    I'm old enough to have watched this when it originally aired. What strikes me about this clip is how subtlety they show that justice isn't blind. "...on the other hand, he killed a woman, so I had to play it by the book." Such a great line and such an honest look at the criminal justice system.

  • @yesterdayitrained
    @yesterdayitrained 4 года назад +171

    Oddly, I actually feel sorry for Weiss- he is a tragic figure. He had two passions- his family and science. Murdering someone is always wrong (that’s why justice is meted out by our judicial system- the law is your recourse- not killing someone who wronged you). Weiss loved science so much, and wanted to share it with the world- not caring if he got credit or not. But he took the wrong path and not only killed someone- and he didn’t even kill his intended target- he killed an innocent.
    His apology to the family was genuine- and saying he would have given up his passion for science (or anything one is passionate about) - just to take back that bomb- is very telling. He clearly recognized what he did was wrong, and he was willing to give up something so dear to him- that says a lot about his character. However, no matter, justice should and was meted out.

Whereas worse people who try to play the system almost always succeeds somewhat.

      There is- in the context of this clip. Have you ever heard of someone being killed for stealing/derailing someone else’s life-long work- their illuminating discovery? Something that could have a huge positive impact on humanity?
      Weiss was not a danger to society- his passions were his family and science. He would never kill again. He didn’t even want the credit that was taken from him- he just wanted to move science forward- passionately. Killing the man who took and (mainly) derailed his work - preventing the world from knowing what he had discovered- was his intent (obviously very wrong- murder is very, very wrong) - and his biggest f-up was that the target’s wife, not the target, was killed. Not that it would be OK had he killed his target- but he didn’t take into account that bombs are not very reliable for killing the intended victim. I am not defending what he did- but I agree with Stone (although Schiff is also not wrong). - but this man literally killed in the name of science. Who does that?

      Manning's wife did NOTHING to him. She was the one who paid the price in Weiss' vendetta against Manning.
      Manning stealing Weiss' theory was despicable but trying to kill the guy was not the answer. Certainly not worth being taken away from your family and rotting in prison for the next 25 years.
      Schiff said it best at the end of the episode....Weiss is still a killer even if the wife wasn't his intended victim. And it doesn't undo what he did even if he is remorseful about it.
      Manning's reputation was pretty much shot after he took the stand. I suppose that's one tiny victory Weiss can claim, but again, hardly worth many years of improvement over.

    I miss the Law and Orders when they generally had real names of things: University of Wisconsin, Oberlin, mentioned the New York Post, etc. Later ones were cartoonish with made up universities and phony papers. Also, great expression of Kincaid totally clueless on his explaining physics (lawyers are just people afraid of blood and numbers...), and later not caring. Nailed a quantum physicist too. Relatable ones doing Field Theory, etc. and not just silly meme collectors are fascinating people.
    Sadly, a show this complex seems from a different planet with the drivel networks shove at us now. I think post 1999 is where L&O fell apart. Some good years with Waterston/Orbach, etc., but it just became cartoonish after 9/11 with 50 different "ripped from the headlines" silliness in each episode. Was a zombie money printer the last 8-9 seasons.
