Tom dropping another knowledge bomb thats pretty universal to most works I love. (Paraphrased): "[If you are enjoying an artists work], the essence is spending time with that person, as a person. The plot, the art doesn’t matter, the story doesn’t matter. You just remember the essence. That tremor [in Schultz' line quality] is a little bit of spending time with Charles Schultz and experiencing his soul."
I’ve probably added another twenty comics to my list of things to seek out when I’m next at my local shops. Thanks so much! I’d love to see a Mad 1-24 cover episode as well as an ACME Novelty Library cover episode.
Find the Dietch's Mishkin saga in the book, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and also in issues called Waldo World and the Mishkin File. All of Dietch's work is worth reading. They all connect. He has truly created a world and a cosmology.
One-tenth of the entire Top 50 is just Love and Rockets. Seem like that could have been condensed down when other Anthologies or Magazines only get one entry in the list. #13 - Wigwam Bam #14 - Blood of Palomar #22 - The Death of Speedy Ortíz #24 - Flies on the Ceiling #31 - Poison River Other people are also on the list multiple times, but for different works. Harvey Kurtzman 5 times (Mad Comics, The War Comics, The Jungle Book, Hey Look!, and Goodman Beaver, Alan Moore 4 times (From Hell, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, and "Pictopia"), Robert Crumb 3 times (Weirdo, The R Crumb Sketchbooks, and Zap Comix), and a few others twice.
Absolutely this is the biggest problem with the list. Putting Love and Rockets on there five times is ridiculous no matter how good it is. Dave Sim and Evan Dorkin should have spots in the top 100 imo
The stuff in the Dark Horse collections of Gasoline Alley, even though it’s early, is absolutely fantastic, and you do get a glimpse of the experimentation that defined the Sundays. It’s getting expensive trying to find a copy of these Sunday collections now. I hope Dark Horse eventually continues the series.
Congratulations! My local comic shop owner is shocked at how well Red Room is selling in his shop. He knew you had a following but he now wishes he had more Piskor content to sell.
All of these best of ones are here or there, what somebody thinks as important or what not. But it helps me remember comics that I could have forgotten.
I was joking with Hornschemeier about Thurber House being haunted, then I googled it. He seemed to survive it okay. I’m glad I collected the individual Cages issues when I did. I have those and the collected Tundra edition.
Such a great way for you to discuss a lot of different artists in one video. And thumbs up to the addition of Tom. Mostly I listen, podcast style, but when I do want to see a page that you are discussing and I don't have my own copy I am stymied by your out-of-focus camera. Please, tweak that if you are able.
This could be the picture quality of the RUclips video. The default is usually set to 480 for me, which makes the writing on these pages illegible. But when I go into the settings and turn it up to 1080, everything is crisp and legible. Hope this helps!

I think about this quote often til this day.

Love to hear Ed share the Chester Gould love. One of my all-time favorites, and I could read (and re-read) Tracy for years
Thief and The Cobbler unfinished cut is pretty incredible, really wish they’d get funding to complete that somehow!

Congratulations. I enjoyed the commentary. All of you made terrific observations about these great creators..cheers
Definitely the top 3. 38 and above for the most part are really solid, especially Little Nemo, Scrooge, and Gasoline Alley!
Cerebus should have made the top ten...in stead it was blacklisted by the time this list was made
Congrats on RED ROOM numbers! I pre-ordered the first 4 issues directly from Fantagraphics, and look forward to more. Love these Top 100 episodes.
Thank you guys so much for such a fun passionate expression of the joy of comics. Highlight of my day
Snagging them variants and loved the FCBD issue, congrats Ed!

Pleasure to listen. Looking forward to the Cartoonist Kayfabe top 100!

As a medium, comics were lucky to have Tom Spurgeon.
could you guys do an interview with Tom Palmer Jr? I think that would be great!
Nina three is the ruffles of the pant leg?
I’m curious, why wasn’t Batman or Superman on the list
Calvin and Hobbes is too low!
As someone who had to help put a newspaper together for 20 years, the amount of work that would have gone into making this list explodes my mind.
