The biggest reason I’m so happy there’s 2 movies, is just how much story feels rushed or just never fully addressed in the musical. Now I love the musical as much as the next person, but I always felt so much was left unseen or heard. I'm actually very happy that none of the songs are being cut, including something bad, which I know is not a crowd favorite. However, it is an important song to the plot. And we're even getting two new songs, which makes me nervous but excited to see how they fit into the narrative. I'm excited there incorporating certain aspects of the book into the films. And we're going to see some of Elphaba's childhood. I want to see her relationship with Madame Morrible explored more. Maybe Elphaba could look at Madame Morrible As a motherly figures about way when she betrays her Is it hits harder emotionally. I don't know if there's going to be a post credit scene but if there is I would like to see the Aftermath of defying grafty Is where glenda's taken to the wizard and is given a choice to stand with Elphaba or be exiled or even have her family threatened. I feel like it would make her more sympathetic by the time we get to part two.

It's such a minor thing, but one thing that always stuck with me in the book is that it logically explains why Elphaba doesn't like getting wet! It does actually hurt her and she needs to use oils and the likes to clean herself. I would love to atleast see this touched on so it makes the ending more poignant to Glinda when she hears about what happened to Elphaba when Dorothy got her. Like I said, minor thing, but I missed that in the musical.

    • @joecascone2189

I would say this is definitely NOT a minor thing! I also found that to be one of the most fascinating aspects of the book and was extremely disappointed when it was not addressed nor used in the stage musical. I hope that it resurfaces in the film version. The ending in the stage musical (as she "recovers" from the "melting") was kind of ridiculous. The book's ending was much more thought-provoking and cathartic. Here's hoping!

The issue with expanding the movie to include more elements from the book, is that the show is campy for the most part and the songs are written to fit that world. Whilst the underlying themes in the show are serious, the show was specifically created to be a musical comedy that would appeal to a large demographic. Tourists can watch that show, have a nice time and leave without even grasping the message. That's a smart choice in terms of making a show commercial, yes. But to now try to lean into the heavier underbelly of the original source material, will be an interesting challenge to make work. Some of the lyrics alone are hardly high art and whilst they work beautifully in a theatrical setting, the darker elements of the novel will potentially make for odd bedfellows. The trailers look absolutely stunning. So here's hoping

I actually think the Wicked Witch of the East narrative should be in the "could be in the improved upon" column. I could have done with more insight into Nessa's character that shows the tendencies that lead to her becoming the tyrant we see at the end and I would also love "Wicked Witch of the East" to be its own number rather than just a sung line in an otherwise dialogue heavy scene.
I would like some more exposition about the connotations of "witch" as a term in Oz , given Nessa is only seen to perform magic once and is dubbed a Witch because of her regime, and because Glinda's role as the Good Witch is largely a figure head prop whose prowess with magic isn't emphasized as as it is with Elphaba, a wicked witch, (though I wonder if they will revert to the book's version where Glinda enchants Nessa's shoes rather than Elphaba). It seems the term "witch" carries a lot of political weight and yet is morally neutral because Good and Wicked witches exist. Linked to this I would be interested in whether Madame Morrible identifies as a witch. She is clearly a sorceress and hugely influential politically and yet I don't recall her ever being called a witch.

I keep seeing Elphaba and Glinda at the door to the Emerald Palace with guards and others trying to get through the door to catch the 'Wicked Witch'. And as the song progress and Glinda declines to join Elphaba, the city gets darker and darker and as Elphaba performs her Levitation spell, her black dress sprouts and grows (like Chistery's wing grew when she performed the spell on them). As she finishes her spell and starts flying her broom glows with a tint of green and the night sky turns into an Aurora borealis and as she sings her final words directly to Glinda, there is a glimmer of bright light to the West and as she leaves OZ the Glimmer gets bigger and bigger and the screen transition from the night sky to this bright glimmer that takes over the full screen and ENDS! Let Elphaba have the final word and scene!

I do disagree with messing around with a stage show. If done with skill, altering the order of songs and ever who's singing them, can work. Spielberg's "West Side Story" is proof of that. That is a movie that completely gutted the dialogue and messed around with the songs but it works and makes the movie not just a filmed version of the stage play (or even a remake of the original movie) but it's own creation and one that can stand toe-to-toe with the Best Picture winner.
Likewise, "Little Shop of Horrors" had a COMPLETELY different ending than the stage show (mostly because they original filmed ending did not play well with movie audiences) and brought in a wonderful ending with a song that was justifiably nominated for "Best Original Song".
Thu, with 2 movies, they definitely have room to do that. Hopefully, the songs they will add will be on par with the stage version. However it is, expect this to open BIG at Thanksgiving time.

ROB MARSHAL, butchering the pace and RYHTHEM of 'All that Jazz' and dropping the 2nd Act opening number, CAN YOU IMAGINE, I MEAN DO YOU BELIEVE IT!

The only thing i disliked from John M. Chu's in the heights adaptation is the treatment to Abuela, in the stage show she's like the coreo of the community meanwhile in the movie she lost almost all her depth so the Alabanza scene doesn't feel that much as in the sow and also being followed by Carnaval del barrio doesn't help to the feeling

@@manuelorozco7760 i didn't like it. It's like "Guys Abuela died, anyway let's celebrate". I also can't understand Camila being cut, in various interviews Quiara said that she wants to focus just in two matriarchs: Abuela Claudia and Daniela, but Abuela Claudia's song and history where cut, there's no part between Abuela and Usnavi talking about the lotery in Blackout, also "Hundred of stories" was cutted. Daniela's role in the movie was also cut. I think the main problem was time run of the movie

I thought the same thing having not liked her acting previously. (She can sing, but Hairspray Live was awful on so many levels.) But she is a true fan of this show. She's been obsessed since she was a child. If there is any role she's going to be able to pull off, it's this one. And the more and more I see of her... well I now think she's going to surprise all the skeptics.

    • @ei5287

There's nothing behind her eyes. She might have gotten away with it on stage, but oh man, the trailer makes it very clear she's doing a surface level imitation of Chenowith playing Glinda. I hope the voice over asking "Are people born wicked" is not the take they go with because I think she's only listening to her tone and not thinking about what she's saying.

Best video about Wicked I have seen thus far: thank you MsMojo! 🧡The original musical is a little under 3 hours; with a 2 part movie (each at least two hours) we should get more story.
It would make since the storylines should include the wizard seducing Melena Thropp, the strained relationship of the "father" and sister rivalry between NessaRose and Elphaba and WHY the shoes are so important, and the best part that should remain is the double entendre references to the original Wizard of Oz movie.
There is a franchise here and if "they" (the production team) are smart they will enhance the Fieryo storyline so Son of a Witch can be the sequel. Troye Sivan would be perfect but may be too old by the time filming begins.
Both Idina and Kristen should have cameos.

Equally dumb is the belief that because they wanted the role it's right for them. Are you for real? Maybe instead of jumping to conclusions and showing your own internal bias and racism you should stop jumping to conclusions. The comment said she is a terrible actress. Although an opinion no less valid than any of yours it doesn't point to her race being a factor. Perhaps you should spend less time trying to find an argument to let everyone know how morally superior you are and take some time to actually read the comment and apply some critical thinking skills before responding. You can avoid a great deal of embarrassment by doing so.
