Steve, your comments about using noise normalized results instead of OC make perfect sense to me. I have a PNY GTX 1080 with an utter crap cooler but great GPU and memory silicon, and which can't keep them cool enough. It's like a 120-140W cooler on an 180W GPU. The silicon's happy enough to do over 2100 and the memory 12,000 which ofc clocks itself down to 2000 at 83°C under load. I prob should watercool it but instead I go 1923MHz @0.9V and 11,600 memory, using135W at about 70°C. Undervolt FTW with crap coolers.
Hey just a question right now in Australia the Asus strix is going for 1399$ and the red devil version from power cooler 1249$ is the $150 difference worth it?
Well done on the oc decision!! The gains available even on good dies, simply aren't as significant as reliable CPU oc was in the past. More is likely to be gained by under-volting and running cooler with the dynamic power management on modern chips.
Purchased the last 6700XT Hellhound that PCCG had in stock for $899 and had it delivered within 2 days. With a bit of undervolting & overcloking this thing now runs 5% faster than stock while consuming only 186W and GPU temp of 58 degrees (75 hot spot) at full load. Considering that the RTX2060 sells for $750, RTX3060 for $1000, and the 3070 for $1500, the 6700XT for around $900 is without doubt the most sensible choice under the current market!

I agree with your decision not needing to include OC results for specific products. Example I had two reference 6900XT's and one would not OC barely at all, did not even like to be undervolted. I like to see OC results to see how much the chip can go when having good thermal headroom. The OC with the reference models are usually handicapped because of this. Maybe it should be a separate piece and not an AIB comparison/review. Just it's own RX 6700XT OC video, and emphasizing at the start that silicon quality variability is at work here for the different restults.
While I agree you shouldn't look at the OC performance of a single card, it would still be interesting to see how well a certain graphics card (like the rx 6700xt) overclocks on average across all the models you have (Except for the reference design maybe).
I understand the reason not to test OC, but I still think that people are interested in how high a chip can get in general. So I think that you should test this and perhaps do a feature on that once in a while, instead of making it part of the review.
I somehow less and less interested in video review content nowadays and more fond of the video where you guys talking each other regarding to the recent news\event. Out of my curiousity, did that kind of things show up in your youtube statistics??
I have the asus tuf version of the card and I can't believe how quiet and cool it is, I think that the metal part of the cooler is identical. But I noticed that the tdp is just too low on my gpu on stock when going 100% gpu won't use more than 160w while running around 2500mhz, If I oc it to effective 2750+mhz (2850 in wattman) the tdp is still around 200-210w. Reported by the msi afterburner, amd overlay and hwinfo.
@Hardware Unboxed XFX already pre-bins their RX 6700 XT cards. Look at the different names of "Core, Black, and Ultra". Just buy a black or an ultra and you got the best binned XFX version.
Just curious, but is their a reason that most reviewers, not just hub, use the gigabyte gaming oc and not the Aourus? Is it just an availability thing? I managed to get an Aourus 6800xt and it works great, but i couldn't really find any video reviews.
I like OC results, especially for thermals. Historically some cards also used different ram (5700xt micron vs samsung) with fundamentally different performance.
OC results are pretty useless for thermals, noise normalized it significantly more useful for measuring cooler performance. As for the memory, well the teardown answers that question.
Hi Steve, I'd like to move from 1080p to 1440p gaming. Since you made a video about AMD cards performing better with older CPUs (in my case i7 6700k), do you think it's worth upgrading only the GPU? How would you compare the 6700XT against the RTX 3070 with older CPUs?

How is this not enough for a person with a brain and the ability to use their common sense to understand this! And now we all lose information because of some folks being mad. If more tests with OC are available the better we have to achieve a representative picture. Now we have a magazine less testing this kind of data.

I prob should watercool it but instead I go 1923MHz @0.9V and 11,600 memory, using135W at about 70°C. Undervolt FTW with crap coolers.
i feel movement in my pantaloons
Wish i could buy this one love the design so much!!!
Thanks, Steve! I trust your reviews over any other RUclipsr!
hello
which one would you choose between this one and the SAPHHIRE version of the same card?
Bro this intro is so chill
do you recommend this card? i'm going to purchase the same one. Do you have any driver issues?
I run a 6700xt and no driver issues here
is it safe to assume you'll also be ditching oc results for cpu testing moving forward?
Hi, got 6700xt hellhound today, do you have reference source on how to do what you do? (undervolting & overclocking). Seems wonderful since you gain more performance with less consumption
Steve: "at 70% over MSRP, I'd just rather play at 720p with an APU".
That pretty much sums up the GPU market and every single gamer situation right now.
1050ti is really popular in India rn
😂
I like how XFX went from being considered bottom of the barrel on RDNA 1 to being the top of the list with RDNA 2.... Still prefer Sapphire and my Pulse 6800 though lol
Thanks for the Information.
