Also on a side note to the Rorsach stuff, I always took the final pages as a testament to his character. Even after he made a big deal out of how much he hated the people of the city and how he wouldn't save them, when the chips were down he decided to die for them. Personally I always took it as Rorsach being at least somewhat a good person behind all his misanthropy and trauma.

I think way too many people overlook the significance of Rorschach's confrontation with the prostitute mother late in the story. She's nothing like his own mother, and he sees that.

@@LevantineR1 Yeah, that was my take from that scene too. At first he saw her as being like his mother but the second he called her a whore and she said "Don't say that, my kids don't know" is when it was clear she wasn't. His mom did nothing to hide this fact from him, he has caught her and has had nightmares about it, meanwhile this mom did and was actually trying to protect her kids. I imagine that's why he leaves, he realizes the land lady isn't the type of person he assumed.

I think the reason Rorschach became so popular is because 1) his mask is cool & 2) back in the 80s Alan Moore was a good enough writer that he knew to make his characters interesting even if he didn't like them. Rorschach isn't just a cartoon strawman who gets off at the thought violating civil rights. He's a flawed, traumatized person who thinks he's doing the right thing. That's why Watchmen is so popular and stayed popular as long as it has.

    • @KrazyKat007
      @KrazyKat007 Год назад +142

    • @PepsiMan666
      @PepsiMan666 Год назад +124

Frankly, I think Alan's recent quotes about Rorschach is historical revisionism. I think Moore is a loon but he's not an incompetent writer. I refuse to believe he screwed up making a character that represents everything he reportedly despises into such a sympathetic character. I think he started getting backlash by his ancap peers and started this story about how Rorschach's positive reception was unintended.

    • @CrashWeezerman
      @CrashWeezerman Год назад +87

@@PepsiMan666 I think he always intended for Rorschach to be wrong, but he left it open for the reader to decide if they agreed. Alan Moore used to do that with stories like V for Vendetta which he said it was up to the reader to decide whether or not V was right.

    • @thecrimsoncrown555
      @thecrimsoncrown555 Год назад +78

I agree and there are scenes in the comic that support this. The biggest one being the interactions Rorschach has with the Psychiatrist while he is in prison. The psychiatrist is first shown as a self centered guy who only wants to interview Rorschach to further his own career instead of actually helping him. However, after listening to Rorschach, the psychiatrist is shown to become more sympathetic to others to the point where he is trying to help strangers before the squid attack.
The second instance is where Rorschach returns to his apartment to get his costume and ends up confronting the lady who was lying about him on the news. Instead of dispensing "Justice" as an unhinged extremists would have, he instead walks away and lets the issue go. That was a moment of self restraint that a character who was not suppose to be a hero would not have done. So ya, Alan Moore is just trying to do some political backtracking. @@PepsiMan666

It's dumb just by the fact that Manhattan is supposed to be so far gone in terms of being a "human" that one would have to ask, why is he even here? Manhattan was barely holding on to his humanity and was at the point where he really didn't care anymore. He specifically said at the end of the comic/movie that he was gonna leave earth and stay out of human affairs.
To even have Manhattan come back in such a short time just spits on the original material. Even if he did return, there is zero reason he'd take the form of normal person. In all his time since gaining his powers he never altered his blue form to try and fit in as a normal person. Alan Moore created a character to make fun of the uncompromising hero by making him a murderous psychopath that refuses to ever change in anyway. Then makes him somehow one of the more morally upstanding people in the book and is perspective is completely understandable. Not to mention gives him a backstory where he feels completely justified in how he turned out. His worst traits are either implied (or told to us) like his racism and sexism or don't seem that bad in such a horrible world.
Then his best traits are highlighted throughout most of the story since he's the only one trying to do anything. He's the only person to not give into apathy and is still trying. His ideals are SO strong that he sticks to his guns and never compromises even in the face of Armageddon. Then is not only surprised that some people like the character but is angry that they do.
Dude is either salty that people connect more with his parody character or believes they morally incorrect. Either way I'm happy cause Alan Moore is insane and it's fun to see him freak out about people not interrupting the character he wanted. Jean Cocteau once wrote:
"The worst tragedy for a poet is to be admired through being misunderstood."
Alan Moore wrote Rorschach as a parody of Steve Ditko's objectivist and the heroes he used as his mouthpiece: Mr. A and The Question, both of whom were insane fascists.
The reason Moore's character was so well-received while Ditko's characters were savaged is because Ditko couldn't back up his characters with things like good writing or characterization.
Consider that Spider-Man, Ditko's greatest achievement, is the complete antithesis of his own personal views and if Ditko had had his way with him, he would've ended up like the other characters he wrote: mocked and condemned to obscurity, at least until a competent writer got a hold of them.
As much as Moore hated Ditko's views and characters, he refused to settle on making a blatant, on-the-nose parody and instead gave Rorschach the characterization Ditko refused to give his own, because he refused to compromise his own principles. Sound familiar?
It's not Moore's fault for being a good writer.
This is same thing that happened with the DC character Lobo, who was written specifically to parody the hyper-violent edgy antihero archetype that characters like Rorschach, The Comedian, The Punisher, Deadpool and Frank Miller's Batman would eventually popularize in the 90's. Ironically, despite having been written as an ironic, satirical character, fans took the satire at face value and he became just as popular as the antiheroes he was made to mock.
If a writer has to blatly announce his views on a character or idea with a big fat sign rather than with an engaging and entertaining story, then that says more about the reader's intelligence than it does about the writer's skills.
In a rare twist, Rorschach's popularity is in equal parts because of Moore's writing skills as much as it is in spite of said skills.

