I don't know of a better drummer in jazz than Brian Blade. And this is not only about the perfection of every smallest detail in his music, but also about his shining inner state during performance, which he so brilliantly conveys to every listener.
Fortunate to have seen Brian in a variety of settings over the years. And he's always remarkable. Empathetic. Subtle. Soulful. Concerts with The Fellowship Band, a trio with Daniel Lanois & Daryl Jones and a trio with Bill Frisell and Sam Yahel are particularly memorable.
Brian is the only drummer who can get other musicians to keep time during a solo. He can do whatever he wants, and it works. His silence commands time as much as his playing. I can only aspire to this level... one day! :)
I saw Brian Blade with Wayne Shorter a few years ago in Oslo Konserthus, and his drum playing was just amazing. Brian Blade`s performance had everything, like elegance, beauty, power, dynamics and a lot of humour.
I can’t believe how he picks up on rhythmic patterns of the soloist and echoes them back. And all the fluttering during the long sustained notes. He really, really is an amazing all around musician.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Amid all the video clips of endless people with Olympian chops flailing around in various 'fusion music' settings, some lovely, swinging uncompromised, contemporary improvisation. Brian Blade's playing is exquisite...
Indeed. Another master who is known for playing intensely at pianissimo is Clarence Penn. Check him out. I asked Clarence about that once and he said "what's the secret to playing with intensity at pianissimo?" I replied with three or four guesses and which wasn't what he was looking for. So I said "so what's the secret?" He said "Practicing playing with intensity at pianissimo." :)
Man, I saw him for the first time way back in '99 with Seal. A fantastic band with Landau on guitar, Sancious on Keys and Levin on bass. I hadn't heard him but I had been reading about him. I just thought he was a "jazz" drummer but he led that band phenomenally. So much intensity.......with a jazz kit 😂
It's always a pleasure to see Brian Blade on the drums! He has so much passion! From Straight Ahead Jazz to Adult Contemporary; he's extremely versatile. The first time I saw Brian perform, it was with Pat Metheny (from the PMG), and Kenny Garrett's group. And then later I saw him with his own group (Fellowship). Since then I've been hooked! After listening to this piece, Jeff Denson is my newest and favorite bass players, along with Romain Pilon being one of my favorite guitarists! Excellent trio! Thanks for uploading this wonderful video! Yeah Boi! \ ( ^ _ ^ ) /

I agree with you man! He makes this fine group of musicians awesome. God bless you my friend!
This man knows the tonal possibilities of every inch of that drumset and knows how to use them. Just amazing
I could listen to a whole album of just Blade playing...anyone else? Probably the most lyrical, sensitive drummer alive.
I love the way Brian Blade smiles when he plays, like a kid a kid in a toy shop. Reminds me why I play.
When you look up "drummer" in the dictionary, you should see a picture of Brain Blade. He is everything you should want and need in a drummer.
Steven R Lovely 😊 Brain Blade for Brian is exactly what it is all about ! A witty and so smart drummer !
@@emmanuelgauthier2470 I'm pretty sure he just made a typo lol
Bill Stewart too.
@@josteinv.jordet257 but the drummer is a musician
Blade flows like water, damn.
"Blade flows like water."
There, I fixed it for you. No "dam" can hold back Blade's flow! ;)
GUIM I see what you did there, lol
Best drummer in the world, Elvin, Tony, then came Brian.
Every Brian Blade video is a gold mine.
One of the musical drummers I've heard......EVER!!! And so creative too

Blessed anointed band. God richly bless you fine musicians

And a lot of Art and heart
@@davidepentassuglia9234 Absolutely!
Name dropah 😂
Love Brian's playing. So rich. So good for the music.
Awesome distinguished drummer! Don’t lose him!! God bless.
Saw Blade in the nineties with Josh Redman. Never heard any drummer since that "spoke to me" more than he did and does to this day.
The best drummer ever!!! I know I know that doesn't exist but I don't care!!!!
You must be a young daddy....
🤣🥁
You're favorite drummers favorite drummer
It's Blade. Your statement is understandable, if not a 'fact'.
Romain Pilon is a great creative French guitarist now on the international scene ! Check him out guys !
I love this, this is old school!
That bass solo was so intense!!!!
Thanks, Matt!
@@JeffDenson no problem, your playing is so great man, so expressive and clear. your walking is so good too!
Brian is an incredible "light" and elegant drummer
Exactly, but never sacrificing power when it's called for.
I just love seeing drummers having fun. This instrument has been kicking my ass
When I watch other drummers, I watch good drummers. That's all. When I watch Blade it's different. I'm listening to a percussive decorator.
I can’t believe how he picks up on rhythmic patterns of the soloist and echoes them back. And all the fluttering during the long sustained notes. He really, really is an amazing all around musician.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Really grabs you, and I’m a guitar freak
@Myke Mynah yes man!
also, would love to hear something like this, but, placed as the outtro...
Brian Blade...just wow.
Unbelievable touch and feel. Blade always floors me

Well said. This is just great music
Bravo! So musical. This is sorely missing in jazz - a guitar trio. This one has the makings of a great trio.
Thank you, Longhaul Blue!
Brian Blade es increíble!
Dang great guitarist too!
Romain Pilon soundin' great !
The most intense quiet drummer?!
Up there with Spaven and Guiliana for sure!
Yep, and then out of the blue he just explodes on the cymbals and hollers. Super fun to watch live.
Yes, absolutely:) His touch and tone sound just as amazing at any and all volume
