  • Press reel of the first Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring Dame Angela Lansbury. She first performed it in London, from May to December of 1973, then took the show on an 11-stop pre-Broadway tour, finally opening on Broadway on September 23, 1974, and closing after a limited engagement of 120 performances on January 4, 1975. Joining Dame Lansbury were Zan Charisse, Rex Robbins, Mary Louise Wilson, Bonnie Langford and Lisa Peluso. This footage was shot early in the production at the Winter Garden Theatre, perhaps during previews.

Ethel Merman can’t hold a candle to this performance by Angela Lansbury with the guts, the passion, and her drawing from a deep well of some of her experiences, where she was overlooked way too many times. Just now seeing this clip for the first time and had no idea, although I think her tremendously and Broadley talented, I had no idea of the immense power of emotion she could dig into and reach and deliver like this performance. I had the thrill of seeing her as a 10-year-old boy in 1976. At that point, the only thing I knew about Angela was, the my aunt had taken me to see Bedknobs and Broomsticks in 71 because I have won a coloring contest that allowed me to get two free tickets to see the movie. I had a very cool aunt who always tried to broaden my horizons. If I was enthralled in something, she would do everything in her power to make it more exciting by articles or finding out information about the person or movie I was into. Since he had taken from you, I love that movie and was fascinated by Angela. So…now 1976, I remember standing in the front yard on a hot August day, and she said, “hey guess what? Angela Lansbury (Miss Price) is appearing in Chicago right now in a play called Gypsy!” I remember my mom and her friend Barb were in the yard smoking and my aunt asked my mom if I could fly to Chicago. Surprisingly my mom said, YES! Was she drunk? Who knows. Anyway, next thing I know my mom is upstairs packing me a little suitcase and we were driven to the Quad City Airport and flying off to Chicago! We arrived, checked into the Drake Hotel and took a cab to the Opera House to see “Gypsy” as far as I remember that was my first big it was pretty memorable all the dressed up people on the huge, beautiful theater. Then suddenly the lights went off and Angela and cast were on stage. I remember being overwhelmed. The show was amazing!!! I remember thinking she doesn’t look exactly like she did in “Bedknobs,” but then as a kid you don’t realize people change in looks over a few years.
Even though it was 47 years ago, I still remember it very distinctly. It must’ve made a huge impression on me! I the show, we exited the theater, and my aunt took me to the stage door outside of the opera house. We waited quite a while for Angela to exit in probably remove her stage, make up and blah blah blah, eventually she came out and I remember someone having a huge bouquet of roses. She then came over to myself and my aunt and said what’s your name and I said Todd my aunt spoke up probably because I wasn’t sure what to say. I just remember vividly thinking. Oh my God, Miss Price is in front of me. My aunt said to Angela he loves you and Bedknobs and Broomsticks she leaned over to me, grab my hand and said, “ I’m so glad you loved it, but I just want you to know I’m not really a witch, and I won’t turn you into a toad or anything!!!” She then signed my gypsy program and got into a limousine and I’m sure off to her hotel. It’s amazing how I can’t remember what I did yesterday but that night is frozen in my memory as if it happened yesterday. The next day I remember we looked around Chicago for the soundtrack because I wanted the music. I remember us being so excited to be told by someone in the know that we should go to roses records. I know they were big in the 70s. I have no idea if they’re still around in ChicagoAnyway got the soundtrack and got my signed Angela program and a happy memory ❤

Your page is quickly becoming top of the list "go to" for musical theatre. I've seen this footage a few times, and happy to see it posted again, reaching more people. I'd actually watched all of this in the last few weeks, and it's silly to complain when it's such a miracle that ANY of this footage is now available to all of us - but it would have been a real treat to have all or even part of "You Gotta Get A Gimmick" - but this existig footage was obviously specifically shot to capture some big Angela Lansbury moments. Speaking of which, ALL of "Rose's Turn would have been fantastic to see and hear, but the footage here contains approximately the last minute and a half, where we get to see how deftly she handles the breakdown. No dragged tempos, no vocal indulgences, and no overdoing of the self-analysis aspect of this legendary 11 o'clock number. It's doubtful that Rose, given her persona and the time she lives in, would get too intellectually thoughtful about feelings of bitterness and regret. Lansbury, not unlike what we hear on Ethel Merman's original cast recording, plows right through - plows, not rushes. Is she emotional and thinking back on some key moments in her life? Absolutely. But, not in the modern sense. She's able to touch on events and feelings, but in an angry, frustrated, stream of consciousness way ("it wasn't for me, Herbie ... and if it wasn't for me, then where would you be, Miss Gypsy Rose Lee?" - thank you Sondheim for that perfect writing). I saw four out of five of the Broadway revival Roses: Angela Lansbury (1974), Tyne Daly (1990), Bernadette Peters (2003) and Patti LuPone (2008). I was not yet born when the original production starring Ethel Merman ran. On the page here on RUclips where they do "who sang such and such the best," it was something like "who handled the final parts of Rose's Turn best" competition. I wrote up some thoughts about the various Roses (including Rosiland Russell in the 1962 film, and Bette Midler in the 1993 TV movie). Here follows a cut and paste of what I said about Angela Lansbury: ******Angela Lansbury (1974) I was 12 when I went to see this (good fortune - a good friend's parents were taking the family and one of their sons didn't want to go - I happily stood in). I knew the musical from the OBC album, but I had no idea that my life was literally about to change. For me, Lansbury is the ultimate Rose. Her performance changed my entire thinking about what musical theatre could be - much more layered, and complex that what I perceived prior (I'm not saying I was able to analyze it this way at age 12 - it's that looking back, I realize what a huge impact it had on me). Footage of her production can be seen on RUclips - highly recommended.******

I now teach youth musical theatre to young people. Some have made it to Broadway, film, Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe & Grammy nominations. What I am most proud of is that so many, who don't go into it professionally are bitten by the musical theatre bug. Take their kids to see shows and have such a respect for performers. I will definitely show this clip to my students in the fall (some already are familiar with the score from "Gypsy" via La Merm), and who knows may some of these "kids these days" will subscribe to this channel?

I don't know why they started wearing body mics; condensers were great and allow a better suspension of disbelief. I love Angela in everything and I think her stage Mame and stage Hello Dolly characterizations are the absolute tops.
I had to imagine and compare other actresses performing in the same roles in other shows in order to come up with my favorites.
With that here are my picks.
My top movie Gypsy mama is Rosalind Russell. And she is my #1 movie Mame.
Stage-wise my favorite Gypsy mama is probably Bette Miller. She has a voice that can both belt and rip your heart out emotionally.
My favorite movie Dolly is a difficult decision because the movie was deemed to be substandard. But I have to go ahead and pick Barbra. She just is too talented to count her out. Walter would not have been my choice to play the character but he grows on you. And Michael Crawford is building into THE best Phantom.

    Angela as Mama Rose. Gypsy
so many performers have attempted to play mama rose
    Angela nails it perfectly
merman was also pretty good in her day
Bernadette Peters surprised me with her interpretation of mama rosé didn’t think she could handle it. I was wrong she was brilliant
Tyne Daly was. Positively remarkable as mama rose
Patty LuPone also took a stab at mama 🌹 rose she was positively brilliant
Bette Midler did a tv movie on mama rose 🌹 impressive wonder what she would have been like in live theatre would of like that very much
My personal favorite is Tyne Daly as Mama Rose 🌹. but that’s just me
