    Will people please stop commenting on what these guys are doing "wrong" I have trained goju for twenty years, and in all the clubs i have visited everybody does Karate slightly different. As for the comments "it took me 2/3 months to master this Kata" if you ever think you have mastered Sanchin you are just kidding your self.

    4:22 is to check if his stance is correct. Trust me, you want your stance to be correct!

    sanchin ( or sanzhan in mandarin chinese) roughly translates into "three battles". it introduces isometric dynamic tension and and rudimentery introduction to ki development. The original chinese version that uechi-ryu still uses does not use closed fist but the open hand since it is believed that it restricts the flow of ki. sanchin dai ni is the older of the two goju-ryu sanchin kata. sanchin dai ni used to be more chinese-like at one time untill master Juhatsu Kyoda revised it.

    what it is, is, in the kata Sanchin, the proper stance, means your legs are to be slightly bent, so that a kick cannot get the groin, this kata is to be done very tense, thats why we check the shoulders, lats, thighs, and other muscles, the groin kick is to make sure the legs are in the right spot, if theyre not, well, the student fails the kata. hope that clears it up :)

    Man, I remember the first time watching someone perform Sanchin and getting their ass BEAT while they do this slow Kata, and I remember being scared crapless at the prospect of having to endure that. Of course, it's that initial fear that makes it such an accomplishment to do it so many years later. Great technique, even better instruction here.

    True, I have seen Sensei Eihachi Ota doing kata on you tube, he is very good and your way is different ours but we don't all start throwing handbags at each other.
    I like the guitar refefence.

    @dirosaga i have been doing Gojo Ryu for 6 years, if your in relatively good physical shape it is not painful. like any form of martial arts it is physically demanding. and when you watch this video and see the young man getting hit it does not cause him pain BECAUSE he has his muscles properly trained and tightened.

    There are two versions of Sanchin usually practised in Goju. This one is the version devised by Miyagi Chojun; the other one, that you're referring to, is that of Higa[shi]onna Kanryo. There are a couple of stories about why Miyagi Osensei shortened it. Personally I prefer the loger version, but there's no reason why you shouldn't practise both if you want to..

  • @tomimn2233

    i can summarize all this into the following:
    low shoulders, use armpits/ lats instead.
    tense up everything, even the glutes.
    abdominal breathing, inhale with nose, compress.
    abs tight. not sucked in, not inflated, but short and straight.
    now i'm gonna try this on push ups.

    @serbsmight Hey I'm Serb too :D. I never meant headaches, I meant light headed. For example, if you go on a roller coaster or something that is very scary or fast or something, and you step off you feel light headed. Sanchin isn't supposed to be done consecutively because it can give you a headache, since you're constantly forcing upon yourself to flex, keep rooted and let all air escape. If you watch black belt gradings, they'll rarely ask you to do sanchin twice (only if you did it very badly)

  • @Rhobyn
    @Rhobyn 13 лет назад

    @294682 There are international organizations with standardized gradings and teacher permits. The IOGKF is one of the biggest and is lead by Morio Higaonna, 10Dan in Goju Ryu and a very respectable and good martial artist.
    I guess you just had bad luck with you school. Anyways, good for you, that you found something that suited yourself better. Good luck training.

    Hi I agree w/spider above. Thought I’d share this Sanchi with shime version (look up on RUclips) Sensei Morio Higaonna (10-th Dan,IOGKF Chairman & Chief Instructor),Sensei Kazuo Terauchi (8-th Dan ,vice-chairman of the I.O.G.K.F.). Two of the most humble, spirited and knowledgeable men I’ve ever hand the pleasure to train with.

    Jesus, I remember when our original Goju teacher Sensei Shot came back to our dojo to tell our current Sensei to be a “little tougher” on us. That was the day when all of us really truly learned how to have correct form, followed by some delicious barefoot jogs in the snow and handstand knuckle pushups. As tough as that was, I kinda miss getting my ass beat every day 😂

  • @Omegascithe
    @Omegascithe 13 лет назад

    @spideyzx6r THANK YOU!!! It takes at least 3 years to fully master a kata and that is even technically off, since mastering a kata varies with what is categorized and what you think means "mastering." I've been in Goju-Ryu currently 20 years (and counting) and after going to my fair share of tournaments, everybody does it slightly different. Unless people understand "kimae" and "bankai," they will never be close to even perfecting the kata.

    Foot angle depends on the branch of Goju. Outside edges parallel is too straight in some branches of goju. Meibukan (Yaqgi), Shobukan (Shinjo), Shoreikan (Toguchi), Shodokan (Higa) are 3 I can think of off the top of my head

    I agree. this kata is a difficult one to learn and even when you learn it and think you have mastered it...it still has more to teach. Sanchin-dachi is one of the most difficult of stances to get right and master. The entire kata when done properly is one of the most physically taxing of katas. my own expression of this kata is closer to the original chinese version, sanzhan, in which the open hand and not the closed fist is employed and using only moderate dynamic tension to cultivate Ki.