I agree on not paying these ridiculously inflated prices. I planned on upgrading my system with a new GPU *but* as you're aware they're extremely hard to find. If you manage to find one sellers want 30, 40, 50, 60, 70% more than retail to purchase. No thank you. I wanted one to improve my fps not bankruptcy my checking account.
If cards return to being in stock and at a reasonable price then I'll buy. Not until even if my GPU fails.
G'day Steve & Teddy Jr.,
If I could afford a new RX6700XT the choice for me would be simple as not only is the Strix Stoopid Expensive, I don't like the looks,
I'd much prefer a 😈 Red Devil OC & $350AUD in my pocket
I currently have a rx580 with an i78700k, and a Asus Prime z370A mb, and a solid PS. Will have to get the specs on that. I only mentioned it, thinking of getting this card I assume I got to make sure there's enough room on the motherboard power supply will run it and the case is big enough....thanks for the review. I suspect this will be a good upgrade for my 8 gig video card. I mostly play Doom Eternal which is a phenomenal game. Compared to what you might ask? Why of course Duke Nukem from the 90s.
I agree with your decision not needing to include OC results for specific products. Example I had two reference 6900XT's and one would not OC barely at all, did not even like to be undervolted. Ran perfect at stock settings and that was where it liked to be. But the second reference model I had could OC 200mhz higher. Total luck.
just bought the asus tuf 6700xt oc open box £360 :) nice upgrade over my rog strix rx580 8Gb what I was sold on ebay for £220 :)
I was thinking of the 3080 or 6900xt but both over £1000 so it was a no brainer till the new amd comes out and we will se how prices will drop in a year time
Is there a point in testing the power consumption? Are the values locked in terms of voltage or is it just lottery on how good of a chip you get?
Sold my msi gaming x 5700xt for $1000au on gumtree and bought a Sapphire nitro+ 6700xt for $1149au.
Pretty happy with the $150 upgrade.
Mad card, oc clocked to 2.75ghz.
Crazy speed.
Was able to get it at microcenter in chicago for 880 with taxes included on a business trip. Can't complain better then notheing atleast now have a card for the next gen comes out next year with the current crazy prices.
Nice work Stevo.
Do you think you can get your hand on the binned Sapphire Toxic Extreme Edition 6900XT?
Video review content is much less interesting when it's almost impossible to buy any of the parts
Me too
Hi bro..plz what do u think in ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3070 AMP Holo ? Performance and cooling
so i just picked this up from newegg for $430 american or $630 aud. pairing it with a ryzen 7 3700x. tell me i didnt get scammed?
Which is good, asus rog strix 6700xt oc, or aorus rtx 3070ti master oc
Please reply
Depends if you like AMD or Nvidia more, both cards are good for 1440p.
@Hardware Unboxed
XFX already pre-bins their RX 6700 XT cards. Look at the different names of "Core, Black, and Ultra". Just buy a black or an ultra and you got the best binned XFX version.
Thanks for these videos, when everything returns to "normal" at least we already know which one refrigerates better. The one from xfx right?
Yeah honestly that APU argument at the end isn't completely false. For these prices, an APU sounds like a decent solution 😂
Just curious, but is their a reason that most reviewers, not just hub, use the gigabyte gaming oc and not the Aourus? Is it just an availability thing? I managed to get an Aourus 6800xt and it works great, but i couldn't really find any video reviews.
I always buy based off of the temperature tbh I game in long sessions, so a low temp more important to me.
Same. Btw I have the same card as you lol. I'm loving the XFX 6800 XT.
@@Hardwareunboxed yeah the tear downs are very helpful.
1440p testing for CPUs makes little sense, it could be included in addition to 1080p but certainly not replace it.
Can anyone explain me why rx 6700 xt 12 ,gb vram is worse than rx 5700 8 gb vram in mining? Is it reduce mining capability by radeon ,problem with drivers or something else? I cant get it
Keep doing OC results with the top spec kingpin tier gpus please, its the only reason to even buy them lol
OK, I bought one of these (it will be delivered on Monday) from the NewEgg Shuffle for $830.00 plus the cost of a Asus Strix Mobo which was part of the bundle. I can use the Mobo. So, it was worth it. It should hold me over until 6800XT's come down in price.
It was a B450 Asus Strix Mobo. Version II
Very nice when they become in full stock mode and at msrp I might consider this bad boy. :)
I love how they put ASUS on the pcie slot tab.
Hello Hardware Unboxed : Can you do an image quality test between NVIDIA and AMD , iv heard amd is better in rendering games ??
should i get this ASUS strix 6700xt or get the ASUS TUF 6700XT? they have the same specs. same triple fan. almost same price.
strix is higher end
780p lol! You said it brother. Sadly I don't think we will ever see MSRP on these products until they are obsolete. I hope that's not the case but it's looking that way.
