Another well explained on every detail that is needed and should be noted. As a Certified Home Inspector I was happy to see your explanation between the siding nail and a finishing nail. As there are a lot of times you won't see nail head sizes due to the over lay. One thing I see a lot is that builder don't switch between the nail guns and I find after looking closely a ton of finishing nail heads. All ask, well "what's the problem with that, besides a lazy builder not changing to the proper sliding nail gun and nail head size." Answer is simple, as I said before If installed correctly you shouldnt find many head nail exposed in the first place. But the biggest reason why you are to use a sliding nail with a head is to keep the wind from slamming against the outside structure and lifting the James Hardie or LP siding w and ripping it off the wall. As Matt said the ring shanks they're pretty tough to pull out at that with a big diameter head keeps it in place rather using finishing nail the wind would be able to just pull the sliding right off that tiny nail head.
I’ve found out that a dewalt nibbler does a great job cutting the hardie board. There’s literally minimum to no extreme dust and the cuts are very clean. You just have to look at your cut line & make sure that the sides of the nibbler is on it. Thanx, Donna
Hey Donna! 1) No, you don't need to, we just prefer it as it gives it a cleaner look, better finish. It's not necessarily for waterproofing as we have ZIP sheathing and aren't worried about a bit of water. 2) You can! That's the joy of board and batten and originally where it came from, was wood siding. 1x12" boards, with small 1x4" covering the joints. You can absolutely use a 1x2 or 1x3 as a replacement to the James Hardie Battens. This building was done with AdvantagePLUS trim and battens, but the product has since been replaced as they had a major issue with their glues back in COVID days.. They're not supplied to us anymore.
Great videos Matt , they’re very helpful . 2 questions. Do the painters usually caulk both sides of the batten before painting ? Do you notch out the bottom of the belly band a bit to slide the panels up or just Butt up and caulk the line
I enjoy your videos. I'm a owner/builder. Going to install Board & Batten. Do I need to consider framing so that the 4X8 hardi sheets break on studs in order for me to start my Bats on center of gable walls. Or in other words does the hardi sheets and bats need to be nailed through studs or just install the sheets in order to get my joints/bats where I want them an not worry about them falling on studs.
How do you figure out where the middle band board goes? If you're stacking 2 sheets do you put it how ever tall it is? Or do you find a fascia nearby and go with that and cut down each sheet? I'm getting ready to do mine but I haven't worked with hardie much lol. Big cut up house to. Do you flash the sheet and band board at the same time or seperate?
James Hardie Board And Batten What do you do in the point of a gable if the studs do not allow you to space the batten’s evenly on both sides? Thank You for You Help
Great vid. I have no flange, European style windows. They sit flush with the sheathing. You got any pointers on how to finish off the edge of the Hardie panel before I install the window trim?
Aside from nails, can you use screws? and if so, would it be bugle head screws such as Backer-On or regular galvanized screws (pre-drill before using screws)?
I’m a homeowner doing an addition. My contractor insisted that the z-flashing for doors & windows goes OVER the 4x8 hardi sheets and UNDER the batten trim. All the videos I’ve seen put the flashing UNDER the sheets AND battens. Is my contractor’s approach incorrect?
Did I see this correctly, you have siding going all the way up to the window, then window casing on top of that? I thought you were supposed to have casing first, then run JH siding to it, leaving 1/8 gap? I'm only asking because I'm starting to re-side my own house with board and batten from JH and trimming the window is where I'm stuck. Thanks
The one bummer about board and Batton and this particular method is that the trim pieces on top of doors and windows don’t get flashed, which is a common place for water to sit. The only solution really is to trim the windows and doors first, than flash the trim and then cut your panels to butt onto the outside of the trim, which is a hard cut to get looking nice. Any other suggestions?
Hey Matt, I'm guessing so correct me if i'm wrong Are you trying to hit studs when nailing the sheets or does it not matter? Since you're focused on bat layout the studs may not match that layout.
Hi great video I’m about to use this same material it do a ship lap design for a old mobile home I’m restoring to have a modern tiny house look . Very helpful information! When you look up hardy board it’s misleading so this video was very helpful to me ! I instantly subscribed thank you
Hey Matt. We are looking at a home with board and batten siding and it looks like there is no caulking around the windows/trim. That doesn't seem right. The gaps are bigger in between the windows and trim but you still need to caulk right?
What length / type of finish nails are you using in the batten board? Are the nails gripping the Hardie board to hold the batten board or are do they penetrate the Hardie and grab to the sheathing under the Hardie board? Also I know a framing nailer can shoot into Hardie board but does it damage it? I was just wondering what is the purpose of using a siding nailer (other than the fact that they are lighter and less strain on the worker)?
How much does replacing siding to install hardy batten cost? I've got a 1400 SQ ft single story home and was wanting to replace the top half of my home w batten. It's a new build and was just finished three months ago, if that matters. The current siding is hardy board going horizontally.
