Star Wars is Dead, Let it DIE
This is a brief video essay on why I believe Disney Star Wars has no soul and should be left for dead. We will always have the OT, the prequels, countless books, games and toys and of course the memories. It is time for us to move on to something better (maybe something YOU create).
No, this is not a review of The Acolyte. I have not watched it and I am not sure that I want to subject myself to that abuse.
Thank you so much for the support. I am grateful.

Godzilla Minus One: Movie Of The Year.
11:24 the only possible thing I could say is I'm just waiting around for the second and final season of andor. call it what you will, it and perhaps rogue one are the only bits of disney star wars that have actually made me feel something. either way, after the show concludes I don't think I'll be sticking around for anything else. Also just wanna say your punching way above your weight with this video. the quality is top notch stuff and you should be proud!
Rogue One wasn't bad, although I haven't watched in a while. That being said I haven't watched Andor as I don't wanna get Disney plus, but there have been so many people who say it's good I may do a little sailing. Appreciate the kind words and support. Took a break but getting back in the swing of things.
Your scripted videos are really good. I'm from a tiny town. When The Phantom Menace came out, the nearest town with a movie theater was about 40 miles away. We drove over and hung out on the sidewalk with hundreds of other SW fans for hours. The packed theater was like a party. Finally at midnight the lights go down and the movie started. We had an absolute blast. By the time Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith came out we were a bit older. Families and work, distance. We couldn't go opening night but we all did manage to get together and see them in the theater. Fast forward to 2015. Now the kids are old enough. The Force Awakens opened on a Thursday night as i recall. Most of 'the guys' made it and we were texting our one friend who lives several states away. Lol...then...well... 25 minutes in: "I liked this better when it was called A New Hope." 40 minutes in: "They're going to kill Han Solo." "YOU SHUT YOUR FILTHY MOUTH!" "No, for real, he's the Obi-wan of this movie. This is A New Hope." 70 minutes in: "I mean, it's a shittier version of A New Hope. Oooh. Death Star but bigger." At the fight scene: "I swear to God Luke Skywalker better catch that lightsa--....nope." As we were walking out no one really even said anything. One of us said, "Well, we saw the new Star Wars." When The Last Jedi came out we didn't even ask each other about going. I never even watched it. Same for the last one. One sec. Sorry. I literally had to search for the name of it. None of us even talked about The Rise of Skywalker. No one was interested. The storytelling was just...meh. Several of us have daughters. We weren't sitting there trashing women. It's just the characters and the story were unengaging and recycled and lazily plopped in front of us like we would simply consume whatever they shoveled out, and like it. I have no intention of watching any more of the Disney stuff. You know, back when Disney bought SW, we had a group text about a rumored Obi-wan movie. A rumored Han Solo movie. A movie about how they got the plans for the Death Star. Big budget TV shows. We were fairly excited. Well, excited as 30-something family men can get for a space movie. We all knew the thrill was gone and it had fizzled out as we walked to our cars after The Force Awakens. Anyway, this is the longest RUclips comment I've probably ever written. If you made it this far, imagine it's a long, lame title crawl with a jaunty John Williams number playing behind it.
This is an experience so many of us share. I can almost feel this comment because I lived it, too. Its a testament to what real Star Wars means to us and how it brought so many people together. I hope that sharing REAL Star Wars with your children brings you all incredible joy for years to come. Cheers, and I am very grateful for your support.
@@UglyReview Real Star Wars and real Lord of the Rings.
@@Cautionary_Tale_Harris Amen, brother.
This way that i will watch the star wars Alkolite or Acolyte. Wouldn't pay 12.99 a month for disney+. I would rather pay for a Bottle of Rum for 12.99, waste my money on disney+, i can get a few groceries for 12.99 at King Soopers, so thank you, no wasting my money on a disney+ app for me, watching the star wars Alkolite or Acolyte or however it is spelled, would be like watching a very bad B movie, that wish haven't wasted money on and the time to watch it.
I was talking about this movie to my siblings and I told them that Zach Snyders way of filmmaking is better suited to low budget video game cutscenes

As a cop I've seen multiple gang members set 2+ clips of brass on the ground and didn't hit a single fucking fool. No walls no reason to miss but holy shit they did
Star wars story was childish and I was done with the stupidity in 1977.
Even the Riddick movies are better than this bs
Excellent analysis and review. From a new subscriber. 🖖🏽
Really appreciate the support. Working on the part 2 review this very moment. Its gonna be a real doozy.
The insanity in the Woke is that they want all diversity (of body and mind) to be exactly the same shade of gray. To repeat the same action and to expect different results is insanity. Aka the Woke.
Zack the Hack Snyder FLOPS again and again and again...
The lead role is played by a man. It is a female impersonator, aka soy boy.
Great video! 🙂
i like how people miss the point, which is the point ironically. the movie is a dire warning if things continue. the problem is that people are addicted to propaganda and desperately want confirmation bais. people go into this movie trying to see a political message and not the actual destruction caused by that behavior. regardless of your political views, it's going to be a disaster. we'll all lose in the end. the president could be trump or biden. just realize that you're not just killing the president. your killing democracy and the country as we knew it. you have been warned. that's the message. 👍
But did we really need a movie to tell us that if we keep fighting we're going to kill each other? You could have that message with a better story, with more character depth. Why should I care about the characters?
This review can be summed up as “right wing film review were is angry that film does not support right wing Civil War cause and completely misses the point of the film.”
Whats the point of the film? What's right wing about the review?
