    Fun fact. Satoshi Kon didn't read Complete Metamorphosis. The author made a script and Kon read that, and he didn't care for it a whole lot. So he asked for permission to change it, and the studio agreed as long as he kept the pop idol and the stalker as major characters. So Perfect Blue is very different from the source material by design. This is the complete opposite to his relationship with Paprika, a novel he adored and which he wanted to adapt from the moment he read it. Funnily enough, it's author could only think of Kon as a viable director for the job, and neither of them knew what the other thought at the moment of their chance meeting in an event that celebrated the release of Tokyo Godfathers.

      Bridget Hoffman had done great work, though I think she was miscast as Shinobu in Love Hina. She plays the young, sweet, and innocent character of the cast, and yet the woman's voice is very sensual and sultry. Makes for a weird juxtaposition.

    I’m not entirely convinced it’s punishing perversion, per se. Rather, I think Kon is brutally honest about the state of the entertainment industry, at least in Japan. I haven’t seen Millennium Actress or Paprika, but I remember this one episode from Paranoia Agent dealing with an animation company working on the series for the little pink dog, and it was _so_ messed up. But I never once thought to myself “that can’t be real.”

      Perfect Blue to me is a good example of grounded horror, even with the more abstract elements. The cycle of obsession is a very real threat that can happen to anybody.
      The horror doesn't have to be some monster to be scary, sometimes all you need is to remind people that the average person can be fucked up on their own.

  • @GamerGarm
    @GamerGarm 11 месяцев назад +33

    For me, the scene with the psychiatrist is the actual reveal because they reference Mima being a fake and the "character's name" being the real one and specifically mention that the girl pretending to be Mima imagines her past trauma as part of a drama to protect her from facing reality.
    This is text book defense mechanism.
    For my interpretation, Rumi is how she actually really is in her adult life, an overweight middle-aged woman that is mentally stuck in her "idol" persona that she wants to protect because the reality is that she was graped and everything went downhill.

    That feeling when you cover something and either it or it's source material are nearly impossible to find until AFTER you just about wrapped everything up is real. Weirdly it's tied to when RUclipsrs talk about it, which suggests they have some market drive.
    Like Best Friends Play are directly responsible for Metal Wolf Chaos XD getting released.
    It's nice to see when companies realize "oh, there's an audience for this. Let's make some money." Instead of letting properties die in obscurity.

    Rest in peace Satoshi Kon. Dude left his impact on the world and inspired it... for better and worse. I must say, though I haven't seen it personally, it has aged like wine. What an October treat.
    edit: I reached the 11 minute mark and out of respect of the video's forewarning, I think I will go watch Perfect Blue and come back to watch the rest. Putting it in my watch later playlist. I hope that is okay.

      I only found out about Kon's death after I had already watched Paprika and Perfect Blue. I was just looking for what he was working on at the time and the news of his death really shocked me. Honestly, the fact that he died so young and from such a terrible illness makes it one of the most tragic deaths in the entertainment industry for me

  • @officernealy
    @officernealy 11 месяцев назад +28

    Perfect Blue is the only animated horror I've seen actually work as a genuine horror movie beyond individual scenes from things like The Brave Little Toaster or The Black Cauldron. I think it's because Kon is a master of bending reality as a means to telling stories. This doesn't even include horror as he does that with Millennium Actress (drama) and Paprika (sci-fi). Perfect Blue works so well as a horror that I successfully was able to convince my "you-couldn't-pay-me-to-watch-animated-anything" family to give it a chance and now its one of our regulars for Halloween binges.

    Ngl, while I've never been able to sit down and watch this on my own, I have always felt it like a haunting enigma. It also brings up certain questions when it comes to media consumption, I find. Like there are fans of this film, and I recall one instance of someone making fan art that could be like a contradiction to the infamous scene you brought up: like are we allowed to enjoy this kind of content considering if it had happened in the movie, it would be dragging the event through the fire? Heck, I legit wonder if it's contradictory to buy merchandise from this film considering it talks about exploitation of said idols. Like I would like the existence of Mima content, but would it be messed up to own such paraphernalia? It honestly makes me think.

    • @LuisSierra42
      @LuisSierra42 11 месяцев назад +2

      Capitalism consumes everything. One of the main messages of The Matrix movies is to rebel against capitalism but in the end, The Matrix is just a franchise that is exploited for money. I had trouble with this contradiction for a while but in reality you either learn to live under capitalism or you move to a forest or something. I accept the message from Perfect Blue but I would also buy its merchandise, even just in order to keep it in mind

    I really do miss the era of horror/extremely experiemntal anime like this. Not trying to be a, "Old thing better than new thing" curmudgeon, but the lack of any true horror anime nowadays kinda hurts me because anime as a medium has so much untapped potential with the genre. Still though, even if something like this never happens again, I'm at least glad that Perfect Blue existed in the first place.

    The bigger problem we have now with parasocial relationships on the Internet is not their existence, it's sleazy Internet personalities encouraging them for their own benefit. It came to a head with OnlyFans e-girls fleecing desperate dudes out of their money by giving them false hopes of a true relationship, and even VTubers, who were lauded at the beginning for offering something refreshing and different, having actual talent as entertainers and respect for their fans, decided to exploit the gold mine (coughRushiacough).

