I agree with Mike - looks like it really happened. I’m also proud of Mike for not being fake news! In 2 hours I’ll be on the mountain getting some tractor therapy taking care of some fallen oaks as well. Have a safe weekend!
Something I keep forgetting to call out about your videos, the sound level is perfect almost %100 of the time. I watch other people's videos and have to turn my TV way up, then POW back to something normal and I feel like the speakers are going to blow. Thank you for that!
Mike great camera angle in the opening shot. The big oak across the trail with the RK in the background. Also very happy to hear no one was hurt on the Ford tractor mishap. I think that the photo of the tractor in the tree is real and a prime example of using proper safety when cutting trees. I am glad that he is ok and wasnt hurt.
Good morning Mike. Liked the work you are doing in the woods. Got a lot of wood to get cut before you get back to the original problem at the pond. You have your hands full for sure. Be careful. Thanks for sharing.
Mike, one thing I am learning from you is "slow and steady = safe and easy". Thanks for another enjoyable educational video. And the big bonus is you get to be outdoors.
That tractor picture looks real to me. the only thing I don't understand is if it was already leaning in the direction he was cutting it why would he be pushing on it to begin with. Also you need to get a chain grinder, I haven't used a file in years, just take a couple of sharp chains with you to the woods. That red oak was some beautiful wood.
I’ll admit it, I thought it was photoshopped. I seen the video on Facebook a few days ago. I was wr wr wro wrong.. This whole video was one of your best Mike! Hey Mike, This is Rich from Milan, Indiana. The movie "Hoosiers" is about our 1954 team. I teach at the middle school here. Love your channel. Milan is in Southeastern Indiana about 45 miles west of Cincinnati. I have a Stihl MS 291, a wheel barrow, and a real old Briggs and Stranton log splitter. Not too far from you. Live in Hamilton, OH but our farm/hunting property just east of East Enterprise, IN. Not much work in the woods today, looks like rain will continue for awhile.
@@douglashingsbergen4304 Great hunting in Switzerland County from what I have heard. We definately have had a bunch of rain lately. We need a dry spell so we can get things done.
Mike, your video is so clear. Looks like your using a green screen while you're talking. Whatever camera your using, keep it up 👍🏻 your content and quality really sets you part from the other channels.
We love the big standing trees and also the great lumber to enjoy in projects. After 50 years of cutting I can sure see that tractor tractor picture being the real thing.
There is a lot more saw mill stuff in that tree !!! They are not as big but they are fairly straight !! Good saw mill stuff !! Love what y'all do !! Thanks keep it up !!!
Man, that's a lot of BTUs. That one tree would heat my house all winter. I thought you were going to slide that smaller log under that butt piece so it wouldn't be on the ground when you cut it off. I just can't believe how many ongoing projects you have on your property. You're a blessed guy.
I think that picture looks real. Like you said anyone who has cut trees has had close calls. I've had my fair share of close calls and I've learned from every one of them.
Nice camera angle of that tree laying across the road Mike . Looked like you were in the forests of British Columbia with the branches hanging down from the top of the frame . Yes they are selling the tool rack and the trailer in Ontario now . Have seen them advertised on the Tractor Supply Store web site . Looks like the same trailer that your using . That's good because we see you using things and it gives the public good info on products if we are interested in buying something . Watching you use all of that equipment makes me think how hard the pioneers had it when they first settled the land . Real horse power and cutting every thing by hand . Tree stumps were used as fencing . Great video .
I’ve got a tree like that down near a stream where the root ball will fall down into the stream. Been putting off tackling the job but I need to get to it. There’s another large tree nearby and I’m thinking of using some straps to secure the rootball to that tee so it doesn’t fall down. Sometimes being out in the country can be like an engineering exercise!
HI Mike, I am up in Binghamton, NY, so not to far away. I just bought my 2nd pressure washer to keep my tractors and UTV clean. I noticed your tractors are always shiny. Well you and I both know that a day in the woods and everything is mud and filth. I wash my equipment constantly. Point is you should do a video on how you keep the tractors clean. Trees sometimes have a mind of their own. Never trust them. 😉. Stressing safety first (slow and steady) is a good reminder for all of us. Hi 👋 to the family. Have a great weekend.
Love that tool rack! Hey Mike if you ever want to make a logging trailer I have 6 mobile home tires on split rims that I think would work well. Obviously you won't need 6 but your welcome to them. Great video.
Holy cow Mike, the LIMBS on your tree are as big as any free I have personally cut down. I am still a novice at 64! Can't wait to see how you disassemble that monster!
It looks like there is enough evidence to prove the picture is real. The excavator being there kind of backs up the story too. Glad there weren’t any serious injuries.
That barberchaired tree with the truck on it is totally possible. Since I saw that professional woodsman cut down that leaning tree of yours and it barberchaired on him. That was one scarry moment. I knew cutting down trees could be dangerous, but had no idea that things could happen so fast.
