY"
Edit 2ish: Adam Jones on guitar was responsible for some of the effects in the classic movie Alien, among other things. These guys are all very very talented perfectionists.
There have been millions of bands over the years,Tool and some others fall into the unique category, bands once heard rarely forgotten 🎼🎵🎵🎶🎶❤️
Yet another, 'beautiful' reaction. Thanks Stacey.
Tool... All of it is amazing. All of it.
Tool
Is there own genre of music
They are just a sick ass band
This performance was in Australia 🦘 and I love how Maynard is so in the moment in this performance.
Tool are so deep you won't be disappointed by any of their music
Welcome to tool… we’re all nuts and we know WAY more than we should about tool, their music and the members. It’s an addiction.
Tool shows are amazing
Another amazing reaction! I think Vicarious would be a great next step down the rabbit hole. I'm sure you've probably been told 1k times already it's best to react to audio or lyric videos of the songs as some of the music videos can be a distraction from the music.
Also a few songs are better listening to together. Parabol/Parabola, Disposition/Reflection/Triad (Holy Trinity), Intension/Right in Two, and Lipan Conjuring/Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. Another group would be songs about Maynard and his mother. "Jimmy" (Maynard was born James) takes place at age 11 when his mother Judith Marie suffered a Brain Aneurism which left her paralyzed, and confined to a wheelchair. "Judith" - A Perfect Circle (One of Maynard's other bands), "Wings For Marie (Pt 1), and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2) follow in I'd suggest this order. Just wanted to give you a base without spoiling anything for you.
A great progression you’ve set out here.
His body language is very unsettling and I love it. He's portraying a loathsome creature beyond any redemption, trying to convince you of just that. The lyrics hammer the point home.
The staring in one spot is a technique used for stage fright. Instead of singing to the audience and having to make eye contact with people, pick a spot at the back of the crowd and sing to it.
GOAT performance by Maynard, what a freaking legend
Maynard is in three distinctly different bands: Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. All are excellent and will provide you with tons of reaction material if you so choose.
Tool made a song named 46 & 2, then these kids at o`Keefe foundation did an awesome cover of it.
Would be cool if you did a double reaction. 🤘🤟❤
Full personification of the lyrics! Maynard is a modern day renaissance man, he has 3 amazing bands (Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer), he's a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, a winemaker and just all round genius!
TOOL AND A PERFECT CIRCLE HELPED ME GET THRU MY DRUG REHAB BACK WHEN I WAS 36 IM 60 NOW!!!

Awesome reaction Stacey, Can you react to Vicarious by Tool next?
exactly broooooo
MJK is a genius! Ive seen them 6 times between Ozzfest and Lollapalooza. Every time I am left speechless. And on a side note try his wine. You won't regret that either.
Maynard has such a unique voice. Tool is one of the few 90’s bands I actually enjoy. If you haven’t yet, you should check out a band called The Warning. It’s three sisters out of Monterey, Mexico and they kick some serious ass.
Toool it's coooool🤯
"Who"
He's looking at is a representative of his narrative, seen in his disgust of one aggressive rant, at the desire to want more than your current ego
You should check out kurt cobain and nirvana the live mtv unplugged performances just like a year before his death and it’s one of the best live performances ever and then of course the classics smells like teen spirit,in bloom, heart shaped box,you know you’re right, and so many more hits.they created grunge
Tool is awesome but Perfect Circle and Puscifer are also
I think the original video creates the full mindset
Maynard's current band, Puscifer, is just as incredible as Tool and A Perfect Circle. My vote is for you to react to The Remedy next.
This…100% this!
Was this my recommendation? 😉 Great reaction 👍🏻
One more thing..."Invincible" is amazing. Especially if you have a father figure you love. It will get you.
