Great review with very practical advices on the variants, very useful for ppl looking to buy CX-5, appreciated, hope can see more videos like this in future, thanks a lot 👍🏻
Hi Kon! Good review! The title says u are reviewing CX5 2.0 GL but i believe you covered all specs!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Maybe i watched your review a bit too late after i already booked a unit but all in all i think i made a good decision, thanks to your review here! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I actually confuse which one SUV I need to buy.. it's Mazda CX 5, Xtrail or CRV for daily use. Personally I like CX 5 because of the premium look especially the interior but for the space fact I prefer Xtrail because have 5+2 seat and also CRV. Plz help me which one better.
Ermm... the rear seats of the X-Trail offer very limited space, but if you need em means you need em la. (Have you considered the Mitsubishi Outlander) CR-V is the segment's best all-rounder. It's simply a question whether you just want the basic 2.0 i-VTEC, the 1.5T AWD, or 1.5T FWD with Honda Sensing.
Thanks for your opinion Kon,, Actually im not interested on Outlander.. Sorry :) will look for Honda CRV 2.0 or 1.5T FWD and also Mazda CX 5.. Just want to ask you it is true if 1.5 turbocharge engine will resulting in highly maintenance cost for long term period etc after 5 years?
There definitely will be higher maintenance costs. The turbo alone will have additional wear and tear parts plus fluids to change, plus don't forget your entire engine is running higher stress levels. The engine should continue to run reliably, but on the condition that maintenance intervals are accordingly respected.
Thanks Kon. after watching your video i have made a decision on my next car. your points are very practical & value for $$ perspective. keep on giving us good reviews from a man on the street perspective.
They are both closely matched, the CX-5 feels more refined and more pleasant for on-road use, but the Subaru is more rugged will take rough use punishment better.
Hi sir. Loved your review...betul2 jujur...but just to check...between the 2.0 GL and GLS, does the safety features gives your a really difference in terms of safety? Are they very crucial or can safe driving also replace the features? As i am looking at the GS but still can afford a GLS (penat sikit at additional rm200++ per month).. thank you
The bigger difference to me in the GLS are the convenience features... keyless entry, power boot. If budget is a factor, try Mazda Anshin and get a pre-registered GLS.
As KWL rightly suggested, you should go for the 2.0 high version of the cx5. When comparing the x70 premium to the cx5 2.0 GLS, my personal preference would be the cx5. Mazda is a wayyyyyyyy more reliable brand than Proton. With Mazda, you can be rest assured that the maintenance cost will be lower and the fuel efficiency is better. X70 premium does have a few extra features, but the question is do you really need those extra features? Also, Mazda’s after sales is tried and tested. Proton X70 is comparatively a newer range and the after sales is highly questionable. Conclusion - if you want class and reliability, go for Mazda. If you want slightly more space and features, go for x70.
Interesting review. I have got two questions. 1) I have never driven a diesel engine before but i was told that in the long run there will be knocking sound like all diesel engines and the maintenance cost if higher in the diesel engine compared to petrol. Is this true? 2) I test drove the 2.0 GLS CX-5 and CRV and found the CRV sluggish as in when i step on the pedal i don't get an immediate response from the car compared to CX-5. Do you feel the same too?
1) Yes and no. Diesel engines utilize more consumables (such as engine oil) than petrol engine, but you recover that added cost quickly in the form of far superior fuel economy. You also don't have to worry about spark plugs, and diesel engines are generally built sturdier than their petrol counterparts. 2) No comment, as I have yet to try the CR-V 2.0, but I'm not surprised. The CX-5's engine has direct injection, giving it better low- to mid-range torque than the port injection CR-V, hence the punchier feel.
Kon. I'm confuse on paper why 2.2D takes about 9.5s for 0-100km compare to 2.5NA 8.8s? does that mean cx5 2.5NA is more powerful than the 2.2d? Can you enlighten me on this matter.
