I'm actually glad Rebel Moon was made, because it helps put to rest the notion that Zack Snyder was ever a "brilliant film-maker." I never liked the DC movies he cranked out, and I found all the Snyder fanboying to be creepy--culminating in the ridiculous "Release the Snyder Cut" campaign. (And when the much-anticipated Snyder Cut *was* released, it was overlong, dark and tedious crap, just as expected.)
"Rebel Moon" shows all the standard Snyder flaws--obsession with slow-mo, zero characterization, lazy plagiarism of better movies, vague "I'll explain later (except I won't)" plot, overexposed orange landscapes, and the notion that "string enough cool shots together and you've written a movie." This is the Snyder formula laid bare, without any mitigating factors like pre-established characters and lore to help conceal the flaws. Rebel Moon is 100% pure Snyder--and it has proven that Snyder is pretty crappy.

I'll admit that I wanted the Snyder cut and I don't hate it, but as you mentioned that's only because it was mitigated with well established characters and stories. This movie is utterly pointless in just about every way, except for the fact that it exposes Snyder for all to see.

I think his movies are a hit or miss but when I'm glad that Rebel Moon showed is that he learned all the worst things from working in DC. The movie single thing about Rebel Moon makes it rebel moon because of all the dumb ass shit he did in DC including the toxic fan base. He ended up building up and the whole Snyder cut bullshit.

Same. While I found the JL Snyder Cut was ultimately an improvement on the theatrical release, this only emphasized the dysfunction in Zach's storytelling. I will also give Zach a little leeway as I hold WB Studios responsible for that mess in a big way.

I think Michael Bay has a self-awareness and satirical streak that Snyder would never be able to possess. Yes, it’s hard to see, but I legitimately feel like Michael Bay imbues (some) of his work with a sort of meta-textual substance that goes right over Snyder’s handsome head.

If Snyder had really wanted to be edgy, the person trying to "buy" Gunner would have been hot (whether male or female) and make Gunner kind of hesitate, deciding not to do it because he wanted to stay with Kora. That would have been the twist the trope needed, but nah, why bother with something innovative when you can just repeat and rehash.

