As an American, I feel exactly this way about the current state of affairs in the United States. Everything is broken. And here, the anti-Democratic forces are still largely in control and wreaking havoc on all standards of civility, rational thought, and even the concept of reality. It is terrifying. We need a James O’Brien-Could we borrow him, perhaps? Thank you for another few minutes of sanity from across the pond.
What possible platform would he be heard by both sides in the US? One side has cut itself off from reality, often by choice. There is nowhere for reasoned voices to reach both sides of the political divide in the US. It’s beyond broken at this stage. Watching from abroad it’s been a slow motion car crash. Newt Gingrich, the Tea Party, Benghazi, Jim f&cking Jordan, Trump, Bernie Bros, January 6th. Broken.
"Couldn't believe my own eyes" Doublethink is a process of indoctrination in which subjects are expected to simultaneously accept two conflicting beliefs as truth, often at odds with *their own memory or sense of reality*. "To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself-that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word-doublethink-involved the use of doublethink." Right!

Wow! What a monologue!!! It was passionate, informative, dynamic and authentic. I think O'Brien voices the frustrations that so many of us don't put into words.
Johnson is the culmination of years of Eton-style infighting in the Conservative party - completely oblivious to the needs of the country. The Tories made him and they got what they deserve. He leaves an horrendous legacy behind him - one from which the UK will takes years to recover and will never have the same standing in Europe or on the world stage as before.
Rishi Sunak is one of these Etonian or Oxbridge publicly educated Tory toffs as well…history repeats itself. Party politics broken in Britain. Smaller government and less crime only answer
Well said and every bit of it true, I like you astonished how and why he thought he could get away with his lies and deception and still get ministerial backing it is a true reflection of how corrupt this government is and still the egotistical clown shamelessly clings on to the last.
Considering this, there would be absolutely no one in parliament. Everyone is on the soap, the one that doesn't fall, slips. The difference is that some are more painful than others.
Beautifully said. The UK once had an international reputation for honesty and decency. It will take a long, long time to regain that. May I suggest we look to our neighbour, Ireland, on how to behave.
Well said James 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Todays carcrash was a certainty the instant he was elected, only the final date was in doubt. And as for the rest of the tories who were prepared to tolerate his multiple failings as long as it served them .... utterly disgusting

This is no speech he is just speaking from the heart while speaking eloquently, every word hit as it was supposed to, why is it only on radio shows that people like James can express their opinion but on breakfast shows on terrestrial channels they have to use diluted English? Sometimes nothing hits harder then honesty.
Yes he has gone, but Johnson was just a small problem amongst so many. He leaves a country that is hurtling toward breakdown and penury. You asked the question "...how do we repair this burnt out house that is the UK..." You said no-one knows, and you are right. We will struggle along with our ideas of exceptionalism, and with the sheep of our electorate bleating on with the belief that we will always come out on top, and we will gradually take our place outside Europe, outside the G7, with a shrunken economy and a nasty, hatred filled media that will still be blaming immigrants and those who wanted to be part of a wider Europe. Where are the statesmen who can take charge? They don't exist, and because of that I feel utterly hopeless for the future and it hurts me to say that the last vestiges of pride in my country have now been carried off by the crooked spineless people in power today. Well you can keep it. I'm off.
The BBC, Sky News, the Sun, GB News, Talk TV, the Daily Mail and all other media outlets have been complicit in the lies. Not to mention all the CONservatives that have kept Boris Johnson in number 10 for so long knowing the full facts.

So true. At times I’ve questioned my own sanity. Couldn’t believe my own eyes and ears.
"Couldn't believe my own eyes"
Doublethink is a process of indoctrination in which subjects are expected to simultaneously accept two conflicting beliefs as truth, often at odds with *their own memory or sense of reality*.
Even to understand the word-doublethink-involved the use of doublethink."
