    I photographed Space in the 90s during their tours and festivals. I was instantly taken by their music and natural talents. The original drummer, Andy Parle was exceptionally gifted. I ended up becoming friends with the band and hope to see them touring later this year. I went on to tour with The Coral and Maximo park. Both talented musicians.

    This is such a perfectly written song. Nice riff on the vibes, catchy chorus without being annoying, and interesting lyrics. I can't imagine anybody disliking this song, yet these days there's so much shit being pumped out that only certain groups will like. @Debbie Brown: A lot of the indie bands were heavily influenced by the 1960's. The movie Austin Powers International Man of Mystery [ 1997] used it as well as the ITV drama series, Cold Feet [ 1999[ Pilot]- 2020 series is currently on a hiatus again ]. I miss both the 80's and the 90's.

      I've been wondering this too! lol I think some of the accompanying instruments like the maribimba (I think?) sounds more 60s, yet the style of singing seems more 90s, and that's how it has this paradoxical feeling of having both :)

    • @DR3ADER1
      @DR3ADER1 Год назад +3

      It's part of the 30-year gap. In the 80s, people were nostalgic over the 50s, with the revival of Noir films and Neo-Noir pastiches such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and remakes of films from the 50s such as Scarface. In the 2010s, people were nostalgic over the 80s, with the rise of vapourwave and new wave music. As such, in the 90s, people were nostalgic over the 60s. Ergo the homage to 60s films and shows like James Bond in the form of Austin Powers and The Saint getting revived for the 90s, not to mention cartoons such as Dexter's Laboratory being heavily influenced by 60s cartoons in terms of design.

    Lyrics of this quality haven’t been seen for a decade or two. And the melody is sublime. It’s a 10. If you did only have one song- it may as well be this. The 90’s it had it all and more. Sure the 60’s were the bedrock of modern music, but the 90’s brought forth multiple genres that weren’t even born yet.

    The amount exposure this song got at the time back in 1996 was insane - very heavy radio airplay, frequent MTV / VH-1 rotation, they performed it on Top Of The Pops, it got a lot of love from ITV's The Chart Show too... It was featured in numerous TV shows and adverts (and possibly a film in that era too, although that I'm not 100% certain on)... And for its day it enjoyed an unusually long stay in the Top 40... This song was absolutely EVERYWHERE in summer 1996 - yet, to my astonishment, I've only just found out today that the song peaked at (a relatively low, given its massive exposure) #14 in the charts 😲 😮 ! I was certain it must have gone at least Top 5! The follow-up single, the re-released Neighbourhood, went three places higher at #11 later in the year, but didn't get half as much exposure as this song!

    Still sounds fresh. Still a great beat. Love the uplifting feeling it gives. Everything is just a bit off kilter but that's part of its charm. Made my MP3 playlist on my recent trip to Bali after being reminded how much I like it by hearing it on some Tv show a few months ago (can't remember what it was).