  • @Rathiusr
    @Rathiusr 14 лет назад

    @soul76can If you're in the central California area you may want to look into Sensei Tibon. He was my teacher and he went from teaching out of his garage to becoming one of the more influential instructors in NA. But Goju may not be available where you are. In my opinion, that's fine, any martial art, when taught well, is a truly enriching experience. Avoid the schools that teach all the flashy moves, look for the schools where the fire, and passion, and discipline is embedded in each student.

    i speak from a place of very limited knowledge concerning this kata, but even so i believe it to be a source of great and profound understanding of biomechanics and structure, not to mention some hardcore energy flow. in fact, be careful, you may find yourself getting a bit crazy! but combined with training on a real, traditional makiwara, whatever your style may be, it is invaluable when it comes to generating power. and i don't even practice karate, thats how great this form is in my opinion.

    Yes I agree with you on most parts but there are a few things to consider, Higaonna and Teruo Chinen have slight differences in what they do, they learned Goju-ryu karate from Chojun Miyagi and can you say they do it the same way he did. They are small Japanese guys, we are tall european guys we move different even just walking. In an ideal world we would all train the same way as Higaonna, but this is not an ideal world and I guess that is why we started Karate in the first place.

  • @Omegascithe

    @printer3210 Breathing doesn't matter how it's placed, as long as it comes from the root of your body. You should be able to feel yourself being rooted to the ground and all air should escape your body. If done extremely well, should feel light headed when done the kata. If you don't feel light headed, then you are doing something wrong, as this kata is only meant to be practiced once every now and then, not consecutively due to headaches. There are different types of breathing

    Much of what Master Lee Jun-fan professed came from the ancient texts of various philosophies, mostly asian-in particular chinese. The water principe was given to Master Lee Jun-fan by his Master, Master Ip Man. A Master may have mastered the fundaments of his/her system but that does not mean learning ends. The great samurai Miyamoto Musashi (1584 - 1645), said that the lowest level of samurai is one who knows only what his master taught him and nothing more than that..

    For some reason this Sanchin Kata is VERY different from the one that I do.....after the 3rd punch, we turn to face the back, do a chudan (all very slowly) and execute 2 punches, turn to face the front and execute 4 punches, 3 knife hands and 2 miwashi ukis. And yes, I know I have terrible Japanese spelling! lol

    I used to do goju ryu traditional karate and acheived my 2nd dan. The training can be unnecessarily hard, often taught by ex army types or over confident instructors with massive Egos. The belt grading systen is unfair and had NO international standard to measure against. Indeed you can go to several "Goju Ryu" clubs and they will all be different, varying the expectancies for each grade !
    I now am learning TaiChi Chuan. NO Grades - just time ! Best way ever !

    I practiced Goju Ryu Karate as a youth and obtained my green belt. I really enjoyed it but the dojo I went to had a sensei that let the business get in the way of the teachings and it fell to pieces with the majority of students leaving and the dojo eventually closing. Shame because I would really like to get back into things but don't know of a dojo in my area that teaches the Goju Ryu style. I wish I could find a sense like the one here in this video.

  • @trumblewumblehumble

    @soul76can have a similar problem. i moved, andwhere i live now, they only teach shotokan. I had to start muay thai and later aikido instead. Which are both fine, but my old dojo really was something, because they totally ignored any business aspects.

  • @spideyzx6r
    @spideyzx6r 12 лет назад

    You are getting confused between different styles and different Sensei. You can have 3 Goju schools and 3 Goju Sensei, withing 3 miles, and they will all have a slightly different take on the style due to their height, weight or strength. These guys are doing things "slightly different" to me, but to say it is wrong is ignorant

  • @Koryuhoka

    The loud breathing is only so the Instructor can determine if the student is breathing correctly.
    Otherwise, it is not done so loud.

    @trumblewumblehumble Lol, same thing over here, they all teach shotokan... Haven't done Goju Ryu in years, Goju Ryu seemed to be the primary karate style where I lived in Switzerland, so it was weird that the martial art university here (somewhere in Ohio) only had shotokan... I picked up a bit of Iaido instead, that was fun for a while, but I've been out from doing martial arts for the past 5 years now... kinda sad. :( Needs to get back in shape too.

    also, if your path through the martial way is more like a buffett than you will only have bit and pieces of this and that and nothing complete. Thus you may have learned from many sources being a jack of all trades but you will not be highly procient at one of them. First Master one and then learn from the rest. One system alone may take a lifetime for a person to truly master. Master Lee Jun-fan also said, fear the man who has mastered pme kick as opposed to the man who has mastered many.

    a 12 year old with a purple belt is unusual unless that 12 year old is some kind of prodigy i myself would not teach sanchin (Saam Jin - cantonese chinese for sanchin) unless they are at least brown belt. Up untill that point the only part of sanchin i would teach a low belt is the stance and the breathing. a kata like sanchin you have to work up to one bite at a time.
