I'm going through dozens of different Fuji lens reviews these days to get a grip of the Fuji ecosystem and just want to say your review of these lenses was one of the best. The way you present information and provide samples is pretty much top notch.
I would choose the 50 f/2. Great little thing. Sharp, small, WR and I always prefer lenses with better magnification. They give the option of more interesting shots.
This is the most concise and comprehensive review of these lenses that I have come across! Thank you for taking the time to make this video, really appreciate your thoroughness covering both photo and video aspects!
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Is there any chance that you could do a Z6ii AF comparison--using the latest firmware--against its competitors? (Sony, Canon, Fuji) I know that would be a lot of work, but if you did an AF comparison only that users of all four brands would watch the video. It could be an R6/Z6ii/A7iii/X-T4 shoot out with percentage hit rates under different lighting conditions. Thanks!
Watched this before, but skipped through most of it and went to the conclusion. This time I watched the whole thing from front to back and was very impressed at the thoroughness of this review. Honestly, probably the best review I’ve seen comparing these lenses, especially all four. I own the 56mm and was curious how the new 50 mm F 1.0 compared. Each lens obviously has strengths and weaknesses, but after watching this I’m happy sticking with my 56 mm, and for the price of the 50 mm F 1.0 I also have the 90 mm F2, and the 56 and the 90 together we only 100 g more than just the 50 mm F 1.0. To put in another way, the 50 mm F 1.0 actually weighs more than the 16 to 55 mm F2.8 and a 35 mm F1.4 combined. Thanks again!
I have the feeling that the Viltrox prime lineup for Fuji cameras really is a big benefit for Fuji cameras. they have equivalents to current Fuji lenses (23 1.4, 33 1.4, 56 1.4 and 85 1.8), and even have lenses where Fuji hasn't stepped on the segment yet (13 1.4), all for a pretty affordable price and awesome value, especially for the 85 1.8 as it is really close to the fuji 90 f2 at less than half the price. The latest 1.4 lenses coming from Fuji (18 1.4, 23 1.4 and 33 1.4) really are works of art when it comes to opticas and all of those lenses are basically perfect, so it really depends if you're OK to spend more for more sharpness and less optical quirks. Overall though, the Viltrox lenses are an amazing value
Thanks for the great comparison! The 56 1.2 is by far my favourite, but the Viltrox is the only one I can afford hahaha. The Viltrox has improved substantially with a few firmware updates, too.
I agree with you but and I also have the 56 1.2. However that Viltrox really held its own on the real world shots. I did notice that the bokeh got a little nervous looking on the shots that had a busy background to begin with. Both the Viltrox and the Tiny 50 had that same issue. In particular it was the shots of the person with the trees in the background (around 13:09) that exhibited this.
the 50mm f2 its a wonderful lens. with great resolution, good optic, beautiful contrast, and colors, and feels amazing in my hand, and perfect for video use. IMO the best native lens for B&W shoots!
I have both the Fuji 56 and the 50mmf2 and you are correct, the B&W images from the 50mm are stellar. And I'm glad I got the 56mm instead of the 50f1, that extra 3/4 of a stop or so isn't that significant in terms of bokeh and the lens is a lot more expensive and heavier than the 56.
Wow, I've watched A LOT of comparison videos for A LOT of different stuff. This is without a doubt one of the best, if not THE best! Straight to the important points, no time wasted, and lots of effort went into this. Great job! THANK YOU!
The difference of subject isolation between both 50mm at f2 is due to the mechanical vignette ( cat's eye) of the "Tiny" at this aperture. The "big" being stopped down at f2 is free of this phenomenon. Mechanical vignette increases the depth of field where it is present.
I bought the viltrox 56mm 1.4 second hand for £225. From my test shots it's absolutely tack sharp at 1.4 and certainly sharp enough for my needs especially at the price point I paid for the lens. Great review as always.
Just looking at the size 'n weight in comparison, the tiny 50f2WR is in my bag. I own one. love it! Video Interviews and portraits just let clients smile.
This is the best and most helpful comparison of the Fuji 50-ish mm lens lineup I’ve seen. Probably seen over a dozen videos attempting to be as helpful as yours but failing
Generally speaking men with beards can't be trusted but this is certainly the best lens review I've ever seen. Great context in terms of what you are reviewing and an utterly fantastic edit. Brilliant stuff - well done - subscribed!!
What an excellent review and an amazing presentation!! I learned so much in this one video, and more importantly, how to go about deciding on any lens purchases from here on out. I look forward to watching your other videos. Keep up the great work and thanks for saving the rest of us lots of time and money to figure out what the best choice would be given our individual shooting styles and requirements. I would love to see similar tests again at lower lighting environments!! Subscribed!!
Great review! I had the 56 f1.2 but changed it for the 50 f2 for the smaller size. No regrets. Waiting for the Sigma 56 f1.4 on the x-mount in 2021 if rumors are correct.