I know we talk about how this show wasted Regina King, but Wokemen also wastes Hong Chau as an actress. She was amazing in The Menu and The Whale; she's an incredible actress, but she's wasted as this generic villain who just wants to beat Dr. Manhattan and take his powers.
I also want to bring something up, too: it's very subtle, but Watchmen does imply that Laurie wanted to take her father's mantle as the Comedian in the final scene of the comic, a after she and Night Owl visit Sally Jupiter; she talks about wanting a new costume that included a mask and guns. It's a very brief line, but it is there. What I don't get is why Laurie would have such a hate boner against vigilantes when the end of Watchmen outright states that she and Night Owl are still acting as costumed superheroes, which was why they had to assume new identities to begin with, which itself doesn't make sense, since I imagine the US Government would want to keep tabs on the US's former nuclear deterant and ace-in-the-whole. It doesn't make sense to me.
Also, despite Watchmen's 1985 being pushed forward technologically, you see fuck all trace of that in this show. Where are the floating blimps and electric cars? What happened to the signs of Utopia that were in the end of the comic? Why would Dr. Manhattan leave Earth and Laurie when he's going to come back to Earth just so he can bang a black chick, and why did he have to make himself black in order to do that?
EDIT: As a black man, thank Christ someone finally addressed all that shit behind the Tulsa Massacre. A few minutes of research would reveal that Wokemen's interpreation of the massacre and people's lack of information on it has been skewed in order to incite anger in woke people. Thank you for clarifiying that.

If it helps, I believe that Dan and Laurie got caught at some point and where strongarmed into being government agents. Dan said no (Hence why you don't see him in this show.) Laurie said yes.
As for the technology, in universe they tried to get rid of that Dr. Manhattan made. Out of fear that it was extremely carcinogenic. Remember the last time the general public saw Dr. Manhattan he was on a TV show and was accused of giving a bunch of people cancer where he had a big freak out over it. You do see bits of the alt-tech thing going on. Ever notice that all the computers are old MS-DOS ones from the 80's? But we can add the fact that technology stagnated due to people growing to reliant on Dr. Manhattan to the ever-growing pile of actually interesting things this show could have covered.

Alan legite didn’t realize how much better of a character Rorschach is for being a nutcase with a very awful personality, it shows he still knows what is right, at no point do you see him go after gay people or minorities, he targets child predators, people you cannot sympathize with, it’s insane to think he tried to make him unlikeable but gave him such strong conviction.

