I’m so glad you spoke about cats loosing whiskers because I find them around my home. I rescue cats in my area I’ll bring them home, take them to the Dr. and they live out their life here in my home. I wasn’t sure if finding the whiskers meant stress from new cats joining our happy family. When I started finding whisker hairs I started to keep them, each cat has their own twist top plastic test tube for their whiskers. I started to save them to have their portrait in felt done but I wanted each cat’s portrait to hold that cat’s real whiskers.

I found a whisker when our cat was a kitten. My daughter had a small bottle in which she put unusual treasures in, like that whisker and small bits of sea glass that were gifted to her. We once had a kitten that had messed up whiskers at birth. It really upset her balance and walking. After she shed her kitten whiskers and an new set grew in she never had that problem again, thank God. That you for this information.😺💖

🐾OMG.. I thought I was the only one who did something like this! I am 62 yrs. old and I have been collecting my cats (over 25, 17 at one time) whiskers since I was a young child. In fact, in my younger years, I used to go thru my vacuums collection bin before I dumped it to find the whiskers I had vacuumed up! The white ones really stood out over the usual gray color of the dust, the black one’s not so much! Even after they were long gone I felt like I still had a piece of them with me! I had never thought about having them buried with me when I pass so thank you for that great idea. I am definitely going to do that! ❤️from a Grandma in Oregon🐾

Not a long time cat owner myself we always had dogs when I was grown up, but my wife always had cats. So we have had two cats so far during our time together. At first they seemed indifferent to me so I was the same to them. But our second cat finally started to get more friendly. He actually comes and lays on my chest when he wants a massage.
I knew whiskers help cats navigate tight confines, but all their other functions was very enlightening.

My last cat Buddy was so damn playful when he was a kitten that for like the first 6 months he'd come back inside every day with broken whiskers. It was kinda funny to look at really, a face full of all randomly short whiskers, all obviously broken from playing, and he just didn't care at all, it didn't bother him a bit.
As he aged a bit past 6 months or so, he started to chill out on the excessive play and finally his full set of whiskers eventually grew completely in.

My Penny has what I call "happy whiskers". One whisker on each side is upturned. Sometimes she's got both, or only one, and other times they're both gone. My Cody has curly eyebrow whiskers. None of them are straight. And all his whiskers are grey like his fur. 🐈‍⬛

From what I understand, whiskers are also the same width as the cat's body to help them determine if they will fit in a space.
I had a cat once who had to wear the cone of shame. I kept hearing clunking noises from my kitchen because she kept bumping into the refrigerator. I finally had to remove it because she was so disoriented without the ability to use her whiskers properly

    • @mellawes533
      @mellawes533 Год назад +4

Those cones are the worst! The circular ones that look like travel pillows are much better. Blow them up and secure with the velcro. Kong makes them with soft felt and they are way more comfortable for both cats and dogs. They can still drink but can't reach their stitches. My dog flat out refused to wear that plastic bucket. • @kh3612
      @kh3612 Год назад +2

What I find amazing is that Sphynx (hairless) cats usually DON'T have whiskers. My Sphynx had none at all! Sphynx don't seem to have navigation issues and are agile in the dark. In fact, many are acrobats and love high places; even walking places such as the top of flat panel TV's, and narrow railings in high places like at the top of 2nd floor stairs. So, how do they manage so well without them?? ☮️

I am experiencing whisker stress right now trying to remember all the cool things about my 3 cats. First cat was a white Persian his whiskers would stand out straight from his face sometimes. When he died I got 2 cats to replace him. One a lively calico the other a dense coated grey cat. Calico was 6 months old so her tag at the rescue said. Grey boy was labeled as 6 months old. She was adult sized and he was tiny I questioned that, as he was suckling her many times much to her annoyance. I awoke one morning to see that grey boy's whiskers were gone. not one whisker on his face- still had the bushy ones by his eyes. It did not seem to bother him . I forget how long it took but his whiskers came back so profuse they were comical. Unreal looking.