Can you fasten hardie boards without using battens….I am looking for a stucco kind of look. If yes…how do you hide the nails to fasten the board. Thanks.
Thanks Matt, Great point on Flashing. What do you think of just using finish nails with nail head depth flush, for fastening all panels ? Instead of large nail head ring shank. your feedback greatly appreciated.
Don’t use finish nailer shooting clipped headed nails for the hardi board, use galvanized ring shank with the bigger heads…helps hold panels from expansion/contraction and ring shanks don’t wiggle out of the framing
Matt, building a house and also doing bnb . Where your piece didn’t reach all the way to the go of the gable and you had the horizontal z strip . Do you just paint over that? I don’t like all the horizontal trim and wanted to bondo that seam, but reading that’s not a good idea
Matt I am adding board and batten to my house (gable ends) my question is my house the built with medal studs (24 ga.) what is the best way to install to the medal studs?
great vids matt, does each side of a panel have to land on a stud if 1/2 fir plywood is the substraid?? james hardie site says yes and if not then a special passload nail is required
Ive got a manufactured home, how would my layout be determined to land correctly. Im pretty sure I dont have plywood under my T111. Only concern I have for doing the siding on my place this summer. And if you dont get back to me I totally understand!
Do you think it's necessary to caulk where the bats meet the boards ? It seems like it would be a good idea at least on the ones covering the sheet joints.
I’ve seen people not use caulk and in my opinion it looks terrible. On a decent size house you’ll use boxes and boxes of caulk but it’s definitely worth it.
Does it matter where you start on the house with the panels? So that the bats look ascetically correct? One side of my house is 60 feet. So does it matter if I start with a full sheet on the end or should I start from the middle and go to either side?
Brian - if you found center of the wall, and pulled out to edge of building, mark nearest 16” to edge, start sheets there and never go off of it. You’d be centered up with a bat in the middle. If you wanted to center two bats equally off the middle.. find center, pull 8” over, then pull to outside and mark the nearest 16” to the edge, start there.
So i see we mention "choose your layout" But I don't technically have a choice, according to james hardie instruction manual. "Vertical panels must be installed on stud ends" This technically means you cant go into the fields between stud cavities. what are your thoughts on this? Struggling through this, as Im about to take on a new job here.
6:30 - The lower and upper batons dont match fully where there is a few split. Not sure I dig the board and baton look, but it looks like it is coming back? That was big out here in Phoenix back in the 60's-80's until Stucco became the choice due to cheaper, faster, etc..
Trends are coming back.... Board and Bat faded away mid 90's here and now it's coming back stronger then ever. It's mainly hardi L.P is being pushed out here. But I'm with you, not sure how I feel about B&B
6:30 Lower and Upper bats were photoshopped off layout to show how easy it is to catch. Good eye! I prefer it over the other siding that is common out this way.
Matt - could you share your opinion about the LP Smart Siding as an alternative to fiber cement products? The silica dust from cutting fiber cement is a BIG concern of mine as it causes serious lung problems.

Matt, building a house and also doing bnb . Where your piece didn’t reach all the way to the go of the gable and you had the horizontal z strip . Do you just paint over that? I don’t like all the horizontal trim and wanted to bondo that seam, but reading that’s not a good idea
Don't bondo it, just leave it. You can also cover it with a piece of trim like a bellyband..
Control line. F-ing brilliant!
Man, you are a life saver!
Great damn video! Saved me lots of heartache!
Is it necessary for the batts to be nailed directly on the studs at 16oc ?
To install sheets would you first wrap the home with a house wrap? And then 1 inch solid foam sheets before installing siding?
Great video, very informative
What do you use for the batten? And why not use James Hardy trim?
You should have some furring strips behind those panels to give some breathing to the siding. Also it makes the paint last a lot longer!
Matt, great video! Very informative! Do all the batts have to land on studs or is centering for esthetics most important? Thanks again.
A lot of people don't, but personally we do.
Great! Thanks for the advice. Awesome videos
Thank you for your video. Did you install the exterior plywood siding panels behind 2x4 which is supported for soffit and roof sheating?
Can you still build a pier and beam foundation on the central coast? My dad’s house was built in 1959.
No, not anymore. Many remodels we do are forced to put in perimeter foundation now.
Do you have to caulk that trim on both sides or is it fine the way it is
Does hardie board and Batten have to be nailed in the trusses? And if so how are you suppose to have a good lay out
Can cdx sheathing be used for the siding? Would it stand up to the weather if it was caulked and painted?
So, are your 1x2 battens a treated material or untreated?
So what's the standard overhang? I've seen people do 1&1/2 inch 1&1/4, and now I'm seeing you do 1 inch overhang. I'm still learning.
Matt - could you share your opinion about the LP Smart Siding as an alternative to fiber cement products? The silica dust from cutting fiber cement is a BIG concern of mine as it causes serious lung problems.
It’s pretty plain and simple. Fiber cement is junk and LP is the only way to go.