      Those user made that decision on their own. The same with VTubers. You’re putting the stock in the wrong dumbass. Dumbasses will always be around to sell anything that can ease pain and stress. A bigger dumbass buys it, knowing that it doesn’t help them or it makes them poorer.

    Omg the story about Perfect Blue somewhat reminds me of the tragic events that occurred with the famous Mexican American singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez that got murdered by a woman named Yolanda Saldívar who was not only an obsessed fan of Selena, but also became her manager for her fan club. If you want more backstory for this about this, I suggest looking up documentaries for it. While not the exact same story, it is quite scary how people in real life can be obsessed fans who become insane and murderous to the people they idolize when things don't stay the way they want them to stay.

    Another reason why she saved rumi because she understood that rumi isn't evil but mental ill that needed help.

    I ran into this dude a few times MONTHS AGO on counter strike that had the stabbing in front of the projector scene as his steam profile pic, and I could only really make out the bigger face and thought it was Ghost In The Shell or something. When I asked about it he said its "Perfect Blue" and I replied oh ok I think ive heard of that or seen it. Had no idea what it was until I watched this video (which I paused when I got the spoiler warning and watched the movie then resumed this video!). Even crazier YEEEEARS AGO I had a similar experience with a Berserk pfp but on RUclips (which led me to become a huge fan), and the only reason I kno of TheAlmightyLoli is because of his massively in depth videos on Berserk....
    What a small very connected world huh?
    Great video yet again man, and thanks for exposing me to Satoshi Kon and some more anime thats actually worth while, gonna watch the one Inception bit now.

    I ache for more cinema like this. Where you suddenly realize what that bucket of grey matter is up there for … INTERPRETATION.
    Rewatching and revisiting are the earmarks of a good relationship with anyone, or THING.
    🙏 for revisiting this video. Proof that remakes aren’t all bad ideas.

    The only parts that let me down were the bits that focus on text or other written things because I don't have the first clue on how to read Japanese, usually in some cases the Dub will put English text onscreen during bits like that but it wasn't the case for the version I just watched. Still it was a pretty good watch overall, some of the style and animation did look Really good and fluid in some scenes.

    There's a recurring theme of images and eyes. Mima's image is constantly reproduced through mirrors and screens. And all the men who are killed by Rumi have their eyes pierced because their "crime" was perversing Mima with her gaze. Even the photographer is castrated and then has his eyes attacked. It's a revenge on the visual.
    The idea of exploration also turned on Kon himself. Remember the strip club scene? Kon put it in at first because the movie was going to be an OVA and he knew that sex sold. Of course, it was thematically significant, since the movie acknowledged it is exploitative of Mima and no one wanted to do it except the higher ups, and everyone else is really uncomfortable during the scene. Well, when the OVA turned into a movie proyect Kon decided to keep it, and years later he said that he was regretful over the scene. That it was "too much". So, he, just like his characters, regretted the introduction of that scene, one which was added for marketing in both reality and in the fiction. It's such an interesting way of metafiction.

    My mom rented this for me when I was like...14? It was my birthday, so she let me rent 2 videos, and one was Perfect Blue (the other was a hentai VHS called My Fair Masseuse, which was out in the open in the 'anime' section, not in the 18+ section lol). I think I got maybe 10 minutes in and got bored of it.
    I should probably sit down and watch it finally before finishing this video (have it paused at the spoiler warning), since I can probably see the value in a movie like this, unlike my 14 year old self.

    Right, just ordered a DVD for my mum's Christmas present. After falling in love with Korean cinema it's time she got some experience with Japanese cinema.
    Only issue was the cheapest one I could find was an import from Thailand, & it's not region free. Well I guess it's finally time for her to get familiar with the world of import cinema.

    I went into this movie completely blind, and boy was I not ready for Satoshi Kon's mindfuck editing. Ever since it's been one of my favorite psychological thrillers. Hitchcock would love this shit.
    As for Inception, Christopher Nolan had written the script for it around the year 2000, but he didn't have the clout back then to get any production companies to risk funding it, so he had to wait a few Batmans until he could make the movie he'd always wanted. I would bet money though that upon seeing Paprika, he was like "OH SHIT I SHOULD HAVE DONE INCEPTION SOONER!"

    After thinking about my own interpretation is a Struggle for her own Identity
    After casting aside being idol and being what she known as
    She essentially becomes an NPC trying to form a new identity as an Actress but it the reality becomes warped as her idol image follows as if that is who she truly is and if the way her Identity is portrayed in fiction blurs it with reality
    Her own thoughts of being the killer is a question of her Identity and another aspect if that who is she truly and the acting shoots keep bringing this question on if she is a cheap adult star of if that is how she wants her identity to be portrayed as
    Her saving her Manager would be preserving the memories of what her identity used to be pure as not having it destroyed and comes out of it with her new sense of self and holding her own identity firm with her

    Not sure I'd call this "Japans best thriller" but it wasn't bad, I genuinely wasn't expecting the reveal to be what it was but I also wasn't dieing to figure out exactly what was going on.
    This is basically one of those Anime I'm glad I finally watched but I don't see myself thinking "yeah, that was awesome I'm going to watch it again."🤷‍♂️
