    David, a student pilot seeking his private pilot license (PPL) is back for another flight lesson. This time we hit the traffic pattern, practicing both outside the airport area during air work, and bringing it back to the airport to practice landings in our flight school Cessna 172. He wanted to know how to become a pilot, and now he's getting the REAL deal.
    Learning how to land a plane, and flight training for that matter, isn't easy, but it has the best success when flying the airplane well during the traffic pattern and approach. Set it up right, and everything will come together. General aviation is where it's at! And it's just so fun to learn to fly.
    There are many elements to a traffic pattern. First, is flying the airplane. It's the golden rule in aviation to fly the airplane first. From there, you've got to think about the traffic pattern communication and traffic pattern radio calls. At first, I have my student pilots just fly the aircraft and focus on that, then go to the traffic pattern radio calls later.
    Once you get the traffic pattern, then learning how to land a plane becomes a much smoother process. You're going to see that throughout this flying lesson with David. Things really start clicking for him.
    Private Pilot training is actually a ton of fun. As a CFI, I really enjoy the initial hours of aviation training with a student pilot. Instilling those initial flying skills is rewarding, and actually fun.
    Of course, Alaska as a back drop for our flying lessons is quite nice. Angle of Attack has the perfect HQ! There's no better place for a flight school.

      Learning rudder control. Staying on glide slope while using rudder to stay on extended center line was a big learning curve. Once you get it, it becomes second nature.

      Pitch for airspeed, power for altitude did not click with me until my commercial training. Now I have my first student (and he is about where your student in the video is at), I'm trying to really make a point to be sure I teach things the way I wish I would have had or to notice if I need to change things up to help my student understand better. It has been fun watching him learn though!

    Thank you for your excellent teaching videos! When I was about 10 y.o. my dad and I used to go flying in a Cessna 172 that he rented. Although he is no longer alive, those were such great memories together and best times ever!...sigh. I have the bug bad to learn to fly now...I love your teaching style and the way you encourage and inject humor to keep your students relaxed. I so wish that I lived in Alaska...I would choose you as my instructor for sure if you are accepting students!!

    The key for me when learning to land (and I still am learning!!) has been speed management. If I can maintain the correct speed on each leg, I have a much better chance of a sweet little landing!

    Chris, one of the things I appreciate most about your style is that you seem STILL, after all these years GENUINELY enjoying the vistas of flying itself. Of course you have frickin ALASKA as your scenery!!! But even while training you're commenting all the time about how beautiful something looks and watching out the window - watching beauty. I'd SO get my arse to Alaska to train with you if I could! This training series has been invaluable.

    Chris, Nice job on the video. Really liking the live student training and David is doing well. I struggled with transitioning at the correct time. Always a little bit high. Still to this day I will catch myself a little early. Doesn't make for a smooth touchdown. Thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos.

    Radio traffic even on the uncontrolled airport it is SoCal and the traffic can very quickly overwhelm a student pilot and be very intimidating. 2nd was keeping consistent airspeed in the transitions to downwind, base and final. 3rd....and I still struggle with this is the transition to the flair and getting my eyes down the runway to stay centered. It still happens "too fast" in my mind and has yet to slow down in my mind so I am comfortable. Landings are really high stress for me, and I am having real problems becoming confident. I would like to just keep doing it until I get it. That how I learn. My instructor wants to go and do lots of other maneuvers and it burns time so I only get about 3-4 landings in per lesson. slowwwwwwww progress.

    Was interesting to note your comment that student needs to keep nose on the horizon. But looking at the video instructor sits much lower than student so different views out front ..suggest 23:42 . That's a lesson I learned sometime ago. Easy to overlook

    Use the feet to positions the nose on the centerline of the runway not the ailerons once I got familiar with this I could almost land without touching the yoke just trim and power. Great lessons you can see something new learned with every lesson your going to turn out a good pilot.

    Could you Fly down Sadie Cove sometime while filming? I built an A frame cabin halfway down on the left just past wilderness lodge at another little point that juts out, and just wanted to see If anything is left of it. I built it in 1971. Since I left Alaska I got my licenses, a couple thousand hours, and sadly let my CFI expire in 1980 and about ready for my reinstatement ride.
    I want to come see you and do some flying with you when I can, and if you get down to jacksonville Florida, we will do some flying here. Really enjoy the videos and they help with getting back into instruction and talking through maneuvers!

    Got me thinking. You teach leveling off by reducing power first, then pushing forward. The first time I leveled off on downwind in the pattern I pulled the power first, I did it too much, and my instructor had to push hard to prevent a stall. I've been leveling off by pushing first, then checking airspeed, then reducing power ever since.
    I wonder what the correct way of leveling off after a climb is under IFR, I don't have IR so no idea :)

    How long is your typical flight lesson? I had scheduled 3 hours on my last lesson and my CFI stopped at 2 hours. I would have liked to have more practice at each maneuver rather than just one left turn one right turn Etc. This was only my second flight so I need a lot of repetition to get muscle memory developed. Love your channel and especially your lessons with David I've seen maybe four I'm wondering if you're going to follow through his entire course to check ride.

    If I ever make my way up to AK and I'm in your area, I'd love to go for a flight! AK flying looks so much cooler than here in flat, flat Texas. Are you talking to flight service before departure? I assume that's an Alaska thing?

      Yeah, Alaska has the only FAA funded Flight Service. Still very useful here.

    Just curious, what software do you use to make your videos? They are done very nicely!
    For me though, was learning to maintain a good pattern and my distance from the runway while on downwind. You don’t think it’d be too big of a deal, until you are on your base and can see you are already low or high.

      Cruise prop, and yes, those are hooker shoulder harnesses.

    Here is the question for this RUclips
    when you remove the power to 1500 RPM, pull the carb heat on isnt the nose will sink down. Do you trim the nose up to prevent the sink nose?

    Wait--I am confused, does your 172 have a speed readout in mph? You are always mentioning speeds in mph to him, I'd really love to know why!

      Yes. It’s in MPH and on the outside. Easiest to see. So that’s what we use.

      Parzival 4741 - lots of older Cessnas (most old planes in general) have airspeed indicators in MPH. I think it was around the 172N where knots became the default configuration. Many older ones have been retrofitted over the years though.
