I am not a professional mechanic..... but I have done a lot of wrenching. I did a clutch job 1986 Toyota " One ton " a few years ago and kept track of the time. Dis - assembly was just under 2 hours. Clean up was about 45 min.... I had it back together in just under an hour.... So...call it a shy 4 hours..... Pretty easy job really.... Put new nylon bushings on the shifter and drained and replaced the 75-90w oil in the trans with correct crush washers at the same time....
Video is okay, but not a fan of the cussing especially when I was trying to use it with a minor. Yeah I know don't watch but if you are wanting video criticism...then you will appreciate my comnent.
Must be nice. It's my first job on my own truck and holy. When me and my buddies first took my auto out there was so much gunk I couldn't find the bolts to the support. After we got it out after 3 hours of painstakingly kicking it and tears. I cleaned up the support and finally found the supports so it the new manual should go in easier now. I bought the wrong throwout bearing though so I have to wait a few more weeks.
The bread technique is a lot faster and easier than grabbing a slide hammer out of the toolbox. I now keep hotdog buns on hand just for doing this job.. Threw away my slide hammer.
I've done grease before, never tried the soap! Only reason I prefer bread is because it's less of a mess once you're done since it all just comes out as one big clump
tHanks @@RotaryDaddy , you make a good point. I use bread to put into copper house pipe when the condensation in the line keeps you from sweating a joint. The bread comes out like a mess when the water comes back on. Yeah only issue is that can differ WILDLY between shops depending on labor rates, parts used, and the condition of the vehicle so it's kind of a hard thing to predict!
I need to install a clutch kit on a 91 Toyota Tercel... is this a video that can help me get it done? I can't find a 91 Toyota tercel video about installing a clutch anywhere.
I'd say just look for any fluid leaks, drive it check for noises and that the clutch/transmission isn't slipping. They're pretty hard to kill and easy to work on tbh. I'd stay away from the 3.0L if at all possible but that's about it!
Yup! If it's a 4 cylinder it should be about the same, if its a v6 there are some exterior things that are different but once you get to the clutch it should all be the same! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
@@RotaryDaddy Right on! My truck has a 5 speed behind the 22RE. Every video I've been looking up are all done on 1988s and some of those seems to have 4 speed transmissions.

i just got myself a worktruck like this with a 22re blown headgasket, easy fix. going to make it look nice and try and drift it. any advice before getting into it?
Nah they're pretty straight forward, just pay attention to your chain to make sure it doesn't skip while you're doing it if you don't plan on removing the front cover

@@RotaryDaddy Take the entire driveshaft including the yoke on each end to a driveline shop. They will shorten it and spin-balance the entire assembly. FWIW, the transmission's tail-shaft isn't designed for a thrust load and neither are the u-joints. Thanks for the video as we're doing the same job an hour from now, and I know we going to have a tough time due to that non-removable cross member holding the torsion bars.
@@rmsmith1126 yeah definitely gonna have to look into that! It really isn't too bad dealing with the crossmember. I've talked to some old timers since this video and they say you should be able to flip the trans 180 degrees and get it out that way without pulling the shifter housing but I haven't gotten another one to try
@RotaryDaddy On my 1980 I had to pull the entire casing apart first because I couldn't find the bolts for the cross member support. Now that it's cleaning up I hope it will be much easier putting the new one in lol.
If you're going to show how to pull a transmission on a vehicle why would you make a video and then speed up the whole process so no one can see what you're doing?? Thanks for a total waste of time....

What kind of grease do you use on the clutch splines?
It often comes in a little packet in the clutch kit, but grey moly grease is fine.