I thought the hanging tractor was real from the get go for two reasons; first, you can’t make stuff like that up and second, if you live long enough everything will happen to you.
Wore my helmet & ear protection for a quick 1/2 hour of work in our woods. Seems like overkill, until a widow-maker branch about 15' long fell and conked me in the head. Not saying it would have killed me but I would have bled for sure. Was sure feeling smart about having a helmet on!
I too am self taught. Dawned on me after 25 years or so to seek out some quality info on technique. That's when I learned about wedges (both for falling and bucking). Lots more of course. Learned how bore cuts could be done safely and solve many problems. Learned a new cut that is particularly handy for large timber and may be handy on the big oak that is bridged from the root ball to the ground and cantilevered over the pond. I would normally start at the top and keep carving off weight until I reached the trunk. You could cut the saw logs and open the trail with this cut. It tells you tension/compression without binding the saw. Shallow top cut w/ shallow bottom cut in line but not enough to bind. Then a bore cut offset. The bore can't close, but creates 2 hinges. The kerf that closes shows compression. Try it out and see what you think.
this week we were cutting a tree down, and it fell on a wood shed. sucked. not much damage but u never want a tree to go in a direction you dont want it to. what do u do again construction foreman? Grade, road, utility?
I'm just a jack of all trades also I hold them logs up in sir cut them up so saw stays out if dirt you have the grabber I just use a chain and bucket Enjoy your videos good job always willing to learn Ole farm boy from Tennessee
I was actually looking for the video of a guy that had his forks in the crook of a lone tree that was side cut and the tree fell to the right taking the Kubota with it. This was pretty impressive too though.
Mike, if you could find a place on your tool rack for a vice it would make it easier to sharpen your saw. Without something to hold the saw we tend to rock the file especially with that Stihl two in one.
I had an ash tree do the same thing and the tree wasn't leaning. I notched the base and even before I started the back cut a huge gusts of wind caught the tree. Ash being so straight grain it split right up the center of the tree 30 feet. The bottom end that came up took out the power lines. This happened so fast there was no warning just a huge explosion of the trunk.
Lot of ash trees are dying or are dead.Just like you said Neil, they are a straight grain wood. From what I have heard from some guys that went through tree school, they are teaching them to throw a strap or two around the tree to help prevent barber chairing. Going to be a lot more pictures like this in the near future the way these ash trees are dying off.
About the tree tractor... one simple reason this happened,, the notch was way to narrow and when the tree bottomed out on the notch it barberchaired. Period. the tree was hardly leaning when notch closed as evident by the standing sliver, You're welcome!
Yes, like I said in the other vidja, look at the shadows, they are very difficult to replicate just right on a photoshop edited photo so that alone told me 99% chance it was real, probably more like 99.99% because almost no one has that skill and if they do, they are NOT bothering to photoshop this type of photo.
MIKE, it's nice to see that you didnt "go swimmin " in the pond or get your feet wet. I'm sure Mellisa will this summer when she has her pool? (I got yer back Mellisa !!)
I see you still have rounds there from a previous expedition, should have brought the dump trailer and took them home too. I agree about the hanging tractor, you just don't make up stuff like that, glad he and tractor are doing fine.
There might be 4-5 cord in all those trees at the pond. Depending upon how far you cut the limbs. A lot of Firewood content upcoming! And I could see that tractor getting lifted into that tree.
Does RK make a hydraulic winch attachment for the rear of their machines. It would be very helpful in a lot of situations you're in. Great vid. Yes it was a real incident.
You're right anything can happen. Few years ago my nephew was trying to push a tree with a set of forks on the loader. The tree was between the Forks. The tree snapped off fell sideways and flipped the tractor over on him. HE got a expensive helicopter ride to the E.R. collapsed both lungs and broken neck vertebrates. But he,s young and recovered just fine.
Something I would like to point out. As you cut up the trunk of that fallen oak, the closer you get to the root ball, the more likely it is to flip up, and back into its' hole. Woodcutters, if you take a child out to the woods with you, please keep him in sight till you are finished cutting. There have been a couple of children who were trapped onder a root ball. It is a hole. Where do you think an active kids is going to go? Often it is the hole. And it is not visible from a cutting position. We have had this happen in my area.
You're right Mike. Can't take anything for granted...I remember commenting here on PPE and somebody told me to "give it a rest". REALLY? Safety is 24/7-365. Today I was on my way to Ohio for my Uncle's funeral and I begin to make a pass at the 16 milepost (I76) on a scrap metal semi and he blows a tire. Well, that shotgun blast sends a piece of the side wall off my hood and into my windshield just above my head cracking the windshield like a spider's web. I'm going to have to ask the Good Lord what the name of the Angel is that's riding on my shoulder. Second accident in a month. Brand new JLU. Stay vigilant in everything you do!