Kon, need a clarification, in 12:44, you mentioned on autonomous emergency braking, a fast rushing vehicle coming from rear, and once the system detected that it will perform emergency braking by stopping all the 4 wheels. Is the system detecting the car in front or rear cars to avoid collision? If it’s on rear, would this going to cause higher chances of accident because there’s always cars rushing from behind either they bypass the cx5 (zic zac) closely or they breaking in the last seconds.
I owned d 2.5 specs: d reason was 2.0 still felt strained if pushed & euro 5 is not widely available over east malaysia. D 2.5 na engine is damn peppy & zippy fun driving
+Kim Wah Chueng thanks for your perspective. Yeah, there are times when the 2.0 feels strained, but it's still relatively torquier than most other 2.0 SUVs of the same size out there. Like your car?
I think you should try out the Diesel turbo for a whole day. Try driving it in the morning and during a hot afternoon. My experience driving Turbo in Malaysia, you'd notice the power loss during a hot day. Engines I've experienced were Golf 1.4 TSI MK6 and Kia Grand Carnival 2.2 Diesel. Hence why I plan to take the 2.5GLS. I also have to qualify that I like NA for the engine build up in speed. Turbo just can't give the same excitement especially especially on a hot day.
Good enough point there. Actually, Mazda cars, in my experience, tend to be better balanced dynamically with petrol engines. Then again, I advocate the diesel model for the CX-5 mostly for its effortless low end torque.
Between base spec, I think mazda will worth it, I remember comparing Mazda2, City, vios all base spec, mazda 2 the cheapest, rm72k, the other two about rm74k+, all 3 no keyless entry, no rear aircon vent, no reverse cam, no LED light, But when it comes to high spec, tetibe mazda melambung mahal, mazda2 90k, and city about 86k, ni masa tu la, skang tak update latest price
Hi Kon, I understand that the 2.0GL is fine for in town driving, but do you reckon it will do well for long distance drives? in terms of driving around 120kmh and road noise. Thanks for replying to the questions
Hi Chief, I'm in a very bad dilemma currently with the gst + raya rebate for Nissan X-Trail Aero & CX-5 2.0 GL. The price difference after the rebates + insurance will just be around 3k - 4K higher for CX-5. Pleaseeee help me to make up my mind :(
Very good review. Love the gls 2.0. But lack of 360 camera, no sunroof , no cream leather n no head up display. Will these features come in next batch n when? TQ
Hi, Kon, im currently considering Mazda 2.0GLS and CRV 2.0L 2WD, can you give some recommendation? I heard the sound proof in cabin are bad for CRV. Besides, im quite worry the 2.0 will make the car feel very "no power" Appreciate if you could give me some of your insight.. thank you very much in advance
I think both do okay in this respect, but I've been hearing mixed reviews on aftersales. My own personal experience with Mazda SC has been pleasant, however.
The CX-5 is more modern, better refined, and generally feels more upmarket. The Forester, on the other hand, is more robust, and the car you'd trust more for harder use.
Since the cx5 gl comes with only the 17 inch rim, what is the impact to the car if we upgrade to the 19 inch rim which is offered by the higher spec cx5 ?
Kon, what are your thoughts about all keyless entry systems being susceptible to RF sniffing + rolling code decryption attacks? Just a casual search on Aliexpress reveal that you can buy such kits for even under US$40... keyless entry cloning kits.. it doesn't take much to attach external antennas to increase the range of these devices. I think there's still merits in regular remote control systems as unlike keyless entry systems, the key fobs won't respond to spoofed signals from such kits that enable car thieves to decode a car's rolling code and steal a car easily..
+Jae Senn i see your point in this, and its admittedly scary. But if it's a car for my wife, I'd still pick a car with keyless entry. It eliminates the need for her to fumble through her handbag for the car keys at a parking lot... a lengthy stretch of time during which she can be potentially attacked. Yes, there is a risk of the car being stolen, but I'd take stealing over robbery anyday.