It's been a few days, and I want to try what I'll just call a creative writing exercise.
This is all off the cuff, and not planned beforehand, so bear with me.
Also, RUclips has a character limit, so this is gonna be a few comments.
I would start the film, not with an exposition dump, but with Kora tossing and turning in her sleep and the camera viewing this from a top down angle. I do this because there is absolutely zero reason to lore dump when you are already going to explain it anyway again later in a more natural way.
You hear in the background some dialogue, "YOUR MAJESTY." "GET THE PRINCESS OUT OF HERE." and then an explosion.
This is the point where she wakes up, puts on a jacket, and goes to farm outside at night.
Now Gunner can show up and tell her about the elk, and yes, he actually killed it this time.
She refuses at first, but instead of seemingly like he is DTF, he instead appeals to her by saying that more meat will help he stay strong, implying that perhaps she is thinner now than when she arrived.
Kora doesn't sit with Gunner, instead deciding to take the chair from the table and sit away from the others.
Sam, who is younger in this, then approaches her and in an attempt to get closer, tells the actual story of how Gunner got the elk, which is that it charged him and he fell over backwards, his pitchfork piercing the beast entirely on accident.
Kora smirks, and this causes Sam to cheer a little that she got Kora to smile, which she denies.
Now I've set up Sam as someone willing to talk with loners, trying to get closer to Kora, and generally being a good person, and Gunner as being somewhat bumbling rather than a hunter.
During the harvest someone mentions that it's barely enough and they might not even be able to sell excess to cover the imperial tax.
Then the ship slowly pierces the clouds without warning.
Kora's hand shakes, but she keeps it together and volunteers to take the vegetables back to the village and empty them.
She then goes to her home and starts grabbing what she can.
Sam sees her running out of her house and wonders where she is going, but Kora lies and says she's going to go check on the animals before she goes back out to the harvest, and Sam, being a young teen, believes her.
When the imperials arrive, Kora is looking down from the mountain, not in the village.
But rather than looking at the soldiers, she zooms in on the dropships itself, which is to imply that she plans to take it and leave.
The scene of Noble killing the chief isn't because Gunner is stupid, but rather the chief says that they don't have any excess and they are already going to need to ration what they have.
Things are tense, and it seems for a moment like Noble is going to leave, but he then shoots the chief and everyone freezes.
"There, now you have one less mouth to feed."
It isn't the chief's wife that gets killed, but a few of the men who try to attack them.
Gunner is put in charge of the village by Noble because he didn't try to fight back, and then he is told that they are going to come back in 10 weeks as in the original, but they are also only leaving six men, which is the same number of men who were killed for trying to fight back.
Kora is still looking from above, and sees them drag the bodies of the men outside, but then she goes back to the ships before hearing Sam scream.
In this, Sam is the chief's daughter, a minor change, but I wanted her to be the reason Kora comes back down to the village, and it was either the chief or some random guy as her father.
Kora looks back and forth from the ships to Sam, but settles on looking at same grieving her father.
The soldiers unloading scene happens more or less as it did before, but the perspective is from Jimmy, and you see his UI glitch out after he gets shot in the eye, yet otherwise his armor can't be hurt by the shots, and he nearly enters combat mode with all of his lights going red, but he recognizes the IFF tag on the soldier and that overrides his ability to fight back.
One other change is that the soldier mentions how nobody knows how they work and they can't read their memories.
The soldier tells him to bury the bodies from the scene before, and this is how he meets Sam, but when he approaches her he calls her Issa and once more his vision bugs out, leading to the misidentification.
She makes a flower crown for her father to be buried with and Jimmy tries to console her, leading to her putting it on him instead.
The scene where Sam gets assaulted instead happens to her mother, and inside the dropship instead of the barn.
Gunner sees this and runs to grab a weapon, but standing outside, he can't do it.
Kora then arrives, grabbing the hand scythe from his him and telling him to stop Sam from seeing what's about to happen.
Another change is that because of the somewhat cramped quarters, the soldiers can't shoot, or rather shouldn't, because Kora dodges a shot and one of the soldiers ends up killing another, which causes the captain to yell out that they needs to switch to their knives.
As the fight happens, you can tell she is struggling because she's rusty and not as strong as she was in the army because of the lack of nutrition.
When she's down to two men, one with a gun and the other on top of her, pushing his knife against her scythe, Gunner throws a rock from outside, hitting the man in the head and letting her get the kill.
The last man then takes Sam's mother hostage while Gunner and Kora hide behind a wall.
Now Jimmy, who is back in his box form, is woken up by the solder is ordered to pick up the gun, but he cannot follow the order to shoot Kora and Gunner in the back, which Kora knows so she isn't worried about it.
Sam can now come in, and when Jimmy still refuses to shoot them, the soldier briefly points his gun at Sam, which causes Jimmy, who sees her as Issa, to instantly change his stance and shoot the soldier.
As Sam's mother runs to her, Jimmy, now standing over the soldier, unloads a dozen more shots into the man.
Jimmy now goes to Sam, calls her Issa, and then kneels as he asks if she is alright.
Sam seems fine with this and thanks him, but her mother shields her from him.
Kora then starts talking to Jimmy, who is in full knight mode instead of servant mode.
Because of who she was, he recognizes her and shows respect.
Kora tries to take control of Jimmy, but because Sam says not to go, he says that her command was overwritten.
Now Kora has to convince Sam to transfer command, which she does fairly easily by saying that she is going to avenge her father.

