Fractal Possession an amazing album that pulled me into their discography

I remember finding out about Abigor 10 years ago in some tribute to Kreator cd. I forget the name of the CD but they covered "Terrible Certainty". I dug their approach to the song so I decided to check out their own work, the rest is history. Great stuff.

Nice ranking! I did an Abigor ranking a few months back, can't remember my whole order but I am pretty sure my top 5 were:
    5) Opus IV
    4) Totschlager
    3) Orkblut
    2) Verwustung
    1) Nachtyhmnen
All 5 of those are solid, order could change easily. Really enjoy most of their stuff, but ya there are a couple albums that dont stack up to the rest for sure.

I'm not a fan of the newer releases, I thought they sounded a bit too sterile with the remastering. Part of what made the album so good was that cold and distant tone that made it sound so otherworldly. The harshness of the production will filter many, but the discerning listener can only marvel at it's brilliance. The song Equilibrium Pass By has some of the most sinister sounding guitar writing I've ever heard.

Opus IV and Nachthymnen tend to be the ones I see most people put up top, though more often the latter. Can't say I disagree, either: both are great. I've only recently gotten to SIA, but I was surprised how much I liked it since symphonic stuff can be really iffy for me. I think they just do it right without it sounding corny and overbearing, even on SIA where it is at its most prevalent.
Perhaps strangely, Time is the Sulphur was my first exposure to them, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It vaguely reminded me of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, of all things, in some of the weirder parts. Definitely prefer their earlier style, but that album at least has its merits.

Orkblut is also a great e.p. And Origio Regium, with all the demo’s. Great list, Nachthymnen number 1 for me, and Hollenzwang way higher… i gotta revisit the old albums, because i gotta admit, i haven’t listened to them intensely. I should complete my Abigor collection, the ones i don’t have are on the bottom of your list, luckily….

    7. Verwüstung 10/10 (I just don’t listen to it often enough)
    8. Supreme Immortal Art 10/10 (their best atmosphere)
    9. Orkblut 9/10 (held back by the excessive amount of interludes)
    10. Apokalypse 9/10 (BANGERS)
    11. Höllenzwang 6/10
    12. Totschläger 6/10
    13. Leytmotif Luzifer 5.5/10
    14. Time is the Sulfur in the Veins of the Saint 4/10 (this is so boring. You can tell they wanted to make their own Chaining the Katechon but it just doesn’t work)

I like Satanized very much. It has a well-balanced sound, guitars are high-frequency (like former times), keys are atmospheric, vocals are experimental but interesting and pure instinctive. the drums are quite chaotic, but I like this kind of loss of controll and even the kick does not meet every beat - fuck it, its not tekkno, is it?

to me, their stuff prior to "Nachthymnen" is easily their weakest. Not bad, just rather generic. After that, I'ts all gold. Can't pick a numbe rone, so here are my three favorites: Fractal Possession, Channeling The Quintessence Of Satan, Nachthymnen. Great, experimental band.

  • @mysticsaxophone4181

I actually really enjoy the more industrial sounding Abigor, mainly because that style is pretty rare to begin with and usually executed poorly. Early Abigor rocks but it's a bit more of the traditional vein. I own the whole discography so here's how I would rank them from worst to best:
    Satanized
    Channeling the Quintessence of Satan
Time Is the Sulphur in the Veins of the Saint
    Supreme Immortal Art
    Höllenzwang (Chronicles of Perdition)
    Opus IV
    Nachthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom)
    Fractal Possession
    Totschläger (A Saintslayer's Songbook)
    Leytmotif Luzifer
Verwüstung / Invoke the Dark Age

@@Tikus_90 I'm not saying quality as in the level of production or the clarity of sound, I'm saying quality as in they have a great amount of almost evenly good albums. I love me some lo-fi black metal, that's not the issue here.

At last, somebody dares to do some stuff of one of the best and most underrated BM bands.
    Disagree about Satanized.
The album is a jewel, but patetically "satanized" by TT by the fact he was banished by that time. He always talk sh*t about it and so many groupies of him follow that statements.
The best album is by far Channeling and the worst and really unbearable, insufferable is time is the sulphur...
