She is the QUEEN. In '80 I had the stunning pleasure of seeing her in Sweeney Todd. My date was good friends, had gone to William and Mary with, a girl named Glenny Close, who was living with Len Cariou, who played Sweeney. We picked up "Glenny" and went to the theatre, then after the show went backstage, saw their Tony Awards, then met Ms. Lansbury and Mr. Cariou at Jo Allens (?). "Glenny" had just auditioned for Barnum, the musical that pretty much got her started. I was overwhelmed with the evening, still gives me chills. Mr. Cariou bought me a very expensive pack of some kind of cigarette ( I didn't smoke but when he offered I smoked!). Ms.Lansbury had a salad and went home. But, "Len", "Glenny", my date and I sat and talked for about an hour or so. Mr. Cariou ( he asked me to call him Len) talked about the special voice coach Sondheim had hired for them. We talked about "Glenny's" audition (which, of course, she won). What a night! Later I had to go back to my 'space' in a fourth floor, rat-infested apartment on the lowest, lower East Side. But, wow!
Was there any song Dame Angela couldn't sing! She was just great. I especially loved her tribute to the great Ethel Merman, whom I ' have admired all my life.
worked with Angela during final week of her tour of this show! A more caring, lovely star I can't imagine! I made a cake for her (well before I was great at baking)! I instructed the apprentice in charge of her dressing room to slip it in and swore her to secrecy! Of course Angela did not relent until she found out who made the cake, and complimented me profusely, even though the cake was a pedestrian effort! I will always treasure my experience with her, even if her offer of being her personal chef/baker was just
@@jeremiahgabriel5709 : To send Mrs. Lansbury fanmail, please see www.fanmail.biz/8185.html. However, it looks like she (as of March 2021) doesn’t sign autographs anymore.
I saw her do it in Dallas way back when - then I got her autograph at the stage door - what a wonderful person! I shall never forget her graciousness and interest in the fans.
I got to see her three times in her original production. For one of the performances I sat in the front row, dead center. Incredible experience. I also to got to meet her after the show. She's such a lovely lady. In October she will be 91 years old...and still going strong. What an inspiration!
I love her singing and I love her interpretation of the song, but I think the end bit where she talks is almost more important. There's so much theatre wisdom in that minute and a half.
What she says about musical theatre being owned in the moment for the people who are there watching it and the stats who are performing it is spot on. Of love, in A Chorus Line, 'the gift was ours to borrow...' and true of the music and performance of any beloved production in the heart of the audience viewing. A beautiful thing to say and, of course... Angela. What an absolute knock out in all she does. The woman is truely an outstanding performer.
Mrs. Lansbury is one of my all time favorite actress. My wish is to meet her in person in London one day. That would be the utmost altimate gift for me.
That was beautiful! Not only a great performance, but such a great speech!Shes so inspiring, when i grow up i wanna be just like her.Wow i sound like im 5 lol
What a classy, bright star she is! STILL! Take good notes fresh, new, aspiring stars.. THIS is how you become a legend! {i'm a bit surprised CBS didn't have a better handle on the 1st camera shots of her, for such a special as this, but still, Angela is SUPERB!}*****;)
This isn't the part I'd imagine her as playing, then again I was raised with knowing her as Mrs. Potts, but she does an amazing job with it! Every part I've heard/seen her in is absolutely amazing!
argh! Love her. Why aren't the Tony awards like that any more. I dunno, it's just something that she brings to everything she does - that little bit of Lansbury magic.
so glad i just found this. wow. i love you tube. thank you Angela. I'm a guy from Maine. so you remember the TV show where she lived in Cabbot Cove, Maine.
Never pass up a chance to see her live on stage. Saw her a couple of years ago in "Blithe Spirit" and she was the most energetic octogenarian I've ever seen! Marvelous performance!
Angela Lansbury, I love you. You were the sweet in "The Harvey Girls;" marvelous in "Anyone Can Whistle;" and the absolute bomb in "Sweeney Todd." This performance is 45 years after Harvey Girls, and she still kicks ass and still looks good doing it. You can't beat that with a stick folks.
I am old enough to have seen them all do Rose LIVE (Ethel, Angela, Tyne, Bernadette, Patti) as well as Anne Southern and Lainie Kazan!! They all were better at some things than others, but NOT ONE came close to Merman in the power and drive of that woman. And all the other actresses that followed had that performance to build on and grow from. She sang AND ACTED the crap out of it, and I will never forget it as long as I live!!!
Wow. I’ve never seen a person comment who has seen ALL of those greats do Gypsy. That’s phenomenal to be able to have memories of all of them. I managed to see Bernadette sing it live on a trip to NYC and loved seeing her and the production. On another trip over the preview I was supposed to see of Patti was cancelled. (I ran around the corner and saw the brilliant revival of A Chorus Line!) I’ve now added Imelda Staunton’s version in London too. I’m not sure we’ll see the like of those huge characters do it again in this modern era. But here’s hoping for another exciting interpretation in the West End or on Broadway with another force of nature soon!
Loved this Gypsy was her only London Musical 40 years later she appeared in the West End again in Blithe Spirits and the applause as she came on was deafening
Sassy, jazzy new arrangement of Roses.. nails it!! When shows opened with simple star power knocking it out of the park...no High tech graphics needed....
I LOVE ANGELA LANSBURY!!! Who didnt love murder she wrote?! And her voice as Mrs potts?! SHE is a living legend! I must send her fanmail before she passes!!
Probably the most respected person in theater. Such grace and humbleness, and such TALENT! We love you, Angela!
She was indeed and in the 13 years since hasn't failed to maintain and excell at it
Angela Lansbury always had the most elegant, stylish and exquisitely fitted gowns. She was perfection long before stylists ran the show.
When she hosted the Tonys all her gowns were designed by Bob Mackie
A genuine talent. A true legend. One great human being.
People like Angela should never be forgotten!

