    *Round 1: PLOT*
It should be a tie, because the plot in Wicked is far more sophisticated, but yet it is molded around the Wizard of Oz's.
    *Round 2: CHARACTERS*
Wicked. They're more deep and interesting.
    *Round 3: THEMES AND MORALS*
    Wicked.
    *Round 4: MUSIC*
A tie. The Wizard of Oz songs are classics, and really original. Wicked's are straight masterpieces.
*Round 5: LEGACY AND CULTURAL IMPACT*
    Obviously the Wizard of Oz.
    *WICKED:* 4 points
*The Wizard of Oz:* 3 points
But we must take into account that Wicked is literally a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, so for creating something so wonderful it deserves... 1 more point!
    *So it's a tie!*
This is just my opinion, please take no offense. And thanks for all the likes :) And happy 80th anniversary❤

Well, I personally agree with the comment. Also, no one enjoys EVERY exploration on source material (look at “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “The Legend of Korra”; the audience was so divided when watching the sequel series). Sometimes I feel the categories are a bit one-sided, like that last one. Also, they’re not comparing the book to Wicked: the musical; they are comparing The Wizard of Oz (1939) to Wicked; the musical.

@@Karlwasright it was a very good book, especially with the sequels.
The musical is a bit different as they leave out alot of the Oz politics that were going on. It also never talked about the clock, or her birth or any reason that she was born green. It was the condensed "movie" version as to be expected. There were just alot of important plot elements that were left out for the glamour of the musical numbers. Though it was still a good musical, it was very noticable to me. 😄

Don’t get me wrong, Wizard of OZ is a classic although it’s characters are cliche, the story is pretty standard and the villain is two dimensional. Wicked was a way better improvement from a simple fairytale. Instead of making the Wicked witch (Elphaba) a two dimensional bad guy with only one motivation, they gave her a backstory, strengths and weaknesses, love interests, relatability. It makes sense for wizard of Oz to be nothing but a dream because of it’s “meh” plot and characters, but wicked is far more engaging in my opinion and Glinda also had more character apart from being “the good witch” there was actual character development, amazing songs, great performances, drama, tragedy, grief etc. It made something bigger out of a simple fairytale.

even though there's a whole book series of the wizard of oz, don't call characters "meh" unless u haven't actually took the time to read baum's books, plus the wicked wouldn't be here with the wizard of oz so-

      @supersqueek171 4 года назад +21

Mhylow Cat I have read the series and still think they are a bit meh. I find wicked goes way deeper into backstory. Wizard of oz just is too cheesy and doesn’t go too deep into different characters. I don’t think wicked was stealing from the movie. We shouldn’t take points away from wicked jus because it was based off the movie. I understand the frustration of people saying things when they haven’t read the books but from someone who has, I don’t really like it

    • @memebigboy3129

I agree completely with this statement. The characters in Wicked have more depth and aren't the classic 1 motivation villains and hero. In fact it provides love and friendship in Elphie's life and creates a sense that evil isn't born it's made.

The Wizard Of Oz is a very classic, iconic movie, but it’s kind of random and just seems like the plot is doing whatever it wants the entire movie. But Wicked explains all of that, how the flying monkeys got their wings, why all of the Wizard Of Oz characters need what they go to the wizard to ask for, and why her and Glinda are the way they are. So in my opinion, Wicked has to take the win. 😊

In every other iteration (both the 1995 novel & 2003 musical versions of _Wicked_ included), the Winkies [1] are just regular people forced to serve The Wicked Witch of the West, with no extraordinary skin color among them to be seen.
      1. As far as _Wicked_ is concerned, Winkie was devised as an enslavement term invented by the biased Ozian media to further defame our "beautifully tragic" protagonist, which was why they were otherwise referred to as the Vinkus royal guards (who still resented Elphie because their crown prince Fiyero fell in love with the green girl, even though they detested her personally due to staunchly believing all of the heresy spread about her). This contrasts with most other incarnations, which refers to the oppressed western citizens subjugated by The Wicked Witch of the West as Winkies for the entirety of their time in the story.

I feel that it’s hard to fairly compare ‘Legacy/Impact’ between an 80-year old movie and a 16-year old musical. One has had so much longer to become impactful than the other. I do see your point though about the possibility of Wicked not being created without the Wizard of Oz coming first but as someone else says, Wicked expands on more of the original authors multiple stories and multifaceted/multidimensional characters instead of the one story featuring Dorothy. This is the most important truth in existence. To understand this you need to personally read at least three books of the Bible, genesis, Mathew, and one you chose yourself. As you do you must do the inner work Jesus Christ taught. Start with forgiveness. Parents are easiest. Look inside for the grievances we all build up their and practice forgiveness inside your heart. It teaches your soul something important, heals parts that have become clouded.

Both have wonderfully presented values, like self worth and self love in The Wizard and acceptance and friendship in Wicked. I’ve done two different productions of this in a theatre (the Wiz and the Wizard of Oz) and I still don’t like it. However I love, LOVE, Wicked. Just better in every way and I don’t feel like you really need to 100% know the Wizard of Oz to understand Wicked. Sure it helps but not all that important. But Wicked just seems to stand out when looking at the two.

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life.
      Please trust me.

Wicked has a far more dynamic characters. For instance they all go through some type of major shift. The wizard of oz. Has a lot more basic and shallow characters that don't do though such dynamic changes. So the win goes to Wicked. The Music win also goes to wicked obviously. The Wicked is applicable to all ages where as the wizard of oz is just a childhood movie. So there for the plot is better. A lot of movies have tackled be your self. And I find Wicked as a better theme. Wicked will always be better.

The Wizard of Oz can be appreciated from many levels- symbolic, cultural commentary, comedy, drama, a snap shot of vaudeville, cinematography triumph, psychological commentary, etc. - whereas IMO, Wicked is mirror a straightforward story which has not so many levels to be enjoyed.
The Wicked book has more, but most of that hot flattened out in the stage adaptation. For example, the Dragon of Time, and all that it symbolizes, is referenced a few times, but it's not really incorporated into the play as much as in the book

It was a High School production but I still have fond memories of it. Both of these happened when I was a Freshman in High School.
