What tricks do you use to prefab your corner boards where they are hitting any number of different shapes in a roof? Thanks for your content. Keep making these videos.
I worked with many crews in the past 50 years and one trick I found useful to make sure all the measurements are the same is to start off with a 4 or 8 foot measurement and have everyone fix their tape measure to that initial measurement. A hammer works good to fix the tape measure start clip used lightly. It works wonders on a big project. You'll know when you reach 20 feet that it will be the same 20 feet on the opposite side of your project. Good video. Thanks for sharing...
Hey. Just wanted to tell you that your video has helped me make good progress on my own house as owner/builder. The best tip here for me, aside from making sure that everything lines up (which was never a question for me an my ocd..)...was how to calculate the batten lengths. I think in my hurry to get things done, I didn't even entertain the idea of doing the calculations, until I clued in that I got a 45% pitch...and rise and run are identical. I did my entire roof 12 OC and each batten was just 12 inches shorter or longer depending on the direction I was going, and that was a massive time saver. The worst part is doing the first one, but once you got the right calculation, using math is almost a must if you want to move at any rate. I was working by myself and was banging my head against the wall until I came here and re-watched this video. I did watch it some time ago in general preparation for the build, but forgot about that very important tip. Thank you so much. All my board and batten on the roof sections is now done, the rest is all easy straight cuts on the bottom :D
Matt thanks for the 5 tips & tricks. I see that you have installed the panels ahead of installing the corners and window trim. You show flashing the top of the window. with the panels in place. What or how do you now flash the top horizontal window trim? Thank you.
Thanks for this!! Can you cover the trim also? Do I flush the panels to the windows and then run the trim 4/4 on top OR do I use 5/4 around windows and try to get the siding to line up perfect to that? The reason for the latter is if we ever replace a window, we would only need to remove the trim .... ??
i am about to replace the siding on my house using JHP cement board. can i just install the strips only when the sheets meet? or i have to do it your way ? and do i need to caulk in-between the sheets and the side of the strips?
Man that looks great , Thanks for the tips, I'd love to know what the sizes of materials were , corners etc, and what about a video where you install the board ? before the trim and battens ?
The control line trick is really good! Any tips on how to template this larger paneled stuff quickly? Doors are easy, but around stairs are a bit harder especially when laying it horizontally. May the tilesetters can weigh in here?
Here is a handy trick for you. Make sure your first batten is dead plumb absolutely straight from top to bottom (very critical). Accurately cut a couple of pieces of batten to reflect your “fixed” desired spacing which will reduce if not eliminate tape measure errors. Attach a cabinet handle or wood block and one will be used for the up top guy and the other jig for the bottom guy. Keep the edges dust/debris free before using and quality check every couple of rows. Many ways to skin the cat.
Do you have a video on installation of LP Smart 3/8, 4’x8’ cedar smooth board? Intending to turn it into batten board with LP Smart strips 1”x2” by 16’
Do you need to make sure that the battens cover up the panel joints? Also, does each batten need to be nailed into a stud, or will it be good enough to drive the nail into the panel and osb? Thanks!
Yes, the battens need to cover up the panel joints. That's the whole point in the battens to being with. It's fine to nail the batten just into the panel and OSB since they aren't load bearing.
When it comes to painting, what is considered industry standard quality? Should I caulk the gap between the board and batt for the whole house? Also, what about the rough cut edges on the batts? Should I caulk that so it is smooth to avoid water coming in and ruining the batt over time? Great video thanks!
Matt the big question (to me at least) is how you trim window and doors when using hardie sheet goods versus clapboard style. Do you install the 1x4 (or 5/4) before the panel, or after /on top of the panel? Seems based on comments here that there's some disagreement as to what's recommended or code required. Informative video.
Hardie themself says you can do either depending on the situation. If it’s 5/4 trim then typically trim is done first; If its 4/4 trim then the panels are applied first and trim ontop
Very smart and accurate thank you. But, I've never worked with James hardee cement board. I was looking for tips on cutting and fastening the cement board.
Matt can across this video and There is a ton of information you present-- you could do a two or three part series on this topic. I think it would be awesome given the aforementioned questions.

for the boards, Do you use hardie plank with a seam under every batten or do you use 4x8 panels, where some of the battens are decorative and the other actually seal a seam?
@@MattBangsWood Thanks for the reply. I meant that some of the battens are purely for decorative purposes while other battens actually hide/protect seams. And then are the sheets applied directly on the house wrap? I see some people furring them off the wrap slightly for air/moisture flow. Thanks again, this video is really helpful for DIYers
I always get my layout from the middle of the house to have every space the same but I had the problem where the house owner wants the say layout from the top
Instead of using hardie plank, what type of plywood siding would you recommend? Would you use a tongue and groove? I was thinking of ripping down 1/4” plywood to make battens. Thanks

Building my first shed and my siding matches the OSB panels. Nailing on the same studs OSB and siding, not a problem, is it? Or how can I change the nailing for my siding?? Thanks
No - they don’t. As long as you wrap the whole house in OSB or Plywood you can do your layout however you’d like as you’ll have something to nail into. We disregard stud location if it means we can like bats up top to bottom.. I actually just finished siding a 3 story home, I’ll have a new video soon explaining more.

What are your thoughts on vinyl siding, specifically batt and board vinyl? I just recently moved, and where I came from, any type of vinyl siding is looked at as inferior. But my new location in northern Utah seems to have a lot of Vinyl.
How do you make the batten go from the roof to the foundation? Does it go over the seam flashing at the gable or is the seam flashing cut to install the long batten?
do you space out the batts the same? for example if I have a 7' wall then a 10' wall, would you space the batts out the same distance on each wall even if you'd have a smaller distance at the end of the 7'?
16" or 24" is standard and you will not change that or you wont cover your nail holes. When we build a house (watch current videos), we plan for batten layout as early as foundation.. Your battens land on your studs, 16" O.C., therefore we pull from one side of the house all the way to the other. When you want things centered, pull from the center, either 8" both way from the center or start with a batten on the center.. work your way 16" o.c. each way from there. Pull one layout, use it for the whole house.

For the area where the concrete foundation is exposed at the bottom. Does that need to be flashed? I don't know anything about this... Our foundation has what looks like old foam, with thin metal over it that covers the foundation at the bottom, but only in some places. It's corroded, and the foam is exposed and also corroding. I really can't see any reason why it's there in some places, and not around the whole foundation.
I was wondering how you do your trim, do you just cover the walls then use 3/4” hardie for the corners and around the windows? Do you flash the horizontal trim, if so how with batt and board?