interesting comment. I remember the time when a car key is an actual physical key that you have to insert into the door and twist (the horror!) to open the door, then it became a button on the fob and now key-less. In future, face or voice recognition technology will make even the fob/key-less redundant. Tech has so desensitize us idle people that we have lost sense of proportionality. Personally I don't mind fumbling in my pocket to press a button, it is not going to kill me. And I don't mean it as just a figure of speech because literally - if a robber/attacker/killer has their malicious eyes on me, I don't think whether I have key-less or not would be top their worries. There is enough time between opening the door, getting in and closing the door to do what they ill-intend to do. So that is a moot point. Therefore back to the original question which was more practically framed as key-less vulnerability versus car theft issue - i.e. should people opt for slight inconvenience as a trade-off against car theft risk. I think many people has this dilemma - what would your advice on this particular aspect?
I like your well-reasoned train of thought, and there's no right or wrong answer to your question. Personally, I feel risk is something that people may or may not face, but convenience/inconvenience faces you day in day out. At the end of the day, it's peace of mind vs ease of use. What's your preference? Agreed that if a bad person has already marked us as a target, they'd mug us anyway keyless or not, but my point is that the window of opportunity is significantly lower. It also reduces the chances of amateurs getting at you. I still appreciate the good old action of twisting the key, but the ones that irritate me are cars with the start/stop button, but without keyless entry. Personally, if a car comes without keyless entry, I'd prefer there be a slot in which to insert the key fob.
The Tiguan, according to Bobby, feels sportier in its handling. The 2.5 gives you more effortless performance compared to the 2.0 and is more refined than the punchier 2.2 diesel
Hi Kon.. I have 2 questions.. need your opinion. 1. If I take Mazda 2.0 GLS it is possible the acceleration will drop if I change sport rim from 17 inch to 18 inch or 19 inch. 2. For your opinion which one the better suv it is Xtrail or mazda CX 5 if we focus on performance for daily use.
1. Acceleration will definitely take a hit. 18-inch may be okay, but 19-inch may lead to very sluggish performance and increased fuel consumption. 2. X-Trail is more practical on the inside, but it is an aging model, and an offering of only 2 airbags continue to be a big disappointment for the price.
Thanks Kon for your opinion. Unfortunately for Nissan malaysia why still maintain same spec since 2014. 2 airbags is the obviously disappointed. I agreed about the aging model. Why nissan Singpore, Indonesia and Thai can bring the better spec and new facelift but not for nissan malaysia. :(
I can't answer this on behalf of the distributor, but I do say that the X-Trail is a handsome-looking car and I think is still the only one among its competitors to offer 360-degree camera. Still, the 2 airbag specification is a big Achilles heel, and it surprises me that it has not been addressed despite being roundly criticized.
Like what was commented, the premium paint option increased in price from 2k to 3k in 2018, not something I’d opt for. On top of that, some other subjective feedback: powered seat adjustments tend to have more areas for adjustment eg lumbar support whereas manual may not have. Another area that’s affected for the GL is the centre console area is not soft touch, so your leg rests on hard plastic. What’s your thought on the lack of a front parking sensor though?
Yeah, RM3k, my mistake. Agreed on your point with powered seats, but if you've saved RM14k off the purchase price, that's an acceptable omission. Front parking sensors will be useful for an SUV this size, but it's not a major handicap as you can always install aftermarket sensors.
Yes agreed. Tested Tucson dct 1.6 turbo. Very good performance indeed. Perky. Better than Civic turbo in pick up. Wondering cx5 petrol going to hv turbo in next model. cx5 handling and interior feel like a conti but noticeable still loud road noise. Could be its 19".
Hi Kon , appreciate if you can do detail review and test drive new 2018 Harrier 2.0 Turbo. I find it too bouncy and not as quick as Tucson 1.6T although Harrier has more powerful engine.
Totally agree with u KON, the only drawback for me is the keyless entry, and I actually prefer the fabric seat, I don't like leather seat, even for the tyre I prefer the 17inch with high profile, lucky mazda keep the LED headlight in this base spec, the rear and DRL use bulb but I can accept that, altho wud be better with LED. Cume minyak makan sikit la, 6.9L /100KM compare to diesel 5.5L/100km
Hi Kon. Great videos. Just found out your channel today and I've watched 5 videos in a row. Haha. Would you be able to share your email as I've got some questions.
I do not understand why 62 people disliked this video when in fact Mister KWL gave a greatly informative review.