Kora tries to use the ship, but it is locked so it can only go into space if it is to get back to the destroyer, but it can still fly around in atmosphere.
Gunner tries to talk, but she just asks him if the space port would have somebody that could bypass the system.
Then he says that maybe with all of the weapons on the dropship they have a chance to fight back when Noble comes back.
She calls him an idiot, because even if they killed Noble, he has the entire empire behind him, but more importantly, imperial army guns are IFF tagged, so the villagers couldn't use them anyway. (this is to explain why as a child when she pulled the trigger on the regent it didn't work)
Kora says that she is going to take the guns and the ship, sell them and then leave.
He asks why she even came back, to which she replies that she had a debt to be repaid to the next of kin, meaning Sam, since it was the chief who saved her when her ship crashed.
He accuses her of actually caring about people, but then she tells him to shut up and that she's going to take the ship and guns to sell.
Gunner says that she wouldn't be able to sell anything without a contact and that Providence has a large imperial presence.
She says that she'll figure it out and tells him to leave.
He then says, rather meekly, that he has such a contact.
She scoffs at the idea, and offended, he says that he does and that he's been selling food to rebels and that the chief was in on it as well.
Here we can get a scene of Kora going to her home to grab her gun, but it's wrapped in cloth to hide the engravings.
The scenes in Providence start like before, but instead of them happening to show up at the exact moment the contact is taken, instead they see his body hanging from the city gate with a sign around his neck saying rebel.
As they walk through the town, Kora is looking for someone else, but Gunner says that you can't just tell someone is a Rebel by looking at them, which causes her to reply "You can if you've..."
He tries to get her to finish, but she threatens him.
Now the bar scene can happen, she finds a shady smuggler, Kal.
He denies being one of course, but she uses an old old rebel handshake and tells him that they have an imperial dropship and weapons to sell.
Kal look deeply in her eyes, certain that she was familiar to him but he shook it off.
He taps on the table and then nods to the barkeep, who nods back, and they head to a back room that leads to a secret basement.
Kal notices the big guy in robes and asks for an introduction.
He pulls down the hood to reveal Jimmy, and Kal then pulls a gun.
Kora and Jimmy draw on him, but Gunner ducks.
Now Kal recognizes her as Arthelais, who failed to save the royal family and was then demoted to being a commissar.
She knows how to find a rebel because she used to hunt them, but once she had a chance to get out, she took it.
They argue back and forth, with Kora eventually convinces him that she's not here to hunt, and she's really just wanting to get somewhere that the empire can't find her.
Kal offers his ship, but on one condition.
General Titus was captured and forced to fight by a warlord, not an imperial, hence him being a gladiator. Kal wants to get him out.
Kora wants to know why, since he's nobody now, but Kal says that Titus could lead them to other rebel leaders that split up after the first major revolt failed.
She doesn't like it, but agrees.
This solves the problem of why the greedy Kal would volunteer his ship for a low cost.
In space on the way to Titus, Kora pulls a gun on Kal and asks why she shouldn't just take the ship now.
He says that she could, but she'd only be able to land once, since without his password it wouldn't start again.
She puts her gun away and they keep going with the plan.
Instead of the last person, Titus is now the first one they recruit.
The tournament happens every month, and the prize is anything that the warlord can grant within his power.
They try at first to figure out a prison break, but they realize it would be impossible, so they decide to enter the tournament.
Gunner obviously won't do it, Kal says that he's more of a trickster than a fighter, leaving Kora and Jimmy.
The tournament isn't open to non-humans, and Kora isn't confident that she can do it because she is too rusty.
NOW Kal can say that he has another idea, and before the fight, they go to recruit Tarak.
In the original movie, it's basically useless, and has like a dozen lines.
But here, they NEED to save him so he can fight for them in the tournament.

    • @ImTakingYouToFlavorTown
      @ImTakingYouToFlavorTown 4 месяца назад +1

They head off to find Tarak, and find that he's in debt slavery because Kal screwed him over on a deal.
Kal says that he lost the cargo, but Tarak accuses him of selling it to someone else.
Kora steps in and tries to convince him that she could break his chains, kill his master, and leave, but Tarak refuses because he made a deal and he wouldn't sully his honor by breaking his word.
Now Hickman can show up, but the deal is that Tarak has to tame the hippogriff within the day, and then he's willing to loan him out to them for the month, and if he can't then Kora has to sleep with him.
Gunner rejects, but Kora accepts, he tries to tell her not to, but she says that she'll shoot him before she lets him lay a hand on her.
Tarak tames the hippogriff, seemingly, but Hickman is killed when he tries to ride it because its actually intelligent and only let Tarak ride it so it could get away.
Now Tarak is free, but he also says that he will honor the deal.
Tarak wins the tournament, tries to say that he wants Titus as his prize, but the warlord refuses.
Now you get an action scene where they fight their way through the gladiator pits in order to escape.
What makes this plan work is that the prison break was impossible from the outside in, but from the inside out, and with all of the most powerful fighters dead or injured, they can just barely make it through.
Titus questions why they wanted him, Kal explains everything, Titus asks Kal which splinter group he was in, and he names one, which Titus says they are all dead but Kal says they aren't because he's still alive.
Titus does in fact know where more rebels are, leading us to the factory world.
Nemesis is a local fighter after Harmada, who is stealing children to raise them since her eggs are all too poluted to hatch.
They go through, Titus says that if they get Harmada to release the children then she'll join them, that it doesn't matter what she does here because the empire is the real cause of her peoples problems.
      She agrees to the deal.
They find Harmada's layer, but Titus tells the others to stay back, that he is going to handle this alone.
Titus fights Harmada for a little while, but instead of killing her, he's really been knocking some sense into her.
He convinces her that what she's doing is wrong, that grief is driving her mad.
Haramada releases the children, but Nemesis still wants to kill her.
Titus reminds her of the deal, that he never said he was going to kill Harmada, and he tells the others that his plan was always to find her.
Now the warlords people find them on this world and before they can get to the ship, the bridge they're on breaks, so it's just her and Harmada together.
They go back to the ship and contact Kal.
Kora wants the password so she can pick them up, but he refuses at first.
Then the warlords men show up with a big cannon and aim it at the ship.
When he does give her the password, she takes off and they see her go above the clouds.
They curse at her, and the cannon points at the walls that the rest of them are hiding behind.
But before it can finish charging, Kora comes back and shoots the cannon, blowing it up along with most of the soldiers, and then opens the bay so they can jump in.
Nemesis almost falls because the bridge breaks even more, but Harmada grabs her with a bit of webbing and pulls her up.
Alright, I'm getting tired of this, and I should really be making dinner right now, so I'm gonna wrap it up.
Now you can go the blood axe world, talk to them, they put Kara on trial for her crimes, but Gunner comes to her defense and even pulls a gun on the leaders.
They laugh at him, and say that he doesn't have the guts because he's quivering, but he shoots, missing them entirely.
They decide to hear him out, and he convinces them that regardless of what happened before, she's changed, and she's brought them two generals who have contacts and could be used to rally more soldiers.
Kora is freed, but everyone is upset Kal never told them who she was, and Gunner was ignorant of the actual implications of what her old job entailed.
Kora talks with the blood axe leaders, telling them that she knows where a destroyer is going to in a month, to the day.
They say she's full of crap, because destroyers warp drives let them go anywhere they want and the generals never tell people in advance where they are going.
She tells them about the drop ship that is programmed to fly back to the destroyer and about the vegetables that Noble is supposed to pick up.
They go back and forth, but eventually suggest that they stick a nuke onboard and to take the destroyer out.
However, Kal suggests that they take a strike force onto the destroyer and take it over, which would be a massive boon to the rebellion and a blow against the empire in material and in pride.
Now the ending of the movie can take place with everyone important going up to the destroyer, because Kal is the one that suggested they bring everyone, and he reveals that his plan was always to gather them up, and that having an ex-commissar made it easy.
Gunner can still have his moment with the bolt gun, but he instead uses it to shoot the chair and break a lock to set Kora free, because wow, the design of that robot is stupid.
Now you have a big fight through the destroyer, and then eventually Kora beats Noble and tosses him out of the airlock with him having a broken visor on his armor.
This way instead of surviving a giant fall down to jagged rocks, he's out in space for a little bit in armor, since the rebels need to flee as soon as they are in control of the destroyer because they sent out a distress signal that is going to bring more destroyers.
      Boom, bam, thank you ma'am.

