  • How I develop film in my Tiny Tokyo Apartment
This is a video that I have had a lot of requests to make, but have been fairly reluctant to until recently. I have been developing film for any about a year and half and I am by no means an expert at it, nor do I claim to be. Film development is a complex and deep subject to learn, with many techniques and variables that can effect how your film comes out and there are many great resources online for a deeper dive into developing tips and techniques.
I have taught myself this technique through my own research online, talking with people, trial and error and just getting my hands dirty and doing it. This is not the only way to develop nor am I suggesting it is the best way, it is just the way that I have been doing it and I wanted to share it with my community.
Getting started with home developing can seem like a daunting task at first, however I wanted to show how easy it is, even when space is limited. If there are people out there thinking about trying it out but are unsure, I only hope this video gives you some idea on how to do it, and show you that it's not as scary as you might imagine. If you are considering trying it out, I will link some other videos below that you should look into for more tips and ideas from much more experienced photographers than myself.
Finally I would recommend using gloves at first as the chemicals can irritate the skin, however once you are comfortable doing it, you may feel they are not necessary any more. Also be sure to clean down your work area before and after developing, especially if it is a bathroom or kitchen sink as the chemicals are toxic.

Thanks for the informative video! Nice photos too. I have been wanting to get back into developing film at home, but read that in Japan it was prohibited to dump the chemicals down the sink. Do you have any recommendations on chemical disposal?

UNITED! UNITED! Top video Jonny. I need to take more photos as I want to develop my own. I suppose it's just for the process and satisfaction. Are you ever going to get into printing your own?

Nice one for checking the video mate. I would love to print as well but it’s just not possible in my current apartment. Hoping to do it in the future if I get the opportunity though

Our options are poorly limited out here. I suggest bringing some Chems back with you from your trip. You can stick them in your checked bag

Interesting stufff, always wondered if you developed your own film. Not sure about that dodgy shirt you’re wearing though.
