After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Edit: unless they pay a ludicrous amount of money for them to be red. Plus in the broadway show they are silver too, they just use red lighting on them to get around the legalities. Pretty smart.

they own the trademarks to the specific shade of green and the dress shown the original. thats why every wicked witch has a different shade of green to them @chasef89

This movie has some heavy shoes to fill cause the Broadway musical is a beautiful epic masterpiece! It's one of the best plays/ musicals I've ever seen.
I would prefer that they didn't make it 2 movies, but if they can adapt the full show + a little more from the book, I'll be content in a 4 hour double feature. Most musical films end up cutting various parts out of the musical for pacing reasons.

I really hope when we get a full trailer they show off more of the music. Lots of musical movie trailers seem like they're hiding the fact that their movie is a musical, would be nice to see a movie with music as epic as Wicked really revel in it and use it as the massive selling point it is!

Beautiful voice. I hope she doesn't over do the ending tho!!!! I guess I'm a die hard for the classic cast and get nickpicky on signature songs.
Its a very, VERY difficult song to since.. I trained in classical and theatre singing and it took me weeks of practice with that song. It takes a good amount of breathe control and pitch control. I'm sure it will sound great with tweaking if she struggles but I'm pretty sure she won't. She's a professional just like Ariana.

I have seen at least 30+ Broadway shows (I live in NJ). Wicked holds a special place in my heart as it was my first. That said, they better not screw this up!

Well, they did say they're adding a lot of new stuff into this story. That's why we're actually getting two movies. This one will deal with the first act of the play in which the credits will start playing right after Defying Gravity. Then we'll have to wait a year for Part 2 in which it deals with the second act of the play.

They're in the book. While wicked is a prequel it is also the story from the wicked witch's side, including the part where her college friend stole her sisters shoes snd gave em to some random girl 😂

I want to mention that this features footage of BOTH parts of this movie. So some of these scenes will NOT be in Wicked, Part 1 this year before people freak out when they later rewatch this trailer.
Yeah I just realized that when they finished filming it was for both parts. I was like. Dang if it’s taken them this long to film part one the next part is going to take yearsss. Super stoked to hear they filmed back to back.
I'm curious, where they'll make the cut between the two movies and how this will turn out to feel for the audience. Don't know, if they'll do it like act 1 and 2 or change it since defying gravity is such a strong song and could also work as cliffhanger.
I thought they only filmed Part 1 for now. But yeah, when I was watching this, I can tell there were moments specifically for Part 2 like with Dorothy meeting the Wizard and Elphaba saying the he should be afraid of her.

Most Final Fantasy 14 fans will finally know what G'raha sounds like when he sings. (Bailey is the English VA)
I was overwhelmed with emotion when I first saw this. This musical is THE musical that made me fall in love with theatre. I have been following the production of this film for years, and I am SO happy that it's finally coming out. Even though it's only the first act, I am so excited for Act 2. Ariana and Cynthia look gorgeous and perfect as Glinda and Elphaba and I am so excited to see their performances. The set, the costumes, the practical and special effects all look so gorgeous. I am beyond ecstatic for this.

You must be super young if it made you fall in love with theater. The classics should make one fall in love with theater no offense. You never watched West Side Story or Grease? Those are like rights of passage for any kid who wants to be on stage. Wicked made me like Frozen 😂.

A black lady shouldn’t have been the right role for the real wicked witch, bad casting but what can you say, it’s Disney
The only nitpick I have is that they didn't use music from the actual musical for a good portion of the trailer. Like the beginning part of No One Mourns the Wicked would make really good trailer music

In fairness, keep in mind this is merely a teaser. They generally just worldbuild in this one. They'll release a proper trailer soon enough where we can see more :)
It's a trend recently to hide that musical films are musicals... see: Mean Girls, The Color Purple, & Wonka. It's stupid af imo, and doubly so with WICKED, since everyone and their mamas are aware WICKED is a musical. Who are they trying to hide it from... But yeah, this trailer is still cool IMO, but as a musical fan, I would have liked to see more of the MUSIC part of it 🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀

I’m ok with turning broadway shows into movie. 3000$. That’s how much I spent to watch the Phantom of the Opera. 200$ for the tickets, 1,100$ for the hotel, 900$ for the plane tickets, and like 300$+ on miscellaneous stuff like food, gifts and other. And that’s just an estimate. Not everyone can afford that.
Imagine if you spent that much and didn’t like the show😂 cause I did not like Wicked. “Phantom” is the best though.

Yes that's why I enjoy the idea of adaptations, gives a vast range of an audience the opportunity to watch something they may not have been able to in a different area ( Broadway show etc)