Hi Jon, love your review. What is your advice between the CX5 2.0 GLS vs VW Tiguan 1.4 on the performance and acceralation.
Good review, simple, clear & direct. It is really helpful to consider which model to choose... thanks & keep it up

Very good review. However, I was told that to get metallic colour need RM3k instead of RM 2 K top up. Anyone ?
Yes, RM3k. My error there, noted in the description section.
What is your view of this CX5 vs Subaru XV in terms of ride comfort and handling?
They are both closely matched, the CX-5 feels more refined and more pleasant for on-road use, but the Subaru is more rugged will take rough use punishment better.
Very good review... thumbs up 👍🏻 good explanation..thank you

Kon, Is CX5 2.0GL is sluggish compare to the 2.5GLS given the body weight for both are almost the same.
+Wong Tan Kim at town speeds no, but when you push it real hard can feel la. Main point, however, is that for everyday driving.... good enough.
I have 2.5 AWD Gran Touring US trim. Very complete package and a great vehicle.
Nice. In Malaysia, the 2.5 is FWD only. AWD is only available with the diesel engine which, I believe, is not sold in your market?

Yes! I'm choosing too.... Pls make a video for it!!
Hello Kon, still undecided between X70 vs CX5 2.0 ? Any good suggestion for me?
Hi kon happy new year , kon is the sound insulation for 2.0 base spec good enough for daily driving and it better than the 2.2 diesel?
Good enough for me. The petrol model definitely quieter than the diesel.
Kon Wai Luen ok thank ,kon is the cx5 new model interior design like a premium car ?
Kon, need a clarification, in 12:44, you mentioned on autonomous emergency braking, a fast rushing vehicle coming from rear, and once the system detected that it will perform emergency braking by stopping all the 4 wheels. Is the system detecting the car in front or rear cars to avoid collision?
If it’s on rear, would this going to cause higher chances of accident because there’s always cars rushing from behind either they bypass the cx5 (zic zac) closely or they breaking in the last seconds.
Oh that's not what it's supposed to do. Rear AEB is meant to work when the car is stopped, and there's a car zooming in from the back.