He's not a nutcase. And he isn't racist either. His internal turmoil and self loathing does not synergize with his moral compass, decision making, or thought process. His mind is like a living hell that he lives in. He still manages to be functional to the point of solving complex crimes and interacting with his team members as a professional crime fighter. He's not a bad guy. His subconscious is violent but that doesn't mean he agrees with anything it says. That wouldn't make him crazy either. He eats uncooked beans because he never got over the guilt of losing that girl and he hates himself for it. Every action he commits to outside of wearing his mask is an act of self loathing. He wants to die, but not at the expense of him not being around to take out awful people. He took his mask off when Manhattan killed him because he was finally able to redeem himself as himself without the mask. He stood up to a God as the man he always wanted to be but couldn't let free

I think like the rest of the crimebusters/minutemen Rorschach was intended to a flawed kook whose simplistic moral and worldview just doesn't in the real world.
Rorschach is just more flawed, repulsive and demented than the rest because Moore doesn't respect him or what he represents.
But to Moore's credit as a writer Rorschach - while a send up of Mr A - doesn't feel like a caricature because too much of a pro to leave him as that.
I think Loli right in that the context of the world around him that make Rorschach more... admirable than Moore intended.
The one way he could be considered "The villain" depends on what you believe the effects of his journal is:
If you believe it's the wetch in Ozymandias and set the dominoes to nuclear war then, yeah, Rorschach the dumb arsehole who ruined everything and dooms the world.
On the other hand if you believe Ozymandias plan is vain deluded madness I duded by doom mongering hysteria and a God complex then the Journal exposes the bastard as the mass murder he is. In that context Rorschach actions and instinct to not compromise the truth - for all his sins - is ultimate meaningful.
      Virtuous.
      Heroic even.
Whether the world knows or a small bunch of kooks.
Or maybe the journal has no effect.
That Rorschach life amount nothing more than killing a tiny percent of the world's criminal.

Listen, try learning about Communism from actual Communists.
Communism is, based on my base knowledge of Marx, the aspirational "end goal". The end goal being a STATELESS society. By definition, Anarchist.
What you're talking about is just a Socialist state, or more accurately, "State Capitalist".
The whole point of Communism is for the WORKERS to own the means of production.
Not private individuals or corporations. And not governments.
And even your perception of the "tyranny" of Socialist countries is a product of Western Propaganda.
Every nation creates propaganda, and you are certainly not immune to it.
And if you wanna talk about the tyranny imposed by Socialist states, then I'd ask you if you're willing to apply the same level of criticism to Capitalist/Imperialist states.
Because Capitalism has a death rate too. And I can say with some confidence, it's higher than Communism. By several magnitudes.

Something that made me incredibly sad when I went from the comics and movie to the 2019 Watchmen dumpster fire was that there was no longer any ambiguity. You can't have a character like Rorschach anymore, one that is a hilariously terrible stereotype strawman to some while being a legitimate hero with good morals to others. It's so painfully obvious how you're supposed to feel about characters now. There's no room for interpretation or seeing the good in bad characters or vice versa. Morality is a hardened pipe with which the bad writers hit you repeatedly over the head. You're not allowed to question, you're not allowed to think for yourself, you're not allowed to like the bad guy. You're only allowed to have one opinion, and that's the one the writers and director want you to have. An integral part of art is being lost.
It's no longer about being posed with a question and left to think about it in uncomfortable silence. It's now about being screamed at by a mob in a way that makes you uncomfortable. Those are two very different things that "artists" today don't seem to understand.

Since this was before radio was really viable as a method of communication, aircraft communication had to be made with signal flares or by dropping literal written notes inside of canisters onto the earth below, so to people on the ground, it may have been perceived as dropping bombs.

My man you nailed it at the end. I've said this during the star wars sequel crap. Entertainment should be treated like a novelty you put to the side. It's not your life to consume something just because you have love for an ip. That's why these companies buy these ips in the first place, to strongarm you into coming to them for that specific ip. Years of fans complaining about their franchises being ruined and I always ask the same thing "Then why are you still paying attention to them?"
The usual response I get is that it's to stop others from feeding into the bad reboots, but I keep coming back to the same point. Just leave it alone. The amount of dedication fans have to franchises is what feeds into the success for these rehashes of old works. You get mad enough to keep an eye out for what they're doing, try to convince people not to watch it, usually leads to hate watching it to justify being mad at it or to prove you gave it a chance. Then you spend the rest of the time clashing with people who defend the soulless media that are only passionate about getting to fight someone over a damn movie.
My belief on things is that you can't become so attached to something you can't let it go. If you dislike some new spin on an old brand, just walk away. Don't waste your time fuming or arguing, because you're showing that you can't ignore a piece of fiction. The trend of hating the rehashes while consuming every piece of bad new media and calling everyone else sheep makes me sick.