I have the 50mm F1 on test right now from Fuji and I thought it was pointless, but I must admit, I haven't enjoyed running and gunning as much with a lens in years. I think it's wonderful!
I dont normally post comments on videos but this was one if the best lens comparison videos I have watched. The information is clean, organized, unbiased and to the point. Well done! Now the only problem is that sigma is releasing a 56 1.4 for Fuji so a new test is in order?
Wow! I'm amazed with this video comparison. Pls carry on with your amazing job and bring us more of this amazing and conscious comparisons. Thumbs up!!!
I bought the Fuji-System because of its size and weight. Shallow depth of field and nice bokeh can be acieved with a much more affordable full-frame-system. But still the best comparison of the 50ies here on RUclips!!!!!! Trés bien!!!!!! I´ll keep the 2.0 for fun and for serious portraits Nikon D750 with 85mm f 1.8 (costs less than Fuji f 1.0)
Great review and comparison 👍 your articles and reviews are the best. fire extinguisher in the kitchen, very wise 😁 I like the bag the lady carrying. Cheers
Another consideration for some might be the KamLan 50mm F1.1 II. It is a manual lens, but has very good travel for the focus ring, and can be very precise when paired with focus peaking. For still portraits it is fine as well as other artistic shots. Lovely color and contrast.
Excellent comparison Mathieu, and let me say you that I like your communication style. Good job guy. By the way, I've bought the Viltrox 56 mm F 1.4 and this review confirm that this lens is not bad, especially compared to its price tag. The other contender was the "Tiny Fifty" but at the end a "too good deal to pass up" has won against the indecision 😃. For the record, you have gained a new subscriber.
As always, Matt, excellent work...thanks. A note: Zeiss tout 50mm f2.8 is another third party autofocus lens that has been around since 2014. Even though it is slower at f2.8, it is super sharp wide open and and the rendering is delicious, making a very nice portrait option with the added bonus of 1:1 macro capabilities (oops, I see you already made mention of the Zeiss lenses).
Salut Mathieu, je connaissais pas ta chaine (mais ton site oui). Vu la qualité de la vidéo et le travail fourni, je m'abonne direct. I have the same issue as you mention at ~20:40 with my x-t4, i created several posts different reddit forums to ask if anybody else had the same issue with no one confirming it. I can confirm that this happens for me too and lets hope that fuji fix this in the next x-t4 firmware update. (This happens with all of my lenses but the 56 is the only one which actually changes the focus distance)
It would be great to see the AF performance test repeated using the new X-H2S. Would the new camera mean that all of these lenses have a high hit rate now when shooting a moving subject in low light? Thanks!
I’m glad you mentioned the timer/manual focus bug where the focus jumps even in manual mode after the timer counts down. I thought it was just me. That is super annoying. Did they fix it yet?
Price range 300eur Viltrox 56mm better for portraits then xc35, because much shallower depth of field, background blur (6,7% vs 2,5%) and perspective. For range 500 eur, it depends on what you prefer, longer focal, fast af and wr of 50f2 vs more universal focal and lower aperure of xf35f1.4 strictly for portraits i would go with 50f2 because of the more flattering focal. Still Viltrox can be considered here even with the lower price.
Wow this was really informative and a great in-depth review. Also thanks so much for mentioning this 19:06 I would have gone and bought Viltrox otherwise you saved me there.
Yep Zeiss has those lenses out for at least 5 years. But for some reason nobody talks about them. Have the 56/1,2 for years and I adore it, all do it frustrates me sometimes, first of all due the lack of WR, secondly its old AF motor tends to freeze in sub zero temperatures so no shooting in the snow for prolonged period of time. 50/1,0 is great but a bit too big / bulky / heavy / pricey for what I do. Viltrox I could consider as a backup but not really. And 50/2.0 is great great for carry around and stealthy work. If you can justify its price which is not so high, what's quite easy if you don't have a ton of vintage 50mm lenses. What I unfortunately do have. Damn...
The funny thing is that I reviewed the Zeiss lenses in the past, but I completely forgot about them while making the video. Maybe it's because they haven't expanded their line-up for so long (or simply put, they have abandoned the project).
It can do both to be honest, as long as you can get close enough for sports, and you have enough space for portraits (an indoor portrait shoot for example can be a bit limiting if the location is small and you want something larger than a headshot).
I have the same issues with focus changing when only using shutterbutton for shutter and backbuttonfocus for focus. Halfpress shutterbutton makes exactly the same focuschange I see in your review. No matter if Im in M, S or C. Happens with to X-t4-bodies and with 56mm 1,2, 16mm 1,4 and new 50mm. Have missed som shots because of this. So irritating.
Correction: there are also three AF lenses from Zeiss (Touit 2.8/12, 1.8/32 and 2.8/50 Macro).
I'm going through dozens of different Fuji lens reviews these days to get a grip of the Fuji ecosystem and just want to say your review of these lenses was one of the best. The way you present information and provide samples is pretty much top notch.

