  • Isabella Gasparini and Christopher Saunders perform the Transformation Scene in The Royal Ballet's magical production of The Nutcracker. Book now: www.roh.org.uk/tickets-and-ev...
The Nutcracker has long been one of the most delightful ways to discover the enchantment of ballet and makes for a sparkling festive treat for the whole family. Tchaikovsky’s much-loved music is matched to a story of magic on Christmas Eve, and the journey of Clara and her Nutcracker to the Land of Sweets brings with it some of the most familiar of all ballet moments.
Peter Wright’s gorgeous production for The Royal Ballet keeps true to the spirit of this Russian ballet classic, and the many solo roles and ensembles show the world-class skills of the Company at its best.

I wish there was a kind of documentary that showed behind the scenes of how The Nutcracker is set up. From the first castings to creating the outfits, sets, and to the end performance. I know you guys have some clips of bts but not a full documentary.

I think the closest I know of is ‘on pointe’ which is about the ballet school they cast the child rolls from. It shows how they train for the performance

Wouldn't that rather spoil all the magic? Especially for someone going for the first time. It would be like a magician explaining in detail how all their tricks were done before a show.

I really enjoy watching the royal ballet. I’m a musician in New York City, and while there is plenty of talent here, I have been disappointed with the Nutcrackers. I’m thinking of the NYC Ballet Company, that monopolizes the nutcracker during the holidays. All I see on stage is strength and flexibility, with little elegance or characterful expression. Frankly, it’s boring.
So thanks for posting so many clips of the Royal Ballet! It’s a joy to see skill and acting and staging work in such harmony.

So Clara Stahlbaum is German, Marie Silberhaus, Mother Ginger, and her Polichinelles are French, Harlequin and Columbine are Circus Clowns, Pirlipat is English, Hot Chocolate is Spanish, Coffee is Arabian, Tea is Chinese, Peppermints are Russian, and Marzipan and her Mirlitons are Danish?

An adult playing a 12 year old is creepy sorry . New York City Ballet Nutcracker is much better and honors that this ballet is for and meant for children and casts appropriately.

It feels very wrong. Especially when I saw a video of Marianela Nuñez as Clara, an amazing artist but putting her as Clara is incomprehensible

Now a 12 year old married to a grown prince. Now that's creepy but having an adult play the child, well just requires a little imagination. Clara has to be transformed into the adult anyway once you get to Act II, so what is the big deal? kind of an over reaction to a casting choice.

It’s because of covid. I’m surprise nyc hasn’t cancelled shows yet. Because children under 12 couldn’t get the vaccine in time for casting they had to cast over 12. Maybe an adult played Clara the best? Idk. But they didn’t do that intentionally. Unfortunately covid changed a lot.