Your review is fantastic
Just wondering where is the halogen DRL located. Is it at the very far end/corner of the headlamp?
The inside corner of the headlamp.
Kon, is there a chance you will be doing a similar review for the base CRV model?
Hoping to arrange, but nothing firm yet.
Hi Kon may u do a base spec for honda CRV? Then we can compare the base model btw cx5 n crv which offer the best
Had that thought too. Good idea.
Kon Wai Luen you should! lol
Im wanna know the result cz now im confuse which 1 is better.. wanna buy it but still in confuse n dont know 😅
Between base spec, I think mazda will worth it, I remember comparing Mazda2, City, vios all base spec, mazda 2 the cheapest, rm72k, the other two about rm74k+, all 3 no keyless entry, no rear aircon vent, no reverse cam, no LED light,
But when it comes to high spec, tetibe mazda melambung mahal, mazda2 90k, and city about 86k, ni masa tu la, skang tak update latest price
Great review & really helpful advice.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Kon, I understand that the 2.0GL is fine for in town driving, but do you reckon it will do well for long distance drives? in terms of driving around 120kmh and road noise. Thanks for replying to the questions
It'll do good enough, just that if you really want to carry higher speeds, then the bigger capacity engines help you do so in a more relaxed fashion.
Hi Chief, I'm in a very bad dilemma currently with the gst + raya rebate for Nissan X-Trail Aero & CX-5 2.0 GL. The price difference after the rebates + insurance will just be around 3k - 4K higher for CX-5. Pleaseeee help me to make up my mind :(
Sounds like you prefer CX-5 right? Then go for CX-5 lor.
Great video.. Pls pls place your camera angle like this.. Thank you..
+Henry Walla haha. Ok. Noted for future vids. :)
Very good review. Love the gls 2.0. But lack of 360 camera, no sunroof , no cream leather n no head up display. Will these features come in next batch n when? TQ
I subscribing u now 😊
Hi, Kon, im currently considering Mazda 2.0GLS and CRV 2.0L 2WD, can you give some recommendation?
I heard the sound proof in cabin are bad for CRV. Besides, im quite worry the 2.0 will make the car feel very "no power"
Appreciate if you could give me some of your insight.. thank you very much in advance
Power wise, I have heard of no complaints regarding the CR-V 2.0 being underpowered, but overall, I feel the CX-5 is the far more appealing option.
@@KonWaiLuen OK Thank you very much, i guess i will choose CX-5 =) appreciate ur reply
Hii, hmm if i am choosing between honda hrv and mazda cx5 , my priority is reliable, which can be a better choice ya? Anyway Thanks!

- Higher FC
- Reduced straight line performance
- Reduced comfort
Is it rear still crampy and also engine a bit noisy?
+Thayanand Palanisamy not as spacious as the CR-V, but dont feel the engine is noisy.

which is better suv: 2018 CX-5 2L or 2017 Tucson 1.6 turbo?
Both are good. CX-5 handles better and has better cabin build, but Tucson Turbo offers punchier performance la.
Which u recommend , crv or cx5?
CR-V for outright practicality and space, CX-5 for design and driving enjoyment.

Hi Kon, what about comparing with Tiguan with this model or 2.5
The Tiguan, according to Bobby, feels sportier in its handling.
The 2.5 gives you more effortless performance compared to the 2.0 and is more refined than the punchier 2.2 diesel

Possible, but no mention yet.

Front parking sensors will be useful for an SUV this size, but it's not a major handicap as you can always install aftermarket sensors.
btw, try to maintain consistency for the volume levels of your voice :)
Thanks for the comment. This one my former video colleague in Carlist got tegur me before about this, have to practice more.
Test drove the 2.0. The acceleration is somewhat laggy despite its good road handling n comfort. Shld opt for 2.2d or 2.5 for full satisfaction
For now, there's no sign of a turbocharged CX-5, but in the car industry, you just never know.
Hi Kon , appreciate if you can do detail review and test drive new 2018 Harrier 2.0 Turbo. I find it too bouncy and not as quick as Tucson 1.6T although Harrier has more powerful engine.
Without keyless entry is the biggest deal-breaker for this GL model. The rest is not a big deal for me.... sigh. 😔
Yeah, the GLS model much more worth.
How does the drive compare to the CX8?
CX-5 drives sportier, naturally.
@@KonWaiLuen as expected 👌 how about in terms of comfort and interior.. CX8 slightly better?
Hi Kon ! What's that bulge behind the rear view mirror ?
You had me there
Rain sensing wipers
Very true on the start / stop button
Glad you agree. Haha.
How about NVH?
Improved over the predecessor, but still not segment best.
Hello. Does 2.0 have turbo or not?
Nope. 2.0 is NA.
@@KonWaiLuen 2.2 diesel or 2.5? Because i want turbo
But subaru xv pun tinggi jugak makan minyak 7.3L/100km
X trail hybrid not stated so I'm not sure regarding the fuel consumption,
I think they've since upgraded even the lower spec to include keyless entry. But one spec up is really all the upgrade you need
Nice review , keep it up bro
Thanks for watching!
no keyless???
Mazda mmng kedekut utk basic spec haha
Keyless