The tiny 50/2 and the 56/1.2 still seem to offer the best value/performance ratio.
This is the best comparison review that I've ever seen. It must have been a lot of work, and I really appreciate that.
Glad you enjoyed it!

I have the feeling that the Viltrox prime lineup for Fuji cameras really is a big benefit for Fuji cameras.

the most technical review on youtube!
Excellent comparison... viltrox seems to be good option in this price range...
Phenomenal video Mathieu, amazing work! Subbed! :)
The best review I've seen for 50/56 mm lenses for Fuji. Thanks a lot!
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for the great comparison! The 56 1.2 is by far my favourite, but the Viltrox is the only one I can afford hahaha. The Viltrox has improved substantially with a few firmware updates, too.
This is a super comparison! You cleared my doubts about the viltrox vs the tiny 50, thank you!
Excellent review matthieu. I have the 56 1.2. Personally, i don't see myself changing to any of the other 3.
I agree with you but and I also have the 56 1.2. However that Viltrox really held its own on the real world shots. Been looking for a portrait length primer to add to my 23 f/2 on my x Pro 2. This video sold me on the 50 f/2. Thanks for the solid comparison!
the 50mm f2 its a wonderful lens.

Tiny 50 looks great for Environmental Portraits. Great analysis and review BTW 👍🏽

The Sigma 56mm is an excellent lens, I hope they will make a Fuji version soon!

Top drawer video this, subscribed! I was going to get the Viltrox but not now, I'll go with the Sigma i think.

You're right! It's a shame though that they haven't produced anything more since.

