no visible notes - no power points - no paper boards - no irritating background music - just culture and learning distilled in a mind - a great mind speaking with clarity and simplicity of difficult concepts. Heaven!
I wish we had the opportunity to have this gentleman discussing the Bible with Jordan Peterson. RIP professor Sugrue. May your memory be a blessing forever.
You talk about the Pentecost around 10-minutes or so. the Pentecost story is one of my favorites in the new testament. When I first heard it I saw that it was an undoing of the Tower of Babel which was an eye-opening realization about the nature of the New Testament. Thank you for another good upload.
I just want to say that Michael himself is the greatest reason why these lectures are so good. The way he delivers information and spins the story of any given thing he’s lecturing on grants the material a strange sort of cosmic significance that I haven’t seen in many other speakers. Whether he’s discussing Faust, Nietzche, Kierkegaard, or any other, he delivers the message in a way that illustrates the depth and beauty of humanities thoughts. Thank you Doctor.

I love these videos. It highlights how cleverly tailored the Bibles are. This does not mean the book is full of lies but it clearly had mortal hands writing them.
I try to imagine taking notes for lectures like these and I have no idea how I would do it. Too slow...I would have to record it and re-view it multiple times. I suppose this is where the textbooks come into play
I'm always looking for new interesting lectures on Psychology/Philosophy, please let me know if you guys have any recommendations, would be highly appreciated
Jordan Petersons lectures on personality and the psychological perspective of the Bible is spot on. Another would be Professor Kagan in YaleCourses. YaleCourses offers a bunch of different lectures, would highly recommend
Great lecture. The universality of the message is one of the great hallmarks of the faith. Remember Jesus is the second Adam according to PAUL and the last Adam. He is recreating humanity or pushing the reset button on all humanity completely undoing the damage for by the first Adam.
Paul died before the sacking of Jerusalem at the hands of Nero in 64 AD it was presumed. Therefore wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that Acts was written between 60 and 70 AD?
I agree. Moreover, the theory that Mark was composed after AD 70 rests on the assumption that he couldn't have *predicted* the destruction of the Temple, even though that's exactly how that passage is presented - Jesus' prediction of future events that have not yet happened at the time of composition.
It does not rest on that assumption. There are lots of Christians such as myself who believe Jesus predicted the destruction of the temple and still date Mark to 70 AD.
It would but only in the absence of stronger evidence. The lack of Paul's death in Acts could suggest an early date but there are many other indicators in Luke and Acts to suggest the later date and the evidence is generally agreed to override the former.
What a gifted teacher! The only thing I slightly disagree with is the assertion of Luke ‘sugar coating’ aspects of early Christian teaching. The passion narrative must have been truly shocking & repugnant to Luke’s first readership
It seems strange to claim that the description of the passion would've been shocking to a culture that had already experienced hundreds of crucifixions at the hands of Pilate and the like
Or ... it could be seen as a cult (one of many at the time) that was leveraged to great effect by those with power and authority (e.g., Constantine). Sure did a number on making the masses love their servitude and pledge obedience!
These lectures are so rare and fills a void in our present culture. Thank you Michael Sugrue. You are making a difference.
❤
Perhaps it was divine providence that Dr Sugrue uploaded so many of his lectures before his passing. Either way I am eternally grateful. Now...
no visible notes - no power points - no paper boards - no irritating background music - just culture and learning distilled in a mind - a great mind speaking with clarity and simplicity of difficult concepts. Heaven!
He has to be the most gifted educator/teacher/speaker I’ve ever witnessed.
He has notes on the podium. But this was truly a great lecture.

I like all your video episodes I have watched. Just want to say good work and thank you, Dr Sugrue.
Great job. Will continue listening to these
I agree!!! Finally someone breaks everything down in a way modern intellectuals can understand easily
Thank you.
Many Thanks for uploading the lectures, Sir. I greatly appreciate it.

20:00 The Magi are only mentioned in Matthew, not Luke.
Before I start, let me guess, we are not sure if Luke wrote Luke and/or Acts right 🙄?
Yes, Luke aka anonymous author wrote them. Luke 9:41
No luke the Apostle is author of gospel of luke and acts
Great lecture. The universality of the message is one of the great hallmarks of the faith. Remember Jesus is the second Adam according to PAUL and the last Adam. He is recreating humanity or pushing the reset button on all humanity completely undoing the damage for by the first Adam.
This bitch is telling us Bible is not the word of God, but an ideological tale books
The "according to PAUL" is very important to include here
It went from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to John, Paul, George and Ringo (the only Jew).
The only Jew in the Beatles or ever?
Paul died before the sacking of Jerusalem at the hands of Nero in 64 AD it was presumed. Therefore wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that Acts was written between 60 and 70 AD?
I agree. Just like Nietzsche's correct predictions about contemporary society.
Keep in mind that's an argument from silence so it's generally not going to take much evidence in the opposite direction to override it
The Gospels are like if there were 4 different versions of Star Wars and they were all awesome.
What a gifted teacher! The only thing I slightly disagree with is the assertion of Luke ‘sugar coating’ aspects of early Christian teaching. The passion narrative must have been truly shocking & repugnant to Luke’s first readership
Probably no more shocking than it is to ours. We don't see crufixions nowadays after all.
It seems strange to claim that the description of the passion would've been shocking to a culture that had already experienced hundreds of crucifixions at the hands of Pilate and the like
1. Jesu is prophet
2. Adam is first son of God, Jesu is second
