There were some Tony Shows, beginning in mid-70s, when the audience was instructed to stay seated, and not stand, not even for a standing ovation, as well as when to applaud or not.
And now, since you're your comment three years ago, Angela has passed. A good lifelong best pal of mine got to know her, via his marriage to playwright Terrence McNally, and his own work as a theater producer (my pal has one 2 Tony's!).

Why don't they spend the money and make these awards shows as good as this anymore?

It was exciting and just pure energy. It wasn't our first time in New York. We also performed at the Macy's day parade, Good morning America, and at the Rockefeller Center during this time or marching band was selected to do a lot of things within the state of New York and we were charged up and ready to go. As far as how we were selected I think it was more our band director Mr. Levy that had the connections and make sure our band was seen.

Is there any doubt what the best awards show on TV is? Year after year after year. The two tributes were extraordinary. I saw Mary Martin and Robert Preston in "I Do! I Do!" with my parents from the first row of the theater (we were just lucky getting those tickets by mail) and met Miss Martin afterwards in her dressing room. Everyone said my mother resembled her and she invited us backstage to verify or disprove the theory after my mother wrote her with the story. What a wonderful woman and actress. I loved her from "Peter Pan" on TV when I was just a tyke. She was clearly emotional about being part of the Preston tribute here. I was fortunate enough to see "Broadway Bound" and "Starlight Express" on Broadway that year during the short time I was visiting the City. Wish I could get back to see more today (and wish I could afford the tickets). But boy, does this video bring back very fond memories. Thank you for sharing it with us.

And once again, 2019 Tony’s, the most entertaining Awards show from start to finish! Corden a great host and that New York theatre loving audience, many of them actors of the Broadway stage, infuse the broadcast with such enthusiasm, showcasing their absolute joy for just being there. (Unlike Oscars etc where the audience looks like they can’t wait until it’s over)

I started watching these during quarantine. As a young*er* theatre fan (I was born in 87), it's so amazing to see these iconic performers during their heyday. Thank you so much for sharing.

Wow, watching these older Tony Award shows blows my mind with how simple yet extravagant shows can be with out such technology bloated shows up, i mean it's great we have the tech, but even the 76 trombone section was breath taking, now you have to have add Hugh Jackman. Also amazed at the diversity of shows, looking through the 70 & 80s shows, my gosh so many shows featuring Black casts, as well as winning awards, and Hamilton broke the glass ceiling of diversity...

Yes, I really really really really really have to have Hugh Jackman! Everywhere, all the time!

+Taylor Dean Wilson Not sure whether Hugh & Sutton will open on Broadway in the fall as originally planned. Also re: Hamilton - it didn't break a glass veiling of diversity; there have been shows with all-Black (or non-White) casts for ages.

@@rachel-in-the-208 A new production of "The Music Man" starring Hugh Jackman as Harold Hill & Sutton Foster as Marian Paroo is (or was) scheduled to open on Broadway in the fall of 2020. During the 1987 Tony Awards they had a live band march onstage playing "76 Trombones" (one popular song from that musical) to introduce a portion of the evening in which they honored Robert Preston (who originated the Harold Hill role on Bway & who played the same role in the movie of "The Music Man."). Sorry if that's more info than you wanted; I don't know who is familiar with musicals of the 50s & 60s and who is just here for the fabulous 80s fashion.

Funny how at 1:16:56 Bea Arthur sings to Angela Lansbury “like Orphan Annie and Sandy”, and then at 1:58:13 who pops up in the final medley but Broadway’s original Annie, Andrea McArdle... and in her Starlight Express roller skates no less. (looks like she’s pretty good on those skates, too. Can’t imagine its easy to sing while doing that.)

I know current theatergoers are too generous with standing ovations but damn, there were at least half a dozen truly iconic moments in this show. And those people were GLUED to their damn seat (until the Abbott tribute).