While I get what you mean by Doctor Manhatan fitting thematically, it really does ruin Ozymandias' plan.
The whole reason it was a giant alien squid, basically an unknowable eldritch abomination, rather than anything more tangible, even a Klatuu style giant robot or something else to that effect, was becaus there is no arguing with a squid. There is no bargaining, there is no solution to this kind of interdimensional threat, other than global cooperation for the sake of preparing for the worst scenario, as it serves to people as proof that at any moment, the most unexpected, borderline apocalyptic thing can happen to anyone, to any country. The only way to respond to that, is to try and establish the best possible means to prepare for every scenario for the sake of avoiding human extinction the next time something like this happens, which means putting away the nukes and working together, becaus you're going to need your worst enemy's help against enemies you can't see coming and do not understand.
More importantly, the squid dies. They can be killed.
Whatever that thing was, whatever reason it came here for, whoever sent it if it was sent at all, can be beat! It looks to be a herculean effort to do it before such a thing wipes humanity out, but it is blatantly possible, because it died on its first attack.
On the other hand, Doctor Manhattan is a man. He's a person. He is a terrifying person, akin to a God to most people, but that is exactly why he cannot fulfill the same role.
If Doctor Manhattan attacked the entire world without warning, and without even giving a reasoning, then the reasonable response is not global cooperation. The reasonable response is figuring out what angered God, and trying to appease them.
Worse, not only is Doctor Manhattan repeatedly, explicitly established to be an All-American God in mutliple ways, from "The Superman/God exists, and he is American" through his involvement with the Vietnam War, he was just recently very publically attacked by the American media who pulled such a vile stunt against him, that the last thing anyone knows of Doctor Manhattan before the attack, is that he got so pissed at how the media cornered him, that he disappeared.
This means the entire world has reason to blame America for the global attacks, which in the movie are not limited to just one American city, cleanly putting the blame for all the dead people globablly at America's foot for creating Doctor Manhattan, but on top of that, God is angry. And God has been very publically angered by 'the capitalist pigs in the lying American media'.
And you know how I brought up that the squid can be killed?
The only thing everyone knows about Doctor Manhattan is that he is basically as invulnerable as he is all-powerful. He single handedly won a war, where every conceivable thing short of nuclear bombs were deployed straight at him, and all of it did absolutely nothing. The dude can change his size, multiply himself as many times as he wants, teleport... Really, it is painfully obvious this is not someone you can kill, no matter what you throw at them. Him being immortal isn't really a big revelation at the story. It's simply an extremely obvious fact, that sets up that the reason real reason Ozymadias pulled the "same accident" trick wasn't so he could kill Doctor Manhattan, but just to distract him briefly, because "the world's smartest man is no more threat to me than its smartest ant" is a surprise to no one in that world.
The logical next thing to happen after this series of events is not the world coming together in a giant prayer circle and singing a song of love.
The logical next step is the total, global cooperative annhilation of the United States of America, for not only did they birth a vengeful God, but they are for all that anyone could see, the primary reason said God is angry right now.
The logical step, is to find whatever they can think of to appease Doctor Manhattan, and do it.
Because global cooperation cannot beat Doctor Manhattan.
Unlike the squid, there is no vain hope that they can prepare a weapon to kill the next one before it can do its damage.
There is no sense of safety that maybe these things are limited to only one showing up at a time, only being able to do so much, and you can focus on relief efforts in the aftermath.
Doctor Manhattan is a hopeless foe. Doctor Manhattan is for all intents and purposes the Biblical God in this world in terms of power, and as of Ozy's stunt, in psychology as well, unleashing a new flood in the form of a global attack to show his wrath.
    You can't cooperate against God.
You can only kneel, and do what you think would make God happy.
This is my one big complaint with the Zack Snyder adaptation. It's a fantastic movie in almost all other regards, but due to this one change, Ozymandias' plan falls apart, because with the Squid, there is reason to think that the wake-up call for the fragility of human existence would be followed by nations working together. Replacing the squid with Doctor Manhattan can only lead to a new age of Crusades.