@@ImTakingYouToFlavorTown I think this is a fantastic effort at fixing a broken premise. I do have some questions though. What is Kal's implied motive for helping Kora? We know of course that he is going to betray her but why does Kora think this guys motivated to support the rebels? In Star Wars Han reluctantly is convinced to join because he loves Leia and forms a bond of friendship with Luke. I feel like Kal has to lie about losing someone important to the Empire. Then reveal later that he believes idealism gets you killed. So he did experience tragedy caused by the Empire but reacted in a very cynical fashion. His reward isn't just money but the promise of a return to Nobility (Hence why he needs to collect multiple people rather than cashing in Kora in the beginning). There would have to be some indication that he was tracking her and hadn't just randomly bumped into her.
He also needs to need Kora for some reason. Like why hasn't he tried to find Titus himself, if he knows where he is? I guess that he argues, laconically, that it is a suicide mission and he has had trouble finding volunteers.
You also still have the major issue of a huge star destroyer needing food. Perhaps it should be a mining outpost that has found a substance required for a powerful weapon or a drug required for interstellar travel (to steal from Dune). This drug will have started to run out causing the Empire to start to crumble at the fringes, that it can no longer reach in force. This would also explain why the Empire has ceased to expand.
I love that Titus recruits Harmada. Genius.

@@wjd23104 Thanks for responding, I'll try to answer some of these.
She believes that Kal is willing to go ahead with the deal of a ship for her services because Titus is a rebel general and thus the single ship is worth at least that much.
As for why he would wait to turn her in, it's because in my rewrite Kora isn't the most wanted person in the galaxy, she's just a former royal guard turned commissar who faked her death.
She certainly has a reputation, but I think that the movie as it is now puts so much on her that Kal isn't justified in trying to up his payday with a handful of other people.
The issue of the destroyer showing up to the village could be solved by a line saying that they are visiting every single farm on the planet, and that Noble went to that one in person so he could make an example of them.
I think that your idea of making it a mining town actually would be much better than food, because what harvest is shown doesn't actually make any sense.
Perhaps Noble is there because someone from the town found some ore and tried to sell it in providence only for word to reach higher up that it had traces of some other far more valuable material in it that they need for their warp drives, and that the reason they stopped expanding is that they are highly limited in the number of warp drives that can be built, with most of the current ships being all that they have and showing their stagnation.
This would make the conflict in the village different, as instead they would be told that they are now under imperial rule and their farms and homes will be destroyed so a mining town can be built overtop of the village.
Then this would make it so Noble needed the 10 weeks and leaves soldiers behind to survey the land and check for deposits.
About why he wouldn't get Titus himself despite knowing where he is the answer is that the warlord who rules the planet is powerful and he likes that he has Titus as a slave so getting him out would be hard.
The existence of a warlord at all would also show that the empire is not doing well and has lost control over some of the world it has, lacking the power to take them back without suffering enough losses that it would be a pointless victory.
Some of the issues with my rewrite is that it is a fairly quick and dirty overview of the entire film that hasn't been fleshed out with character interactions beyond what I thought most important to add.
Having Kal say that he lost people to the empire is also implied by Titus saying that the rebel group Kal is allegedly part of died out, but he says that he is the last member.

