    I think the key to painting FDM terrain pieces is something you did in the video, but didn't mention.
    When you're drybrushing or overbrushing, just make sure your brush strokes are parallel to the layer lines. If you brush along them, you won't end up highlighting them too much (especially if you use a 'wetter' drybrush as you mention). You can also use traditional drybrushing to catch sharp edges (generally on buildings and man-made objects) if you do it very lightly and avoid going over flat areas where the layers might start catching the paint.
    I also like to use my airbrush as much as possible on FDM printed terrain, since the air propelled paint completely ignores layer lines and gives a really smooth appearance. If you use zenithal techniques with your airbrush you can achieve a lot of shading this way on most pieces, getting really smooth blends that take the eye off layer lines.
    I think the most important thing though, is to consider that terrain pieces are rarely viewed up close. They need to look good on a table and from any kind of distance, you can't really see layer lines. So despite all of what I've said above, I think the best advice is just not to worry about it too much!

    I love what you did with the trees :D I have all of Danny's kickstarters and will have to print up more trees to get that sweet blend :D

    What I like to use for the basecoat, like what is done with the brown in this video: Latex house paint sample pots. They're thicker than the Craft paint, and it really helps to fill in those layer lines. If you're concerned about detail, add in a little Flotrol for better movement and coverage. You can get the pots for $2-$3-$4, depending, at your big box hardware store. You can also get them at craft re-stores for pennies.

    • @CriticalCrafting
      @CriticalCrafting  3 года назад +3

      That is a great idea! I used to use some super thick latex house paint for BASING MINIS (I had no idea what i was doing) it would for SURE help hide some layer lines.

    I have been priming my prints with a thick Gesso and leaving it a bit thick to try and fill the gaps. Still noticeable, so I'll try this on top of that. Also cannot wait for fulfillment of the kickstarter. It went very well and looks great.

      Thanks for the kind words :) Gesso would be a great medium for filling in gaps, nice and thick

      I've been considering gesso. I've been trying a few things, like floor acrylic gloss, but first I need something thicker

    This sounds interesting. For 28mm minis what do you use to hide the layer lines ?

    • @CriticalCrafting
      @CriticalCrafting  2 месяца назад

      Its for sure more difficult but usually if you just paint really thick for your base layers you can hide em.

    I LOVE the tree trunk design! I would like to print and paint something like this! I presume this is a 3d print and if so could this be replicated in Blender? For example I am curious how you get the slender grooves into the trunk..? 🙂

      It’s a 3D print from the lost adventures volume 2 Kickstarter. While I did the art direction for the project I’m not sure how the artist did the grooves exactly

    What about mod podge or filler as the base layer?

  • @brianmusco5791
    @brianmusco5791 3 года назад

    Alright so the question, I am like 3 months into 3D FDM printing for tabletop, why is a 2 day print time bad if you have the time? Because I love the low layer height detail for terrain and safety over SLA (I don't have a lot of space for resin printing).

    • @CriticalCrafting
      @CriticalCrafting  3 года назад

      Yeah if you have the time GO FOR IT! The big thing people worry about is print failures after so much time printing

    • @ArcangelZero7
      @ArcangelZero7 2 года назад

      The thing I worry about is leaving a printer with heating elements running for that long. At some point I will have to leave the house. Will anybody else be there? Will they know how to handle an emergency? These machines are awesome but far from flawless. (By the way, check out the way Ender3/v2s tinned their power cables going into pinch-blocks! Huge fire hazards. You can snip the ends and crimp ferrules on them to fix this.)
      There's ways to monitor your print from over the internet or something, but mainly, even if something will take "all day", I need to be around for it. Not worth the risk IMHO.
      If you have the privilege of not needing to commute anywhere to fund your life? By all means have at it and just stick a fire-alarm and a webcam on it. Have fun hahaha.

  • @Chmouss
    @Chmouss 3 года назад

    hey ^^ quick question here ( I'm a newbie painter ) ! Why don't you prime the models ?
    I'm using a resin 3d printer so maybe the properties are different, but on almost every vid i see people priming the models and I don't get why exactly ^^' thank you !

    • @CriticalCrafting
      @CriticalCrafting  3 года назад +2

      Hey there, so here is the thing. Many people say that priming a model will 1. Help it take paint better and 2. Help it hold paint so it will not chip. Now I have been painting minis and terrain for 4ish years and I have never had an issue with something taking paint unless it was bought at a dollar store, and I haven't had any chipping either. SO while I am not an expert in the priming department, I have never really seen the purpose of priming myself.