I'd heard of whisker stress and randomly thought it might have something to do with why my cat was so damn messy when eating. I got a lower, wider bowl, and the messiness stopped immediately. I have no idea if that was really whisker stress, but it was definitely the deepness/narrowness of the bowl that was the cause of cat food ending up all over the place around the food dish

A cat lose their whiskers when undergoing certain kinds of chemotherapy against cancers. It is a cyclical loss and regrowth, sometimes with color changes, as the chemo continues.
Cats don't usually have massive/total hair loss with chemo as do people or certain dogs (i.e. Schi tzu and Puli...).
(Most dogs during chemotherapy also only shed their whiskers.)
Thanks for a great video! 🐾

My kitty, Teeb, had intestinal lymphoma. It's a cancer of the intestinal tract and most kitties die within 9 months of the diagnosis. We made it to 23 months! 🥰
Her whiskers and grew them back and lost them but ... we didn't lose Teeb until 10/14/03 when she was 18 yrs old.
Our Bosco, a German Shepherd, had hemangiosarcoma. It's a cancer of the blood vessels. After removing his 4 pound cancerous spleen we started a 12 week chemotherapy. He lost his whiskers but gained 4 pounds because my mother fed him canned cat food with a spoon. The vet oncologist said he never had a patient gain weight on chemotherapy.
Sadly Bosco died almost exactly a year after his diagnosis. The cancer returned with a vengeance. Couldn't see his heart on x-ray through the fist sized tumors in his chest.
His ashes, and an orange squeaky ball, are in my mother's casket forever. They both needed each other.

Whiskers on the face also surge forward when a cat is lunging at prey so they can close their eye membranes and protect their vision. They act as a sort of prey probe so the cat can get the best chance at a kill. Such cute little murder machines.

My cats seem to like little bowls more for more hard food. And have larger bowls for the wet food.
But I looked below in the other comments and I see more people collected whiskers.
What if a cat loses a whisker... does he drop one of the other whiskers at the other side too?

I always wondered if cats have the same number of whiskers, but I could never get one to sit still long enough to count them! 😹

The whisker stress might explain why my most sensitive cat takes her food out of her bowl to eat. Not all the time, but mostly when she's feeling extra sensitive. It's time to get a whisker friendly bowls.

I thought my cat's whiskers were getting long, and thought to trim them.
Thankfully, I googled it first, and that convinced me it wasn't a good idea.

Once my kitty yoda came home from a fight, the top of his head was gashed by some other cat or animal. When he came back from the vet he was shaved to operate and they shaved his top eyebrow whiskers:( I was sad for him cuz they never grew back since he was maybe old? 12 at the time. But at least they stitched him up and he was healthy again.

I was told that the 2nd and 3rd lines of whiskers on a cats face are the most sensitive. 😺

This is a great video very interesting and intelligent. Why on my gods green earth, anyone ever cut the cats whiskers? That is insane and can people stop dressing their cats up. Let them be cat.s
You save your cats whisker, and if you have enough money, they can make you a new cat at Texas A&M. Look it up.

When my cat, Jedi, was younger he got his head stuck in a soup can. He ran around like a nut for a while, bumping into everything. When I finally caught him and took the van off of his head, it had sheared off his whiskers. He was a mess for a while. They did grow back. Did he learn anything? No. He did it again and has had his head stuck in other things.

What if they were cut short? My young son trimmed the whiskers. I noticed something look off about him and he admitted to it. Will it grow back? Is it affecting him in any way that would be detrimental?

Yes, they'll grow back eventually. This is an opportunity to tell your son the fascinating information in the video so he understands what whiskers are for and why they shouldn't be cut off or trimmed.

Cutting whiskers is cruel & de-clawing is inhumane.
De-clawing will only lead to biting.
The veterinarian my daughter works for refuses to de-claw cats
