I totally agree. While she did not have a conventional singing voice, the acting and the acting/singing moved the character so perfectly and her presence was the force of nature of the Rose! Rose's Turn was unreal!
I saw this on Broadway when I was 14. Tyne was my mom's bff freshman year at Brandeis 1965. Her performance was like Broadway's King Lear and Lady Macbeth combined. She raised the bar on acting for this role for all time. And she was the most gracious and charming person after the show, introducing me to the kid actors and reminiscing with my mom. I'll never forget it.
This is a great song " Rose's Turn" sung by the SUPERB Miss Tyne Daly, this performance is so OUTSTANDING, Just love the way Miss Tyne Daly sings this AMAZING song full of depth, power, but, also with pathos when Mama Rose has to let go. FABULOUS.
Another poster noted that this Roses Turn "makes sense". What a great way to put it. Tyne is an actress who sings. Merman was a singer who acted (or talked loud). There's a huge difference. This role def needs an actor who sings.
Angela acted and singed this role the way Sondheim and Julie styne imagined they even said she was better than merman. Her rose was rather unhinged and bitter
I saw it on Broadway and Her Rose's Turn was the first time I saw it really acted out and where it made sense. She didnt just sing, her emotional transitions preceded the singing. It was the first time I believed Mama Rose was breaking down during the "mama...mama..."
If memory serves, she had a cold or something when she recorded the cast album and you could tell. This sounds much, much better, and her performance really comes through. Excellent.
I've watched videos of several of Broadway's great divas doing their turn as Rose in Gypsy, an d in 'Rose's Turn" I have to say that Tyne Daly gave one of the best performances of them all. There was that certain something that made me feel she was Rose, very hard-edged, driven, a stage mother who pushed her daughters into show business to compensate for the career she never had.
A great example of how a non-singer can perform the role with such commitment one is completely drawn in spite of quite frankly overly busy direction and unnecessary movement. Still a brilliant take. Tyne owns the stage for sure.
I wouldn’t exactly call her a non-singer. She grew up doing musical theatre. She’s just not as flashy as some. Listen to the recording of her doing Call Me Madam. She is definitely a singer.
Wow, I saw this years ago at the majestic in Dallas, Tx…I have to say, I never got how sad this song is till I heard her fall apart on stage, to date this my favorite performance!
Only thing is Eder isn't enough of an actress. If she were, she'd have tackled other roles. She's only interested in singing alone, it seems. By the way I love Linda. Just not her bag.
Look up Rose Hovick on Google. The real life Rose was a lesbian. There was no Herbie. And Tyne Daly's hair and makeup resemble photos of the real Rose as well.
Very strong. The acting is spot on. Patti Lupone over did it. Berndatte's voice was not perfect but the acting was good. This is probably the best somewhere in the middle.
@@oldbonesNJyeah she does a bit much for me to be honest I get rose is over the top but patti in every role always sings like she’s making a point to prove only she can play the role which is why she is a diva.
Tyne is a billion times better than her "temporary replacement" Linda Lavin. She acts the hell out this. You understand how damaged and human Mama Rose is.
@@richardmayora1289 Yes and yes. Saw her "live" - an unforgettable evening. And what made it doubly so was that although it was a "star" performance, she was totally integrated into the ensemble, making it the most satisfying production I've ever seen of the show. And that includes the ones starring Lansbury (in London) and LuPone (Broadway), both terrific.
I saw this production. To this day, this was one of the best performances I have ever seen.
I agree - I saw it too and met her backstage - she was INCREDIBLE!
I totally agree! She was magnificent!
Watershed moment. She made this role more emotionally challenging for all the actresses that followed.
I totally agree. While she did not have a conventional singing voice, the acting and the acting/singing moved the character so perfectly and her presence was the force of nature of the Rose! Rose's Turn was unreal!
While not the best singer, Tyne is a great actress and did an amazing job. I saw this on Broadway and she blew me away.
I saw it too. And was absolutely pole-axed
she was my first and only Rose. It was magical ,she just grabbed the audience and we blithely followed.

