  • There are still many months until the checkered flag is waved for the end of awards season, but James Mangold’s ‘Ford v Ferrari’ is generating serious Oscar chatter as things start to rev up. The ‘Logan’ director’s latest movie tells the tale of the Ford Motor Company’s attempt to build a car that could compete - and beat - the dominant Ferrari team at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1966, and critics are calling it thrilling, inspiring cinema. Matt Damon stars as car designer Carroll Shelby, Christian Bale as race car driver Ken Miles, Tracy Letts as Henry Ford II, and Jon Bernthal as Lee Iacocca, and all deliver performances that have them in awards contention. As the movie heads to theaters on November 15, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Mark Ellis sat down with Damon, Bale, Letts, Bernthal, and Mangold to talk about putting the audience in the driver’s seat, choreographing one of the most wonderfully sloppy movie fights in years, and some of the movie’s most memorable moments. Plus, each man shares his first car - and why they think theirs would be the fastest of the lot.

This interviewer excels at crappy questions unrelated to the film.

James Mangold gave a great IndieWire interview about the film and Bale, one great quote: '' I felt the role was close to Bale and prayed he would do it. He’s a model to me of artistic perseverance and flexibility. He'll text you with thoughts and free associations about the character. It's all incredible food. He’s a wonderful father, loving husband, great friend. He’s not interested in being famous. He drives a pickup truck, he’s grounded in the world, he raced motorcycles but had to stop when he got hurt, when he had kids. There are so many parts of Ken in Christian, who’s a perfectionist. He’s trying to achieve something for himself. It's magical to direct someone like that because they draw you into their own idealism. You feel that energy; it permeates the set. ''

When Damon says, have you seen Hugh Jackman up close? You don't tangle with that guy, Christian wasn't too sure, he looked like he felt he could take down Jackman 😂

Hope as good or better than 1970 LE MANS w / Steve McQueen or even Grand Prix w /James Garner. Both which gave good in car feel , pioneering cinematic techniques.

I think the press junkets hav just worn matt & bale down to a nub.
Not that thier not present in this, but they just hav to answer all these goofy & obscure questions,
& also people gotta always bring up old film characters they played & try to weave them into the new film..
Which is really kinda stupid to compare batman & bourne type of crap.
Lets talk about bruce mclaren or phil remmington or other people who where big players in the reality of this event in time but get no ink as to how they helped the "stars" of the film in real life.
    Gee, ask something like
" what charactor got the least amnt of screen yet seemed to be the most interesting in the bits of the real storys of Leman's youve heard old guys or historians or consultants on set speak of?
Who were the unsung heroes that made these men look good in the reality of this event iin time that you wanted to know more about?
    Some ??'s like that,
    vs ??'s like;
*batman or borne?* who wins the race or the fight....come on peeps.
Use this time to get some cool feedback...please...
    Its always,
    ,
the Mose Nowlands & the Ron Butlers & the Lil John Buteras , Remmintons, ect of this REAL RACING world, that helped these main guys who get all the credit on the achieved successes it seems.
Iacocca is certainly 1 of those men that got ink/screen time....i realize that...
& he got some ink in the movie for what he did for both FOMOCO & for the GT40 MARK racing program as well. Yet most remember him as the guy who saved Chrysler's azz in 79-80s..
    Which he did..
    Nuff said..
I really Hope we all enjoy this film 1/2 as much as the guys who really lived in it.
I know id hav give my left quavo to been apart of this real team in my best yrs .....

They're film fans not racing fans, what would you expect from Hollywood? Remington actually gets a decent role in the film, and is played by Ray McKinnon. I agree though that Bruce McLaren gets very much snubbed by this film, only showing up briefly at the end and getting no lines of dialogue, although if you want his side of the story there was a documentary about McLaren which came out a few years ago which included his win at Le Mans and talked about his extensive testing for Ford; he actually joined the GT40 programme a whole year before Miles, but obviously Ford v Ferrari doesn't mention this; it was always going to play up Miles' efforts (Which to be fair were still very substantial) at the expense of any other drivers.
There was a great podcast called Indiewire's filmmaker's toolkit which I listened to after watching the film, because they had an episode with Mangold on Ford V Ferrari, where he talked about some of the changes he made to the script and why; I found that really interesting.

Loved this movie so much as a fan of motorsport and Le Mans, easily a 10/10 for me. Only thing that took me out of it was whenever they showed the pedals or a downshift & how unrealistic that all was, which is a real shame. I literally had a moment where I groaned in the theater when Miles was side by side with the 330 P3 20 seconds down the Kemmel Straight and then mashed the throttle further somehow gaining 20mph. That combined with the wonky shifting and lack of heel-toe when Miles was clearly rev-matching would have been so easy to fix and could have made the movie an 11/10 in my eyes. Despite this, the movie still dethroned Rush as my favorite racing movie of all time & I was fine with the historical liberties they took to make the narrative more thrilling- hopefully there are some academy awards to come.

I thought Hollywood had given up on making story-driven films and was now just catering to audiences in developing nations with a poor grasp of English.
