  • "Sitting Bull: Hear me, then for one last time. They mean to take our land away from us. You may say, "They wish to give us land. This patch to you, this patch to you." But here is the truth - each patch is for a man and all generations that follow him. And they know that this land cannot feed but one generation, not even so much as that.
McLaughlin: All right, you've had your say.
    Gall: Do not interrupt.
Sitting Bull: You teach our children the words of your God, "Be fruitful and multiply." But it seems these words are not meant for the Indian. For what kind of man would take a wife and have children he cannot feed? No Indian man. Not a Lakota, not an Arikara, not a Crow. You would have us cut off our balls and end our race right here on a patch of land on which nothing can live, and that will not happen! I have spoken.
Henry Dawes: We did not put you on this land. Red Cloud surrendered - he made peace with the government. Have you forgotten the bloodshed that came before?
Chief Red Cloud: Sitting Bull is a great leader. I believe this, no matter that the whites see us men all as the same. But he did not sit with us in the council those many snows ago when our reservation was made. He did not sit with us in the next council when these borders that we were told were like marks in stone were moved. And the Black Hills and our hunting lands were taken from us. Sitting Bull might have had his say, but such was his suspicion of the whites, such was his pride. I say today for all ears within hearing that if Sitting Bull had spoken the way he speaks today, I would not have touched that pen. I will not touch your pen to your paper. I will not touch it to your red paper, I will not touch it to your black paper. The white man will not see my mark again on his paper for the rest of my days on this earth."

Except of course that the land was never intended to be sufficient to support a growing population, but not for the reason stated. Few wanted to see the Lakota go extinct (it would be improper to say "nobody" because that wasn't true), but they did want them dependent on the government so that rebellion would be impossible.
Something to be learned there. When government makes you dependent upon it, it isn't doing you a favor. It's trying to keep its thumb on you. Never get so attached to government aid that you can't image life without it--because that is how a cycle of dependence starts.

In 1979, the Supreme Court ruled in United States V Sioux Nation that the United States had violated the Fifth Amendment and annexed the Black Hills without adequate compensation, and demanded the Federal Government pay 105 million to the Sioux Nation.
However, the Sioux refused to accept the money, since doing so would mean legally releasing their claim to the Black Hills.
As of today, the current value the government has to pay sits at around a billion dollars due to interest, enough to give every currently living Sioux 10,000 dollars, and yet they still refuse.
This scene very much reminded me of that.

Do we really need to compare the oppression faced between two different races? This isn't a competition. Pain is pain, and there is no such thing as more pain or less pain. A child losing her most favourite toy and a king losing his crown face the same pain. Let's not say "they suffered more than them" now, shall we?

Yet, you ended up on the reservation anyhow. This is a great lesson on knowing when you are beaten. It's a shame, but what they did do each other, their own people, and those who came to settle, was unacceptable and had to be dealt with. There was no other option.

The NMAI in Washington DC had a great exhibit on the broken treaties. All the US had to do was pull an Indian off the street, have him sign the treaty, and claim he was the chief. If there was a treaty from years earlier, the US always found a way to break it. The Brothertown Indians were moved ten times by the 1850's, to the point that they were shipped from Long Island to Lake Michigan.

“Not a Lakota, not an Arikara, not a Crow…”
I reckon he would know a thing or two about the Crow, especially, considering the Lakota stole the Black Hills from them, who, in turn wrested it by force from the Kiowa. Rather amusing to see them blame our people for doing exactly what they did to other indigenous nations prior to Europeans conquest. The Lakota were a very, very powerful people. They were greatly feared and detested by other great tribal nations in the surrounding regions, such as the Pawnee and Northern Cheyenne. Right around the time the U.S. was getting over the turmoil of the revolutionary war, they continued to push other peoples off of their land by force. They are not victims.

I believe the biggest mistake was to put the Noth American People's on reservations. They needed to have been assimilated. Of course, as with blacks, there would be a period of injustices towards them; this would work itself out in time. They would have been better off, as witnessed to the current state of reservations.