A dazzling performance. Ms. Lansbury is truly one of the great theatre legends!
How on earth did she have any breath left to deliver that speech? Superb performance.
I first came across Miss Lansbury in the Judy Garland film the Harvey Girls. Fell in love with her then . Thank you Miss Lansbury!!! God Bless You 😇

I saw this live the year she did it - and it was AMAZING! The guts it takes to walk onto a bare-naked stage and solo like that. What a Lady!
Gosh, her smile never changes 😍 and she needed no other distractions (background dancers etc) to entertain 🌹
that is probably the best tony opening i've seen. what she said was SO true.
People like Angela should never die :)
In my opinion, Miss Lansbury is one of the most versatile performers in musical history.
She is the greatest!
I sent her fanmail when she was performing in London and got a short letter!
I love this lady!
How does one do this? I know this comment is old, but I adore her and I'd love to send her a letter.

I love her singing and I love her interpretation of the song, but I think the end bit where she talks is almost more important. There's so much theatre wisdom in that minute and a half.
Love how her generation of performers knew how to gesture.
Deq Bes musical theatre performers still do now

Angela is the essence of Broadway! What a lady!!!
That's a very optimistic and "sane" interpretation of this song! Great :D She's simply the best ever!!
The fact that she was 63 here just boggles my mind. And still on Broadway at 86!
Absolutely amazing! A legend... along with Ethel and now Patti!
Well Angela you will live long in our memories !! Thank you for all the beautuful work you did during your lifetime !!!
That's Broadway Stars and their real talent--live performances, and actual singing plus dancing and acting. And all, just wonderful.
i love angela. she's the best broadway actress ever, hands down

Angela Lansbury is BOSS!
Thank you. Just Thank you!
She was also the first Mrs. Lovett! That's what got me into loving her.
20 years later and she's still winning Tony's!
She would have made a good 5th Golden Girl
OH MY GOD YESSSSSSSS
She couldn't she was doing Murder She Wrote at the time.
Then we would have Missed out on Jessica Fletcher.
Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur were pals in real life :)
@@jamie514 : They did "Mame" on Broadway together and won Tony Awards for it.

Holy crap. She does not move or look 64 here. What an amazing woman! Not for those reasons though. She is pure brilliance.
