Great vid! Just one suggestion...the siding shouldn't rest on the bottom J channel. You should have a small gap to allow for expansion and this helps avoid oil canning. Learned this from my cousin who had to learn this the hard way.
I am retired now but installed a lot of siding in the past. You covered the instalation well. I would only add that if there is a question on whether the siding is snapped in or not try moving the piece in question up and down. If you can't move it a little it is not locked in.
Great video, and I learned a lot. I have a question, though. When you nail the undersill trim to the inside corner, you are passing the nail through a solid part of the inside corner and so it won't be able to expand/contract.
Undersell is made to set back into j channel and corners. It’s wide enough so if you line the nail slot of the undersill and your inside corner, it sets back perfectly. You’re putting your nail through two nail slots.
Okay question so we are installing it ourself on our double wide it’s staring to dent in on some pieces only on some the vinyl creates dents and it’s not nailed tight. Also the vinyl is only so tall it doesn’t reach the top of the trailer. We had to do a transition strip like an H trim piece but worried about it leaking into it.
These vertical siding videos are outstanding. They seem to be the most detailed instructions on the web. What supports the weight of the siding? Is it the J channel at the bottom or do you put one of the nails at the top of the nail slot?
Do you need the utility trim on all 4 sides of the windows and 3 sides of the door? What's the plastic material behind the siding will that keep the outside of the wall waterproof while working on it in case it were to rain?
Very helpful video. Question, the bottom row of J-channel, it seems it would be pretty close to the the bottom of the sillplate (top of the foundation), whereas on regular horiztonal siding it would extend a few inches below that because of the starter strip.
Great video! Very informative. I will say, respectfully, that when you cut the siding at 4 1/4, you put your mark at 4 3/4. You might make an edit. Or not. No worries from me! 😁
If I have an existing corner post would I just install utility trim next to that to get started? I'm looking to replace horizontal siding with vertical.
Hi, thanks for the videos. I have a question and I haven't seen it on any of your videos. There are a couple of locations in my house for the AC disconnect and water spigot. They cut the hole and put the trim piece, but it doesn't sit flush against the wall because the opening is right on one of the ribs of the siding. Should I just cut the siding so the trim goes all the way back? I really don't like the gap, also I worry that water might get in. Thanks
Informative video but I have a question. When you nailed the trim overlapping the inside corner it looked like you drove the nail inside of the nailing flange without going through a slot. Won't that prevent expansion/contraction of the inside corner? Thanks! I want to do this with my home soon.
The color looks good and i love the way it looks, we're starting to see more of that style here in Canada. The installation is very much different here , the construction code would not allow you to nail the siding directly on the structure. A gap is needed with a piece of wood between the final structure and your siding allowing humidity to circulate. Rust might attack your nails , those going through your walls and isolation causing humidity and water infiltration over time. Keep a eye on the outside walls with concrete basement at the bottom, vertical rust lines are indication of water infiltration behind your siding.
You would just j channel each side of the board and continue on. Same as the top and bottom of this wall. Personally I would install a drip edge before the j channel but a lot of guys don't.
I have a section of siding at the bottom of a 2 story building only the top half of the building has siding the lower section is block. They are a small section where they were overhand small section built that has now been removed leaving me with open plywood and insulation. Can the siding be installed and connected to the rest or does it all have to be taken down and started over!? Thanks in advance!
Yes I have remove vinyl siding off houses that have had it on for 25 years. It will last a long time. And water does not get behind it if installed properly. Thanks for watching!
@@TheExcellentLaborer I’m with ya. Glad we added it too. Adds more character I think. Also wanted to let ya know I just finished my trex decking project. Your video on that was gold. My buddies thought I actually knew what I was doing. Haha
are you able to have one side of the house horizontal, and then another wall vertical? might be a nice way to reduce overlap pieces to make the house look a bit nicer. for example two of my exterior walls are 38ft length, so making those vertical would make it nicer I would think because removing overlap.
Should board and batten siding be strapped? I been told it’s better some people I know had their house done and not happy with it, they wished it was strapped
Awesome product. OSB sheathing would probably be a challenge due to not nailing on 16 centers. The strands of OSB have the tendency to split. Are they ring shank nails?
I feel sorry for anyone that makes a video.. There’s always people that have to give their 2 cents.. These people came to watch this video on siding install and theyre the ones giving advice.. Lmao
Notice how a good installer uses hammer and nail and doesn't drive the nail tight. Do not use pneumatic nail or staple guns people! Your wall will buckle and look awful when the temperature changes.
Do you like the look of this vertical siding or horizontal siding?
@@TyriontheYorkie Thanks Jason! I appreciate your comment! Stay tuned!!
Vertical!!

I noticed some finishing pieces along the bottom and top edges. do you have video on that part of the installation?
Can you do a video where you calculate and determine materials needed ?
Just like to know what you use to ripping length siding?
Hey on my Gabel side of my house I have to run another row above it because it’s longer than 10 feet ,how do I connect the two ?

The siding weight is held by the deck and the nails help it from falling off. If that makes sense. Nail in the middle of the nailing slot.
@@TheExcellentLaborer What would I want to use to support the siding if I don't have a deck?

On the siding box it shows a drawing and the mention shimming the utility strip, do you ever shim that? Thank you. Great video!!
Thanx for the video, I'm installing this exact siding on my house right now- hopefully before snow. I had no idea about the utility trim
Hey Bradley! Yes utility trim gives it a nice finished. Thanks for watching and good luck on your project!
Where do you buy it?
@@bmo5082 any building material supplier should have it

What do you do on gable end 4/12 pich
Just watched your video. I learned something today. My question is: do you use J-channel on the top and bottom as well?

Yeah I was wondering about that too, shouldn't it just match up to the holes of the inside corner piece instead of it being wedged into the gap?
What is holding the bottom of the siding?

Yes you should use j channel. Make sure to drill 1/8" holes in the bottom of the J every 12" or so to allow water to weep out.
What is the price of the square only labor?
What brand did you use here?

vertical siding should be "plumb" not "level"
Vinyl siding is straight up garbage. Insurance companies in Montana will drop you if you reside your house in it.
When and where are you checking for level?
