Thank you for posting these videos. I grew up training Tang Soo Do karate but that was many years ago. Now I'm looking to start training myself as we have no solid karate dojo's in the area, and will be using these videos to learn a karate that I view is more effective and harder than what I learned in the past. Thanks
BASICS r not only for white belts, they are for all grades, the more u practice basics the more powerfull and reliable they will be. keep up the good work, great video.
@gojukanman That makes a bit of sense considering where your lead leg is when throwing that punch. I just always thought it as a straight punch since they started off in the chamber. It's something to think about. Thanx
I think learning something like this is inspiring enough. If you need new techniques to keep your interest piqued, then you're in the wrong game. I've been training in Isshinryu (a goju derivative) for about 6 years and we always start with the basics. Basics doesn't equal ineffective or easy--it equals the basis of their style. Show some respect to their ranks, yo. Don't judge them on an 8 minute video.
As OrangeKyuubikid said "The basics are the most important". It is the basics that are going to get you out of trouble and of course, the more you repeat them, the more likely you are to use them, without thinking, when needed. I will never forget, walking out of a door at a workshop and saw something to the side. I used 'Jodan age uke' (rising head block). I cut my arm open but stopped the ladder from smashing my head open!
@gojukanman I believe in that too but I often add in techniques in my katas and always figured whatever isn't in the kata aren't original karate techniques. So I think what I really wanna to know is if jabs (or whatever similiar or renamed) are in original karate techniques.
I liked this video...not perfect (hell, what's perfect anyway) but it's good, honest training. Some people trying to be so picky should really keep their comments to themselves.
Excellent video on the basics. Just one thing I noticed though. The black belt that you are using to demonstrate the technique looked like he was just dropping his foot after the kick at the beginning of the video. A big no no as an opponent could catch his leg and put him in serious trouble should he miss with the kick.
Dear Sirs, Those kick 8re important and awesome. But, if its Kihon Basics fo goju-ryu , isnt it better to start with hand techniques? Retired practitionaer of Goju-rz having been trainined in Goju-ryu as a defensive style. Best regards. Paul
The penetration power should be coming from the hips. If he were to thrust his hips farther forward by tucking them he would achieve a much stronger kick. That's why in hoju undo you are pressed upon the importance if the hip motion in all techniques.
We shall attempt to put up some inspiring and excellent Goju Ryu very shortly so that Green Belts know what they have to strive towards .... hopefully that will be of interest to you, ElvargCharcoal. Watch this space!
I know its basics but they should show you somethings that you can learn in time like when you're a green belt maybe so you have something to keep you motivated to learn.
He is also raising on the ball of the standing foot which is dangerous unless intended to lead into a secondary technique. Too much mass perched on a small friction surface allows for easy sweeps, throws, grabs and other counter attacks. This is why we maintain a flat foot against the ground for better stability. It isn't perfect, but seldom is any technique perfect 😏
it's not for me. i already know the style. its for people who don't know what the diffrence between styles is. and what things you can learn as you progree through. But yeah that should intrest me as well.
Dear Sensei Max Beddow. With all respect to your blak-belt but with respect tome over 30 years of practice in Goju-ryu Karate, let me ask a question: Which part of the vide starting with kicks and ksimultaneous countertechniques with both hands and kicking does the basic methodology form? Without receiveing the answer, my first impression is that the video it belongs to at least level three, to make it clear: To my experiences: Level one is about passive blocks, and reflexive counterattacs - without movement or with backward movement Level twe evasive movements with blocks plus counterattacks as a foíllow-up both siedes are trained, first as asgereed, then without notification. Level three might invlolve techniques performed simultaneoustaneouIsy with the attack either countered by hands or later with legs. The problem is in countering hand attacks by legs, is in the obvious difference in the both reaction time and action speed between hands and legs. Legs are, unfortunately to at least one degree slower,. Also experienced in my sports kumites. Videos as above should be preceeded by words of instruction or warning, to levels of the preparadness, not of the instructors, but the receivers of the message. Best regards and PERSEVIERENCE above all! Pavol
There are so many things wrong in this video that I can't even begin. For those seeking knowledge about Goju Ryu and traditional, Okinawan Karate techniques, please do not absorb any of the information ( or lack there of I should say ) seen here.
not a bad little vid but bad hand skills a good fighter will pick that you dip your hand before you throw it you should go back to guard straight after thrown or youl pick up the habit of leaving yourself open for a counter

some good old school stuff, great training osu!
This guy is really good. I do Isshinryu Karate and I'm happy Gojo Ryu is mixed in with it. I like what I'm seeing.
a great demo of good solid basics well done, and lets not forget with out basics there would be no styles at all.

I agree, good video
very nice instructor and the students are doing well
ITF Taekwondo
I always wondered if it was ok to throw jab like punches because my Goju Ryu School often have us start with a backfist.

+Mitchel Tietze the hip is major part of all the martial arts. So if you see this lacking here then the teacher is at fault.
The hip motion is VERY important in goju kai karate
Mitchel Tietze I practice goju Ryu karate and we must perform all or kicks and punches from the hipd
I like what I saw where are you located ???

Are there high kicks in goju ryu?
how long does it usually take to be a black belt?

Yeah, I noticed that, too...
In Portugal over 5-6 years
Details about the club are in the 'more info' section at the top right of the page next to the vid
the basics are the most important, if you're green belt you ought to know that
GOOD

feel sorry to that little guy who partner up with the intrustor :(
...zzzz they should show something that you don't learn on the first day as a white belt.
it is karate
it is not taewondo
Goju Ryu is nothing 0,0.
I smell BS....
and you call it "goju-ryu"? shame on you.