I see you are still sporting Teddy. Kevin would be proud.
If your taking out overclocking can you please include the stock power limit and max power limit as this can vary a lot and is a big deciding factor of us who always overclock.
Do you think you’ll review the Acer X34GS anytime soon?
I was planning on getting the sapphire nitro, but then I saw the prices on pccg and well, red devil was the only real choice
I wish the 6800xt and 6900xt Strix had that cooler instead of the goofy liquid cooler they put on them.
Hello, i just ran across a gigabyte radeon rx 6700 xt elite 12gb, and i am aiming to play games at 1080p, can you please tell me if its any good. Thank you
Man, I just can't help but wince when somebody in tech says the word "brace" now. Thanks verge
I was lucky enough to get the xfx speedster quick its been fantastic and seems no different performance wise to the 3070 I had and sold
3070 is faster than 6700xt. the end. 6700xt sits between 3060 ti and 3070. if you use dlss, even 3060 can beat 6700xt tho. im using 3080, which i had since release, paid 700 dollars and overclocked by 10%, best value ever.
@@lort6022 a little salty there buddy. And that's not true it really depends on games as well as what processor it's paired with as well as what resolution your playing at.
@@lort6022 1 year later, and Im here to tell u 3070 is garbage.
with strix cards, you’re paying for better internals on the card for an OC, strix cards have usually 50w higher power limit than the next best card to it
I agree with your point about OC tests.
Why? Hardware Unboxed always said that OC depends on cooling, total air flow in the system, driver and silicon lottery. How is this not enough for a person with a brain and the ability to use their common sense to understand this! And now we all lose information because of some folks being mad.
If more tests with OC are available the better we have to achieve a representative picture. Now we have a magazine less testing this kind of data.
@@niko5514 Most people don't have a brain and the ability to use their common sense, belive me.
How come the 7 heatpipe of Stix and Red Devil have the same noise normalised temps as the 4 heatpipe Nitro+? Are heatpipes overrated?
I have never bothered with upmarket partner boards... They all seem to perform the same, just some at slightly higher temps, which isn't a deal breaker, especially when they're often much much cheaper! I just ordered a reference 6700xt... It's an ex-mining card, hoping that it is still good as it was released only a year ago. (was only $300 USD)
I picked up the ASRock 12GB OC version recently, it was sad not to see it included in the review. I've run a few games at 1080p with max settings it HW Monitor reports 143watts max.
I think a good compromise would be to show OC results on at least reference models to get an idea how much you can potentially squeeze out of graphics cards.
Ended up grabbing a 6700xt hellhound off of ebay. For 960. With nothing being in stock and I gave it a good wait but finally gave in. Could deal with the rx 550 I had sitting in a x570 aorus master. Overall happy with it over payed but Newegg is selling the same card for 90 dollars less. So waiting didn't seem to be worth 90 bucks to me
I have the Strix 3070 and its a BEAST! Best of the 3070 cards on the market for sure
you are clueless, there's pretty much no difference in performance among the cards. all are powerlimited and locked down.the cheapest custom card will be like 1% slower than the most expensive one. nothing new here. it was the same with turing. im using 3080 so i could not care less but what im saying is facts. you are stupid to pay top-price for a custom card. the most expensive 3070 will never come even close to even the cheapest 3080 and 3070 strix is almost 3080 price. stupid.
Paying that much for a 3% improvement is insane. If I purchased one the cooler is useless to me anyways as I would be water cooling it.
chad move, did you do it in the end?
You're doin a giveaway right???
OK, no OC stats which you reasonably explain. I'm fine with that, even going forward. Rather play at 720p on an APU? I call bullsh*t on that ...
Man... And here I was hoping the hypothetical lower thermal dissipation requirements of the 'lower end' (in relation to the 6800 XT at least) cards would mean smaller coolers so SFF users would have more options.
They make smaller variants as well. I know Asus makes a 2 fan model for the 6700 XT and the 3070 they call Dual, I think.
I jumped on the 3090 hype band wagon when it was released and got it from First Blood Computers back in Feb however they had already increased their resale cost of the 3090 strix oc model to $3600 AUD and $3700 for the white edition. Now they are still in stock at that store but selling at prices between $3900 to $4200 depending on what day it is. I grabbed my 3090 for the 4k gaming benefit for my new LG CX 65" that the Mrs and I bought for xmas. Great pairing but overclocking values. I lucked out a bit from what i've seen. Cannot get any higher results even after just spending over $1200 AUD on a full custom ek loop. Clocks @ 2175mhz with a memory clock of 1219mhz, Card temp at 50 degrees C... Memory just wont go any further. Also needing EK to release that active backplate. Cannot get the temps on the backside of the card though under 98 degrees C... which just heat soaks my 980 pro nvme above the card on the asus crosshair hero viii x570 board. Anyone got any ideas ??