Three actresses have won the Tony for their brilliant portrayals of Madame Rose: Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, and Tyne Daly.
SymphonyBrahms Ethel might have gotten her's late I think
JiNick no she lost to Mary Martin for the Sound of Music
Except Herman the 1st n best mama rose
And lupone shouldn’t have and merman should have
Bette (an Emmy) and Ethel should have…
The actresses who've played this role are INSANE. Love them all
YES!
I got to see Tyne and Patti play the role. One of the best musicals ever.
I saw this 8 times her performance was electric.
This is a great song " Rose's Turn" sung by the SUPERB Miss Tyne Daly, this performance is so OUTSTANDING, Just love the way Miss Tyne Daly sings this AMAZING song full of depth, power, but, also with pathos when Mama Rose has to let go. FABULOUS.
Oh, did she capture the emotions of anyone who spent too many years at a job that didn't pay off!
Bravura greetings to Ms. Tyne Dailey.

I will always ELEVATE and SUPPORT Bette Midler as Rose. Truly a knockout of perfect choices for me
The way she quieted her voice during "Get off of my runaway" was absolutely terrifying.
I actually saw this when I was in college, and she was stunningly good. Is she a “singer”? No. But she’s a fantastic actress.
I saw it on Broadway and Her Rose's Turn was the first time I saw it really acted out and where it made sense. She didnt just sing, her emotional transitions preceded the singing. It was the first time I believed Mama Rose was breaking down during the "mama...mama..."
Tyne was fabulous. Maybe she's not the greatest technical singer, but I had goosebumps when I saw her perform this.
If memory serves, she had a cold or something when she recorded the cast album and you could tell. This sounds much, much better, and her performance really comes through. Excellent.

Saw this production 5 times BECAUSE Tyne Daily was THE BEST Rose EVER. The role was made for her!

playing Rose is one of the hardest roles to play . THIS IS AMAZING
Tyne & Patti were fabulous. I know Betty Lynn did it at Papermil in NJ, but she would be divine on B'way. Also, great vehicle for Linda Eder.
I am a huge Eder fan but no.
Only thing is Eder isn't enough of an actress. If she were, she'd have tackled other roles. She's only interested in singing alone, it seems. By the way I love Linda. Just not her bag.
Betty's "Turn" was a beautiful recording. When she called out for her own "Mama? Mama?" She sounded like a little girl deserted by her own mother.
Brilliant.
so very thankful for this clip
I saw this too. I thought she was terrific.
One of the best Mama Rose ever! She acted the hell out of this number!
Good strong voice. She's great.
Tyne Daly has it!!!
I saw her live at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion...I was totally gobsmacked with the depth of her performance. FYI: Tyne won the Tony on Broadway.
Must have been exhausted after her performance. She puts everything into it.
Total star quality
4:38 is the turning point in this performance of Rose's Turn!
amazing
My personal favorite mama
Wow...possibly " definitive" xx
Powerful. It doesn't make the case for her singing, but her acting is complete, and her notes are on target.
Oh, look at that exit! What a star.
Look up Rose Hovick on Google. The real life Rose was a lesbian. There was no Herbie. And Tyne Daly's hair and makeup resemble photos of the real Rose as well.
Well, if it's on Google, it must be true...
She was also a murderer, what’s your point? It’s a “musical fable”, it’s not a documentary
Saw her, so strong! Audio is lousy!
Very strong. The acting is spot on. Patti Lupone over did it. Berndatte's voice was not perfect but the acting was good. This is probably the best somewhere in the middle.
Try Angela Lansbury
Lupone overdoes everything.
@@oldbonesNJyeah she does a bit much for me to be honest I get rose is over the top but patti in every role always sings like she’s making a point to prove only she can play the role which is why she is a diva.
the best
Does she sing anywhere in this especially as she goes through the "mama's" part? Sorry, no
Angela Lansbury No No No.
LOL! Repressed lesbian! I love it!
SHE SINGS BETTER THAN BETTE DID IN THAT "MOVIE", AND BETTE'S A "SINGER"
Now let’s not get carried away …
Tyne is a billion times better than her "temporary replacement" Linda Lavin. She acts the hell out this. You understand how damaged and human Mama Rose is.
You should see Hillary Clinton's version!!
Ethel Merman was better. She understood the song.
No........LuPone and Staunton are the best with this number.
You should see Angela Lansbury
@@ACinemafanatic, just saw your comment and Angela Lansbury is my new GOLD STANDARD
Horrible. Glad I didn't see it.
B Butler
You don't know what you missed! Sensational!
The clip, as is often the case, does not do her justice. She was sensational and by far the best actress to play Rose.