One thing I was thinking was that when Kal and Kora head into the secret backroom in the Bar, there should be a couple of armed individuals who immediately raise their guns. Demonstrating that Kal is extremely cautious and acting as a double fake out. It makes it seem like he is going to betray her, only to actually betray her much later in the movie. It also underlines that the breaking of the first rebellion has increased distrust amongst the remaining Rebels.
"The existence of a warlord at all would also show that the empire is not doing well and has lost control over some of the world it has, lacking the power to take them back without suffering enough losses that it would be a pointless victory." I like that.

Even a short, scrappy man could believably have a surprising amount of strength/speed and ability to command these scenes. I'm about Sophia's height and have good strength and flexibility which just makes the many-on-one scenes less believable, unless she were to have cybernetic enhancements or magic or the Force. She doesn't. Just plot armor.
I hate it, because it's a waste of a good physical role and a waste of what Sophia COULD bring--her background is in dance, I believe. I wouldn't mind a lead who has to rely on the environment, reflexes, and using opponents strengths against them.

Between Zack Snyder and James Gunn. James Gunn has proven to be a Better storyteller/Character writer. He and Zack Synder worked on the Dawn of the Dead remake Together. And that film shows that James knew how to present the Characters, while Zack had more of a Visual influence on the film and it’s Darker tone.
And that’s what Everyone has noticed! James Gunn knows how to give depth to Characters while Snyder has always been a Surface-Level Director! Always working on making projects that have preset Characters, like Most of the DC cast, Frank Miller’s 300, and Watchmen. He’s able to do action and camera work, but he is a Victim to his own early Teen “EdgyLord” philosophy!
And it goes to show that he is Woefully over his head in helming his Own Original Film! And Rebel Moon is just that.

@@freddiejones9713Strange that you should would think that, since he had a very specific criticism -- much smaller women (with no known superpowers) easily beating many larger, trained fighters, strains suspension of disbelief.
That doesn't equal "resentment towards women in action roles".
I would add another thing. Not only does it strain suspension of disbelief, but it thoroughly sabotages dramatic tension.
The point of having a character facing off against a bigger opponent, or several opponents, is to create serious dramatic tension -- you are to understand that the character faces a crucial situation, will have to fight like the very he11 just to have the merest hope of surviving!
Then zapbangbam, the hero easily wins without even breaking a sweat. Anticlimax, viewer cheated of the dramatic payoff.
Think of it like this. The character is hanging on the face of a cliff by his very fingernails. Dramatic music, tension builds, his hands slip! And he falls six inches and lands on his feet on the big, wide, safe ledge that it turns out was just below him.
It's just bad writing, so why do it? Apparently because the modern girl-boss character has to be shown to always be easily superior to any challenge (ie, 5exual politics). If this is the reason, it instead just waters down the strong female action hero because it shows that there are never any real stakes. The movie is just set to Easy Mode for her.
Edit: Which is why older female action heroes like Ripley are massively better -- Aliens was certainly *not* set to Easy Mode just to make her look good!

It is a terrible fight scene for several other reasons the reviewer stated but who cares whether Kora is a 130 pound woman or 350 pound man? They have guns, a five year old can kill a 350 pound man with a gun and a bit of luck. I wouldn't be able to hit someone as hard as Amanda Nunes. @@m1hfn2f I can't tell you how much I appreciate the honest feedback. Perhaps my words were chosen poorly but the sentiment is all the same. I am still growing into this channel so comments like this are invaluable learning opportunities for me moving forward. Thank you for the sub and the open dialogue, and I will be bringing you another bad movie review sometime later this week.

Too late. Loved seeing this movie 6 times. Haters and critics can suck it 🤷‍♂️
