I'd highly recommend Grant's book on the history of superheroes, Supergods. It really crystallised some of his thinking, and after reading it, Flex Mentallo finally clicked for me on the third try.
Since they uploaded this video twice. They should mess with the coloring of this video and make it browner like in the recolored edition of Flex.
What's great about Flex is the more you read it the more the layers peel for you. Wally decides he's a shaman with the cross word at the end, and literally explodes his ideas into the world to bring the heroes in. I feel like that portion where the hero is walking young Wally through their world, it's Wally's brain. They've fixed themselves to his subconscious and him talking about the heroes is bringing them into existence. Flex is only real because Wally Sage dreamed him into existence, they're both on the same path trying to save the world. Flex is saving us, Wally is saving himself through superheroes. It's just great, and let's not act like The Hoaxer talking to the Man on the Moon isn't Grant shitting on Alan Moore. "Only a bitter adolescent boy could confuse pessimism with realism." It's all just so great
I think, with the release of the superheroes from the dog star Sirius, Morrison is also commenting on the need to release superheroes from the prison of "serious" -- leave Dark Knight and Watchmen behind, and return to the freedom and fun of the silver age, which Morrison obviously loves (see All-Star Superman and plenty of others)
I like that "serious"/Sirius connection. One of the fun parts of this story for me is how open it is to the reader's interpretation. I'll always see it as "serious" now. It definitely makes sense with the rest of the story. - Jim
The old African American man on the stretcher in issue one is holding the torn insignia of the African American sidekick in that group shot a few pages later -- must be the elderly version of that young "brat packer," right?
I've only read the deluxe version, and the recolouring is breaking my heart. It's not only the aesthetic that is hurt, but the actual storytelling.

Cool video gentlemen, really enjoy your perspectives. If you check out the Grant Morrison documentary 'Talking With Gods' you'll see loads of the sequences in Flex Mentallo are directly auto-biographical. The green light in the hospital and Wally Sage parents being counter culture are a couple examples.

You have to listen to the Shot x Shot podcast, they interview Frank Quitely and he talks being brave enough to publish one of his sketches in a story.
Classic. My first Quitely! I was like 15 when I first read it and it blew my damn mind lmao

I have read and re-read and re-read Grant Morrison's THE FILTH series and it also has a deep, hard to follow, complex, fuckedup, colorful plot and cast of characters and... its just so much and yet so maligned and misunderstood... I now need to find these 4 FLEX comics... seriously... in my all-time favorite comics list IS The Filth. I will go back and re-read it because it so goes beyond normal comics. (Also, Morrison's MULTIVERSITY series was totally worth multiple reads)
27:17 -- the green light to red light detail mentioned here is a direct reference to Morrison's THE INVISIBLES.
So glad you point out the recolouring in the Deluxe collection, I remember being so disappointed when I got hold of a copy and saw how grey and drab it looked.
The DeLuca effect might be the author seeing tracers from hallucinating.

the sage/wood thing is interesting, but I'd say it's probably more related to being a wise or learned person, or perhaps...a shaman?
Love Morrison and Quitely together. My favourite creative team. This comic makes no fucking sense to me whatsoever.

I think the desaturation comes from how Quitely has been consistently painted over since the digital age begun... the colors do look better in the old one.
Quitely and Morrison spearheaded the recoloring.

Flex Mentallo, hmmm. Honestly, Flex's origin story in Doom Patrol #42 is his most entertaining story, whereas in this spin-off mini, Morrison gets a bit too meta and serious. The art though is phenomenal. One of Quitely's smaller panels in this story shows a kid paddling in a huge bird's nest in a storm, and it isn't even a big moment in the story or anything, but it burned into my brain just how cosmically fluid Quitely's unique vision is.
A lot of the character perspectives and street details are reminiscent of Geof Darrow

I read flex on LSD last summer. I would highly recommend it
1996... a year before Morrison went to do JLA.
Regarding your comment how this series won't work minus Frank Quitely, I am just right now reading Grant's Doom Patrol and--not saying this as a dis to Richard Case--I am not as hooked as I was with Flex Mentallo, even if I knew I was reading the same level of weirdness. And I thought, if I was reading the series with Franks Quitely's art, or an artist who can do the same kind of details and nuances during that time, I may I would have been more engaged with it.