Thanks! Yes, I'm happy Sigma is starting to make lenses for Fuji. I tested the 56mm E-mount version and it's a very good lens.
Great review. For bokeh the 56 and big 50 are only choices.
Great comparison... Goes into excellent depth, but with real world examples too. Thanks for sharing

IMHO adding xf90 f2 to the comparison would make the video more complete..
Merci beaucoup pour cette excellente vidéo et le travail accompli !!
best review of these lenses. thank you. I'll be happy with my Viltrox, which i ordered already before coming across this review. now looking forward
Great! Let me know how do you find the lens.
Super analysis. Great job very informative and easy to understand.
Precise and very well made review. Thank you!
Best review on those lenses so far. Great job.
Thanks!
Excellent review of the four lenses, Mathieu!
Thank you.
Mathieu Could you make a benchmark between Fuji 16-80, Fuji 18-55, Fuji 16-55, Fuji 18-135 and Tamron 17-70?
Best video on the topic, well done buddy!
Il is somehow disappointing to see, that the 50/1.0 does not really stand out optically against the 56/1.2. Thank you very much for the comparison.

Thanks for sharing. I didn't try that lens but it sounds interesting.
Thank you for this great Review! Really helped me see the differences.
Your videos are simply the best. Keep going and thanks for your time.
Damn you’re in the same league with Gerald Undone with how detailed you are!!
Haha, thank you!
f2 is a way to go for me. own 23,35,50 F2.. F2 series is awsome. cant go wrong..
Exactly 👍
Amazing comparison! The most useful that I've found
Thank you!
Excellent review. Very detailed allowing you to chose the right lens for your application and budget.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome review! Just what I had been looking for. Well done
Thank you! Glad you like the Viltrox. I'm tempted to try the other ones they have too (23mm and 33mm).
As always, Matt, excellent work...thanks.
A note: Zeiss tout 50mm f2.8 is another third party autofocus lens that has been around since 2014. Thank you. Yes I forgot about the Touit lenses, which is silly because I reviewed them all.
Really great review!!
Thank you so much for that!
Great comparison. Thank you, Mathieu.
excellent work. would it be possible to add the zoom lens into the comparison?
I don't have the 50 f1 and 56 1.2 with me anymore. Which zoom lens you were thinking?
Very detail review thanks for your information 🙏🏻
Great video! Very well done! Looking forward to more videos!

Merci beaucoup Christophe!
Very nice work, wonder what the Sigma 56 would be like compared to those
this is super useful review thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
Great and really professional review!
Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad I'm not alone! Let's hope in a firmware fix.
One thing to note is Viltrox updated the lens firmware significantly since this video, could you do a follow up video with firmware version 1.1.0?
It would be great to see the AF performance test repeated using the new X-H2S. Would the new camera mean that all of these lenses have a high hit rate now when shooting a moving subject in low light? Thanks!
I’m glad you mentioned the timer/manual focus bug where the focus jumps even in manual mode after the timer counts down. I thought it was just me. That is super annoying. Did they fix it yet?
I’ve encountered this with the X100V btw.
As far as I know, it hasn't been fixed yet.
Very good and useful video! Thank you!
Thanks for review.
which single lens for taking potraits would you recommend on budget
fuji 35 f1.4/xc f2 or 50 f2. any other viltrox lens
35mm 1.4
Price range 300eur Viltrox 56mm better for portraits then xc35, because much shallower depth of field, background blur (6,7% vs 2,5%) and perspective.

very helpful review, I wish you do it with the Sigma 56.
The Fuji 50/1.0 lens is not the first F/1.0 autofocus lens. The Canon EF 50/1.0 was (later replaced by the 1.2 version).
Thanks. It is for mirrorless cameras, I forgot to specify that.
Great video. Would you consider the 90mm f2 as a portrait lens, or sports?
It can do both to be honest, as long as you can get close enough for sports, and you have enough space for portraits (an indoor portrait shoot for example can be a bit limiting if the location is small and you want something larger than a headshot).
Excellent review! Thank you!
Great video for me thank you so much for your effort.
Thank you for the feedback!
This was fantastic! Super helpful
Excellent comparison. Thanks
A very good comparison and a well needed one. Thank you. I bought Fuji 56 1.2 in 2021 after watching this video comparison
Glad it was helpful!
Welcome back ! The 50 f2 - sweet, cheap and almost silent AF. A gem .....
but horrible bokeh that you'll see in every picture at portrait distances unfortunately.
thanks for all the great work!
