Came here to say this. While I feel that these apps need to have better security measures, at the end of the day it all comes back to the parents. As a mother or father, YOU are solely responsible for your child. Stop letting them have smartphones/devices, monitor their internet usage, and do not let them onto social media. Not trying to sound overly harsh, but if your child has unsupervised access to these apps and ends up in a horrible situation, it's not the fault of the creators of the app. You have failed as a parent.

I don’t think the social media CEO’s should be held accountable at all. It’s easy for users to lie about ages, names, literally anything. Short of scanning our IDs and monitoring every message with a human, there’s really nothing they could to. It’s up to users themselves and parents. Not saying they’re good people, but…

    • @madisonsullivan9960

What keeps them from scanning our ID? So many apps require it nowadays, why wouldn’t we do it on TikTok, Roblox, meta, etc? I think it’d be a better safety net than what they have going on now. I just know that TikTok doesn’t follow their community guidelines regarding child safety, nor do they watch the lives and see what is happening. I can agree with you to an extent honestly, but something has to change. It is disgusting what kids can see by just scrolling TikTok live or Facebook stories

To be fair- the method isn't the issue, that's like saying car makers should pay out people who die in car accidents. It's the people using the product responsibility to use the product responsibly.
Why not blame the parents at this point, if they are doing a better job of being present parents. Those tragedies could have been avoided
    🤷🏼‍♀️ play devils advocate.
Why not blame the phone makers the allow those apps to be uploaded to the phones.
Why not blame companies for advertising and targeting teens and kids.

Social media issues wouldn't be such an issue if more parents actually involved themselves in their kids' life. It all comes down to that. I see so many parents around me that let their kid do whatever they want as long as they don't bother them. Their kid is living a double life rigght under their noses. My 11 yr old does not have social media and no tech stays in his room at night. I have his login for nintendo and can view all the games he is playing. It's not overbearing as long as you have a conversation with your child about all the dangers and why you don't do certain things. Communication is key.

I thought about this years ago. This is such a weird time & transition between the parents & their kids generation. Many adults don’t know how social media REALLY works. There are so many people who messaged me online from 15 to 17 & the easiest thing to do is to just block them. Parents need to understand that messaging strangers online is normal now but they DO NOT need to respond. My mom would always get mad at me asking who is this and who is that & I literally didn’t know them. They would just try to talk to me & I wouldn’t talk back since I was a little older by the time it got popular. I always had a FB but not a smart phone until I was older. Not to mention the random disgusting nudes guys would send randomly & I never knew them and never even talked to them. We all know we get sent random dick pics from someone across the globe. My mom thought I was engaging in it when it was literally out of my control. That’s just how it is now!! There are more parental blocks now which will help but parents need to have this conversation and actually learn about it works cuz it’s not always the child’s fault. I would just be living my life and have some stupid guys blowing up my phone getting me in trouble, people I never met and didn’t even know! That’s the part where they need to learn what’s normal now and what to do.

I will protect my children. I do not rely on the government or social media platforms for MY child’s safety. I have access to all of their social media accounts and I educate myself on how each one works. If the platform does not meet your safety needs or you are as parent don’t understand it then don’t let your children use it. We cannot put blame on others for our children safety or exposure to the internet. There are so many phone options that enable parents to monitor their children’s activities online. We can’t just say I’m too busy working or keeping a household to educate ourselves with the platforms. We must prioritize this, as you can see our children’s lives depend upon this. DO NOT RELY ON STRANGERS TO PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN!!

Another senator called out one of the CEOs saying "You dont feel guilty that a child shot themselves" something to that degree, but we completely ignore that a child had a gun? 😭

My house was built in 1912 & was most likely a kit from Sears or a company like it. Isn't that wild???
A few years ago, I had a CHILD ask me if I was poor because I have a Samsung & not an iPhone... (cuz I'm an android girly) I feel like that mindset is setting up the younger generation for financial failure. You don't NEED the expensive things, you NEED food, shelter, etc.

And obviously educating your kids on internet safety with it. I also think age appropriate computer activities are important. I saw a TikTok talking about how when we were kids we were on a completely different internet than adults, i.e. club penguin, Gaia, the Disney channel games etc.

I was abused on Snapchat when I was 13 to 16 years old. I'm turning 24 this year. The fact that this is still happening and that the big companies like Meta still haven't done more is infuriating to me. I struggled for years with my mental health even after it was over. I've spent countless hours in counselling. And I probably would never have needed it if Snapchat never existed. My child will never be allowed unsupervised access to ANY social media platform.

@@mariacherrington61920 Considering how many children are on social media I understand how many people would see it as offensive when people use cuss words. I just think it's insane that they claim to take cyber bullying and SA seriously, when they know how long it has been going on. They should have been taking it seriously 10 years ago, and it shouldn't be a problem anymore.

They will have basic phones that just make calls and text. She is going old school with one computer in a communal area of the house. It’s not much, but it’s about the best you can do. That and child safety settings on the computer.
