Why A Christmas Carol (2009) Is My Favourite Adaptation

One of my favourite Christmas movies, it's nice to see someone giving it the praise that it deserves.
To be honest, the animation was a bit ahead of it’s time, which is why some parts don’t hold up. However, the more normative aspects (Scrooge, for instance) still hold up quite well.
As for the adaptation, in general, I really like it because it remains true to the core message of the book. More importantly, _it does not hold back._ It confronts the reality of death in an up-front, personal manner. The film opening up with the beginning of the book, showing Marley’s Corpse lying within his coffin, rams home the tangibility of death. More importantly, we get a far better introduction to the sheer level of greed Ebenezer Scrooge truly embodies when we see him take the coins off of his deceased friend’s eyelids (a massive taboo as leaving a coin is a show of respect for the dead man’s soul).
More importantly, that opening provides context to why the ghost of Marley comes to haunt Scrooge in the first place and why the ghost of Marley looks like he does. It’s the last memory Scrooge has of his friend; the face of a dead man with his jaw bound with a strip of cloth.
Scrooge’s mortality - and him realizing this undeniable fact - is one of the key points behind _why_ he finally renounces his greed and finds joy in his life. This is a point made throughout the book, which I’m happy to see translated well into this adaptation.
My favorite scene is the one with Ignorance and Want...for most people life in Victorian times was hard, brutal, and tragic.

A gloomy, melancholic and dark toned Christmas is called Dickensian for a reason. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was not a happy, jolly and merry story before the end.
The joyful scene at Fezziwig's was before the end. The joyful scene at the Cratchits' was before the end. The joyful scene at Fred's house was before the end.
Disney's "A Christmas carol" and "Polar Express" are so underrated! Robert Zemeckis with his whole team left the best christmas movies. Animation like this to me just amazing.
This is also my favorite. Jim Carrey's Scrooge is feel is the best version of him anywhere in film!
This version definitely works. The Cg is excellent and a big improvement over Polar Express. Although that is also now a modern Christmas classic. It captures the atmosphere of Victorian London at Christmas really well.

My favourite is the 1997 cartoon.
This is not a bad adaptation, but it's not my favorite. (That would be the 1984 version with George C. Scott). It is definitely better than the Guy Pearse version.
Stephen King is a "crybaby" about Kubrick's The SHiNiNG? He says he doesn't like the film whenever people ask him for his thoughts on it.
I mean he made a shining mini series "his way" to spite kubrick and it turned out horrible cause he didnt realise books and films arent the same thing haha

I’m not saying wrong, as opinions are opinions, but I think what NC and others were saying is that the detail like the wrinkles on the face is what made it uncanny.

I don´t think the animation is the problem, it is gloomy and dark because of the choice of pictures. There is, for instance, no reason whatsoever to dwell on the death of christmas present in such a horrible way, since that´s not an important part of the story. Much more important would have been to dwell on the bit-by-bit-change in the soul of Scrooge, and that most important part of the story is completely ignored in that adaptation. Turns the christmas classik into a mindless horrormovie. Sorry, but THAT is, the reason, why that movie adaptation flopped. Watched it once, have no desire to ever see it again!
