- Tokina atx-m 56mm for Fujifilm. First look and thoughts (from a street photographers perspective) with plenty of photo examples
For this video I am excited to share my thoughts on the brand new Tokina atx-m 56mm F1.4 x lens for Fuji X-Mount systems. I managed to get hold of the lens prior to its release and took it out to the streets to put it through its paces and see how it performs.
The bulk of this video focuses around real world use for street photography with plenty of examples, and I will be doing a video focusing on the video specs at later date.
I have linked the Tokina website below should you want all the technical information on the lenses.

All the images and video were shot on the Fuji XT-3 at various locations around Tokyo
Tokina kindly gave me the lenses to test out, however all opinions are my own and I was not paid anything to make this video.

Excellent video 😊!
This was great, Jonny! Some really gorgeous images here!
Thanks for your Tokina 56mm f1.4 X-mount video review. I have a little bit comparison study for 3rd party 56mm focal length for Fuji, and I feel Tokina is the best amongst them
Another great video man, big up!
Big ups G
I wanted to buy the sigma 56 mm 1.4, but the lack of the aperture ring made me look for something else with the same focal length. The Tokina seems to be a good performer with a good AF and sharp on wide open.Thank you so much for this great video!
Satisfying street shots 🔥
That’s the beauty of street photography. All these moments happening at once. Once they are gone, they are gone so you gotta take the first shot you see. Go with your eye. I liked your video and subscribed to your channel!
Thank you
Very informative vid, nice shots. Retailers selling the lens are still scarce atm in EU, however just ordered one from amazon. As a starting photographer, the Fuji 56 1.2 is priced too steep, even 2nd hand. Looking fwd to it!
Nice work mate, seems like a good option at that focal length for the X-system. On a side note, I stayed in that hotel at 9:14 when I was there haha, good memories
You stayed right in the thick of it. It’s absolutely bonkers round there during the night time
Great video mate. Greetings from Blackburn.
Thanks very much mate
Excellent and informative video. If l didn't already have the Fuji f2 50mm, l would seriously consider this Tokina. It's rare for these types of video to include really good photos to accompany them. Your photos are worth looking at, especially the night shots. Yes, l have subscribed! One point though.....do you need to be so close to the screen? I rolled my chair a few paces back when you first appeared and reached for a mask. Social distancing, eh?
Looks like a good alternative to the 56 1.2... enjoyed the vid!!
It’s certainly a cheaper alternative, the 56mm is an incredible lens though but that comes with the price. I personally feel the 56mm takes the sin on how it renders the image plus the bokeh is fantastic, however for over half the price the Tokina does a bloody good job and I was really happy with the results
do you shoot full manual or a prio during your street sessions? great video, loved the pacing
Thanks for watching. I shoot both really. Sometimes when I’m shooting street I will set my shutter speed and aperture but set the iso to auto, then just use the exposure compensation dial to adjust the settings
Great look at the lens! I miss Japan, spent 3 weeks there a few years ago and really can't wait to go back. How did you go about reaching out to Tokina for a review sample? Interesting to see a short telephoto in a street photography setting.
I just messaged them on twitter I think when they released the first lenses for fuji and it turns out their offices are not far from me so thankfully they agreed to let me play with them. after the first video they liked what I did so were receptive to me doing another.
@@Visions_in_Toyko awesome. I'm glad it worked out.
How about ttartisan 50mm f1.2 compares tokina 56mm? i think images by these lenses are really nice even when comparing to the native fuji lenses.
what program/s do you do your edits on?
Very interesting that no one compared Tokina to Viltrox lenses.
I still wonder what is the difference with the Viltrox version that justifies the difference in price. Maybe the coatings?
Here are some explanations:

@@SvenPries thank you!
I need to get my hands on the viltrox really for comparison. I have the 85mm viltrox and it is a great lens, however I have been very happy with the Tokina lenses. They are not perfect (no lens is really though) but I think that they can hold their own and are maybe a good option
@@Visions_in_Toyko I have the 23 and the 33 viltrox lenses and I am really happy with them. I had an issue with the 23mm and Viltrox replaced it at no cost after verifying that it was a lens fault. So far so good.
hows the af??? i mean is it silent or is it noisy... viltrox seems too b kinda noisy
Hi,have this lens eyes tracking?
no i dont use eye tracking when shooting street photography, I was just using standard auto focus
Heard these are rebranded viltrox
The 85mm equivalent isn't really a "street" photography lens. Your images showed that as most ended up as portraits. It's really a portrait lens, and I use the Fuji 56mm f/1.2 and the Fuji 90mm f/2.0 (135mm equivalent) in the street. But my practice is almost entirely candid portraiture rather than traditional "street." A fast 85mm lens by definition will be big and heavy, the Canon 85mm f/1.2, for instance, is a beast. That can make AF a challenge as there is a lot of heavy glass to move around. My Fuji 56mm is not the fastest lens for AF, but it's usually adequate. I do tend to manual focus a lot of the time though. My Fuji 56mm is optically stellar, and I love what it gives me. Good that Viltrox and Tokina are providing some financial relief in this range. The Fuji 56mm opens a vein at $1000 (and $1500 for the APD version!). Thanks for the show.
Yes it’s not what is considered a common street photography lens as most people tend to gravitate towards the 24-50mm focal range. That said Saul Lieter who is arguable considered as one of the street photography greats would often use an 85mm even up to 105mm and beyond for street. I guess the point is that it really doesn’t matter what tool you use as each will provide a different way of viewing and capturing the world. There are things you can do with a telephoto lens that are simply impossible to achieve with a wider field of view and vice versa. Ultimately it’s about enjoying yourself and finding new ways of seeing and capturing the world around us.
looks like my viltrox 56 1.4......, seems to be an original copy of the chinese Viltrox lens