Mike...Are we going to see the MS462 in action? I'm curious how many tanks it has on it. It's reported they really wake up after the rings get seated...say 10-15 tanks. I'd strongly encourage your to get yourself a stump vise. It is amazing how much easier it is for non-fallers to sharpen a chain in the field if the bar is not moving around. A friend in NY was letting a neighbor cut wood on his property. As far as I know the man is still in a coma from a barber chair. Showed me the tree and the result...hard leaner, lots of foliage also on the wrong side. Wanted me to tell him what went wrong and to finish taking the tree down. Should have bore cut it and I was not about to get myself involved in taking down a tree hanging 20' off the ground. Inexperience with a chainsaw around trees can injure, maim, and kill. I like how you preface all your chainsawing with the fact you are not a professional. Even the pros do not recommend doing what they do for two reasons. First is liability and second is every situation is different. Something may look the same but without years of experience and knowledge someone following directions won't know what to do when things aren't the same and the situation heads south in a heartbeat. There are times when we have recognize when we need to eat our pride and call n the pros! Keep the good content flowing.
I agree that the tractor picture is real. If you look at the bottom of the tree, it has been cut half way through from the front. The idiot driver then tried to push it over from higher up the tree.
I'm sure it happened I have encountered some strange occurrences with trees and tractors I have had to bind a tree together that was split in several places with 2 chains and two binders then 2 more chains to my tractor it was pretty nerve wracking anyone with more then a wet noddlee for a brain knows how dangerous tree felling is.
I think you're right, Mike. That's the real McCoy. I see NO signs of photo-manipulation PLUS I'm from Northwestern forest country and have seen some freakish things over the years.
I can attest that what was shown in that pic and videos was mild . I have seen Barber chairs that in the end left the but of the log higher in the air than the tree top was to begin with and I mean on good trees not little things like that one was. Its not always a leaner or off balance tree , Ive seen it on trees that had a hollow in them that just wasnt visible from the ground. Also trees that had been involved with lightening and then recovered over the years. Bottom line is that you treat every damn one of them like its going to do it and be in tune with that tree as you are down there working on it , not distracted . I have seen them rotate on their stump and completely turn a big old school saw into a pocket full of parts in seconds. Ive seen the larger and I mean too big at the stump for the cable to get it off the ground behind a 240 Timberjack , tree cut through and just stand there with nothing holding it. Creepy because there you are and dont know where to go to get away from the damn thing. I would have to run in the with the skidder and nudge it to make it go over. You work around trees and saws long enough you see some things that defy physics and logic so you better have your head thinking in that direction all the time to keep it on your shoulders.I figured the guy was pushing on that thing to get it to happen.... But like Forests Gumps Momma said ," life is like a box of Chocolates , you never know what your gonna get"
hi mike and Melissa this is Ron Albrycht from ct, first of all Melissa you commented about chewing gum I think it is great(I get a laugh out of it is cute ) and you have a Beautiful smile, mike I have a question on your trails you had some area near the pond washed away and mud, was wondering if you ever put wood chips down that you chip from a chipper it is very good on any trail keeps the weeds and things from growing and the trail from getting muddy ,(good drainage) ALSO THE DEER WILL NOT HEAR YOU COMMING . Hey Mike what are you going to do with all the wood from all those sawlogs?? Wood for your dream garage and work area for the sawmill???
Mike. You just love to say “barber chair”. Now you got to write it. Cool.

Contest suggestion: how many face cords of firewood will come from this oak tree?
I'm still waiting for the total from the big split. :)
@@Z-Bart And the number of pieces of wood in a cord! (unless I missed that answer)
Stay vigilant in everything you do!
i am sure that happened . did your fine lady get you on the first or was it onlt your daughter . great videos thank you
Mike...Are we going to see the MS462 in action?
That saw log is going to produce some beautiful lumber!
I agree that the tractor picture is real. If you look at the bottom of the tree, it has been cut half way through from the front. The idiot driver then tried to push it over from higher up the tree.
Agree with ya 👍🤠
When are you getting your mill?!?!?! ;)
Didn’t believe the photo at first but I do now. You should have enough wood now to run that splitter for an hour!
Maybe even two hours lol
I'm sure it happened I have encountered some strange occurrences with trees and tractors I have had to bind a tree together that was split in several places with 2 chains and two binders then 2 more chains to my tractor it was pretty nerve wracking anyone with more then a wet noddlee for a brain knows how dangerous tree felling is.
I think you're right, Mike. That's the real McCoy. I see NO signs of photo-manipulation PLUS I'm from Northwestern forest country and have seen some freakish things over the years.
Before you cut the logs from the stump....put a couple of the chunks under it...when you cut it won't go clear to the ground....
Seasoned Red Oak .Choice firewood. 👍
Do you ever use an electric chain saw sharpener?
Put a piece of wire over the Spill way pipe. Expanded metal works good.
You would think the bucket would have been destroyed or ripped off of tractor.
March madness on you're turf Mike? Don't worry, you have the tools.
I believe it really happened; Cherry tree, O George at it again huh!
