And an Oscar! I mean … The Manchurian Candidate … her monologue about an assassination of the presidential candidate sweeping them into the White House … goosebumps!
One day this great lady of the theater will have a theater named for her what a class act she has always been and what a contribution she has made especially to musical theater ...
@@quizmaster85 It seems like throughout the 2000s and 2010s there were a whole bunch of gala events put on by theater associations honoring her, separate from the Tony shows.
Whenever I watch her accept an award it always feels like the way Jessica Fletcher accepts praise, validation, etc - even when the award is not related to MSW. But what did she mean by "It wasn't fair" after mentioning the other nominees?
Thank you for posting these clips, Without youtube and you I would never have been able to enjoy the many examples of Ms Landsbury's classy, articulate speeches and enormous talents. Thank you sooo very much.
And she was probably 84 here. 90 when she won the Olivier also for Blithe Spirit, in 2015. But I can't believe it took until 2009 for someone to think of making her Madame Arcati - can't believe she hadn't played it already. I think I say that partly because her costume reminds me of the one she had in the Death on the Nile adaptation.
Saw this wonderful lady in Gypsy twice in London in 1973. can still recall the ovations on her fiirt appearance and the end of Rose's Turn and curtain call. Standing ovations were not nearly as common then but she received an instant one on both occasions, Fifty years later and the memory still remains strong.
I love this lady. I first saw her in bedknobs and broomsticks when I was 4yo in 1988. It has been my favourite movie ever since. My Gpa taped it off the telly for me and I watched it so much it broke.
She truly is a legend. I was fortunate enough to get her autograph when she was in the production on Broadway called "Dueces " she was extremely gracious. I'll never forget the words we exchanged.
This is a very special clip of a special actress. With 5 Tony's under her belt, she tied the record with Julie Harris (The Belle of Amherst) and now Audra McDonald set the standard even higher by winning 6 Tony's and she's barely even halfway into her career.
......I honestly wish Angela Lansbury, Betty White, and Cicely Tyson were my grandmothers. Oh the joy of being in their presence and listening to their stories. :)
Thank you so very much for sharing! Ms. Lansbury may be Emmys biggest loser with 18 unsuccessful nominations and the Academy Awards also eluded her despite 3 nominations, but she truly is the queen of the Tony Awards and rightly so. Also her acceptance speeches are just the best. The lady is a pure class.
BRAVO!!! Grand DIVA of Broadway. Her Mama ROSE was historical. I saw it 3 times and it was never the same twice. At the PALACE THEATER, where it belonged.
Ironically Dorothy Louden took over the role of Mrs. Lovett on BROADWAY in 1980 opposite George Hern as Sweeney Todd ... I saw the production late June of 1980....the national tour had not yet begun!!!
It's interesting watching Lansbury's win in 1979. She was then already in her mid-50s, and she may well have thought this was pinnacle of her career. And yet, her biggest success was still to come with "Murder She Wrote". And, she would go on to win two more Tonys (one for life achievement), receive multiple Golden Globe Awards, have a major part in one of Disney's most popular films of all time, and work steadily for another four decades. What a career, and what a talent.
That is how you accept an award!! You don't stand on a soap box and tell everyone your political views - nobody cares!! You simply express your gratitude and love of the art form. Love you Angela. ❤
There are really very few actors who you can say were 'miscast' or 'wrong for the role' - even if she was in a bad movie - she was always top drawer. RIP !
In Hollywood they started casting her in "mother" roles and as characters older than she was and she finally said to herself, fuck this shit, I'll take my talents to Broadway and see what happens. And THEN television for 11 seasons!
ACTUALLY, Dorothy Loudon replaced Angela on Broadway before Angela went on tour with George Hearn (who had already replaced Len Cariou on Broadway.) I saw the original cast at the Gershwin (née Uris) then Angela and Hearn in Boston, at the Music Hall I think. This production (probably filmed on Broadway) is what PBS showed on Great Performances.
She beat Dorothy Loudon for the Tony in '79. Funnily enough, Dorothy Loudon eventually replaced Angela as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd. I hear she was wonderful.
She was wonderful, but while Angela played it in an English Music Hall style Dorothy played it like American Vaudeville, verging almost on slapstick. She wasn't as appreciated for it as Angela and the show closed.
Yes, in fact you don't have to be a citizen of a Commonwealth realm at all to get an honorary title. It means that you can’t be called Sir or Dame, but can use the post-nominal letters after your name (KBE, DBE).
Now if only the Emmy's and Oscar's had given the same amount of love. She deserved at least one of each.
She did get an Honorary Oscar a few years ago for lifetime achievement.
18 Emmy Nominations without a win, absolutely criminal!
It’s Criminal that she didn’t win for the Manchurian candidate.
@@melfortune5855 Perhaps an appropriate choice of words considering that we're partly talking about Murder She Wrote.
@@jessicalillianweinberg4401 oh my God that's genuinely hilarious
What's amazing is they loved her just as much in '69 as '09! On their feet and hollering. What an epic loss. We'll miss you, Dame Angela.
She was class. What a talent.
Loved her film debut in "Gaslight."
All of her honors are well-deserved. It’s incredible that she never won an Emmy for her years on Murder She Wrote.

Her movie The Manchurian Candidate deserved an award! She played a much older woman while still young and she NAILED it as a scheming mom!#!!

Wow, the ovations she got!

Angela Landsbury. Congrats on your 5 Tony Awards. I saw Angela in Sweeney Todd

That first win was a validation after the movie industry neglected her talent despite her proving it the moment she arrived there

From her teens the musical theater was her home and she lived in Hollywood exile till her fuse was finally lit in Mame.
