      When people say The World's end isn't a horror I kinda wonder what their criteria is. Its a movie about body snatching aliens that copy people and then puree them. And a large part of the movie is the main cast being whittled away while they realize the entire town has been turned. The only reason it had a positive end is because its a horror comedy(which is the same reason SotD had a semi positive end). I think people just discount it because it's the weakest of the trilogy(but still my favorite).

    if he doesn't want to cover them it's not a big issue, but i would argue there are quite a few horror elements to each film even if they aren't overtly horror films

    • @BrokenGodEnt
      @BrokenGodEnt 3 года назад +34

      I agree. You could argue Aliens is a sci-fi action and not include it in a horror list if you really wanted to. But it's horror enough. Hot Fuzz has a ton of slasher elements in it. And The Worlds End is a body snatchers type of movie. Definitely still horror in my book. Just not as overtly horror as Shaun of the Dead.

    • @sarkaztik3228
      @sarkaztik3228 3 года назад +5

      @@BrokenGodEnt Slasher elements don't really make a movie horror, though. People can be picked off one by one in gnarly ways in mysteries too, but they're not considered horror. The only element that qualifies Hot Fuzz is the placement of a cult, but that's just a small aspect in order to make it a "Horror" comedy. (Haven't seen World's End so can't really comment on that) I wouldn't even consider Shaun of the Dead horror either, to be honest, but at least it has zombies, I guess. I think the biggest problem is that "horror comedy", while having the word in it, simply lacks the elements to actually qualify for the genre (although I presume takes this on a movie-by-movie basis). It makes references that one would typically consider part of the genre, but outside of that it's just a "coat of paint" to make it appear that way and doesn't really hold elements you'd typically find in horror The Cornetto Trilogy and Zombieland both fall under this. Outside of that, it's all just comedy.
      Aliens does have blatant horror elements in it, however. There is fear, dread, and "hold your breath" moments of suspense, hopeless moments and there is a "big bad" (well, "baddies") that are extremely traditional to the genre as well. These definitely fall under horror or thriller than they do Sci-fi or Action. (and of course I wouldn't consider Aliens a thriller outside of those attributes) Sci-Fi can be horror, and Aliens does that well. I'd argue even Jurassic Park has more obvious horror elements than the Cornetto trilogy does.
      Now, Mortal Kombat... there are definitely arguments to be made against that... but I think certain exceptions are fine, so long as it is stated as such.

      What happens in the story doesn't technically make it horror, it's the feelings the story intends to invoke that makes it horror. If it intentionally lacks dread, suspense, fear, anxiety, [and several other emotions that would be too long to list], it doesn't really fall under horror. The reason classic horror such as Edgar Allen Poe are considered as such is because of the affect the creator intended to have on the viewer (whether it successfully invokes these feels is on a person-to-person basis, of course... that's why shitty movies like Slenderman are technically considered horror despite not being scary in the slightest). In this case, if the comedy is too strong and it alleviates those feelings purposefully it wouldn't technically be considered as such. I think that premise definitely sounds like it would be horror, but I haven't seen the movie to see how they actually execute it and lean far into comedy or actual horror.
      Hot Fuzz, however, people are murdered by a silly cult but there's really nothing of horror there other than "cult". The whole thing leans on comedy and gore, which don't really make something horror. Shaun of the Dead is the same way. There are zombies, but it's not intended to actually be scary. This is more or less how "Horror Comedy" tends to work in general.

  • @_JustSomeDude_
    @_JustSomeDude_ 3 года назад +63

    I feel like you could do them by bending the rules a wee bit.
    Hot Fuzz: a dangerous murderous cult is silencing those who go against them and are brought down by two unlikely friends drawn together by circumstance.
    The Worlds End: An old group of “friends” reunite to go on a glorious adventure to find that things are not as they are seen, the town has been taken over by an overlord controlling body snatchers.

    I think at the end of the day, James isn't doing those movies because he's not passionate about them. While Jurassic Park and Mortal Kombat aren't strictly horror, the franchises are very personal to him, and so he does a kill count of them to share his passion for something not strictly horror, while also spicing up his channel with different content.
    I hear everyone's arguments about how these movies could "technically be horror" but he only seems to be comfortable doing those horror adjacent movies because he's passionate about them. Hell, even the Tammy and the T Rex movie was about a killer dinosaur (a concept he loves because of JP). Why cover these movies with a dash of horror in them if he himself doesn't love them enough to overlook their "horror adjacent" status? If he does just anything with horror elements in them, then kill counts like MK become less special, to him and the audience, and it opens the door to cover anything relatively horror (like The Watch or anything similar)

    1) I respect their decision to not cover them. It's their show and if they don't wanna cover it, then I don't think they should be forced to.
    2) The World's End might not be super interesting of a Kill Count. I love the movie, but most of the kills occur off-screen or not even in the movie itself. Even the with the ending, I'm not really sure how many folks get axed off. Most of it would be done through guess work without much concrete evidence. At least Dude Bro Massacre III was kind enough to show the killer prank in action and give us a concrete number to work with.