@@UglyReview I didn’t say that the review was right wing. I said you are right wing reviewer. As for the point of the film is it basically sure as Civil War sucks. And using journals as the vessels for us to do that, from gives us as the audience, the most unbiased way of watching the film. You can make arguments about the journalist and their biases which is 100% fair. And you can critique modern journalism. But you don’t critique, modern journalism and you don’t acknowledge that all four journalist are using their own bases in the film. As for needing to know the cause of the war we as the viewers don’t because it doesn’t matter what the constant Civil War sucks for the people who are experience it. Like I said, this review could be some down as right wing reviewer is angry because a movie about a second Civil War doesn’t Support is view.
Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback.
Honestly, the fact they didn’t pick a side, added four warring sides instead of the actual two they kept it as general and non-specific as possible to ensure no one could complain about it, or every side could see themselves as the “good guys”. if they hadn’t and they did pick a side, this movie would’ve never been made.
You may be right and I feel I need to clarify something. When I say "pick a side" I don't care who it is, I just wish Garland would've had more conviction with what he was trying to say. To your point it seems he didn't want to out of fear they'd piss off half the audience, which it seems they did anyway.
8:16 you take that back that is Pablo Escobar himself you’re talking about plata o plomo
Lol. It's actually quite surprising how much they look alike.
Swear to God, every single review for this movie has the same argument doesn’t go into depth about the war and not enough action scenes. You monkeys have to have fucking explosions and everything for you to actually enjoy something without understanding what a story is.
So, the only real point was that journalists (MSM News) are the good guys... and redneck Americans are dangerous people. Typical Hollywood messaging even if they tried to camouflage it.
The funny thing about this review is that you are saying how its about nothing because it does not pick a side, but had it picked a side you would have thought it was shit or great depending on what side it took. The point of the movie is that no side wins if there was a situation like this. And in war it is like that.
That's a pretty hefty assumption. I guess we will wait and see if there's a directors cut where they pick a side and then I can pick a side, too. The suspense is killing me.
@uglyreview I don’t see why you think that he’s making a hefty assumption here when you start off this review talking about DEI and wokeness. It’s pretty clear that you have a favorite in this war that you want to see win. And you’re just angry that the movie doesn’t tell you if those are the ones that win or not.
the key is, I think, keep talking, have an open mind and see what is going on. It's great vision of Garland, because he picks no side. Comment all the way from Belgium. We need a steady America in the world, not a divided, we need a democracy that works! Greetings and all the good! ❤
So talking about DEI and wokeness translates to what side I want to see win in a fictional story? I don't give a hoot who Garland may have chosen to win with a more complete action movie, I just would have preferred a complete action movie to what we received. I completely understand the message that it doesn't matter who starts or wins the war because we would all suffer, but there are ways of getting that message across that are far more entertaining, and that includes giving us a complete story. Thank you for watching and I appreciate the feedback.
It does kind of give the game away. In the same way that when people on the left, watch the movie complain that they don’t get to see that the communist win. And if you did understand the point of this movie and your review doesn’t actually sure that you understand the point of this movie because watching your review shoes that you did not understand the point of this movie, so maybe what you need to do is take them this video and redo that review to show that you actually understood the movie was
TLDR: bad review, feels like guy didnt understand the movie Long version: This review feels incredibly tone-deaf, like instead of analyzing the movie you just say what happens in it and then go "but they never told me who i shouldve be cheering for". Especially the point about glorifying media is outlandish, the movie clearly establishes just how morally dubious the practice of photojournalism is. Lines like when Jessie asks Lee "will you take a picture of me when i get shot?" and the monotone "what do you think" response from Lee says everything - they care about getting the "money shot" and justify it with "i thought i was sending a clear message home not to do this", when in the end all they want is to get the last interview with a dictator - personal fame. At no point is the group of journalists established as "heroes", they never do anything heroic, they go around a war-torn united states taking pictures of men and women dying and ultimately profit off of getting the bloodiest and most horifying picture (another good scene is in the beginning of the movie, after Lee takes pictures of the suicide bombing, the first thing on her mind is that the wi-fi is slow and she cant upload her pictures). What I loved about the movie the most is, what i perceived, as a lack of bias - they never say "this is wrong/evil/bad", its up to the viewer to decide. Like the gas station scene, the people defending it are doing it for their own safety but at the same time the looters they were torturing were also people just trying to survive and resorting to thievery as they had no other choice. Every event, interaction that the journalist stumble upon shows two sides, in which each has their own motives, reasons to behave the way they did and its up to the viewer to decide what they think about what they were shown. If anything, the most biased thing in the movie was the refugee camp, being shown as a place of community, no violence or politics. If there was a reason to believe that the movie has a bias then it'd be that scene in particular.
So it seems like we actually agree that the only thing this movie is talking about is the impact of journalism, because there's nothing else here. I did mention there is something to be said for the open interpretation of war and that it's a worthy conversation but it's a conversation we could all have without seeing this movie. It's just kind of here.
@@UglyReview But if thats the case then why should people make any art or media in the first place? A conversation can be had about any topic without there being a piece of media to start it, so why even bother making it? Just like your review, we couldve had a conversation about whether civil war is a good movie or not without your review existing and yet you made it nonetheless
You make a very good point regarding the creation of media and art. Maybe the ultimate point of the movie was to start any conversation whatsoever. Maybe he was trying to show that our differences have pushed us so far apart that we don't remember why we started fighting and that it may lead to inevitable bloodshed. So maybe in a roundabout way it was all a good thing? Not sure, but my ten minute opinion is my ten minute opinion, and I do appreciate your feedback.
@@UglyReview I think the point of the movie is to start any conversation whatsoever, but i also think that there is a point its trying to get across, using the black and white pictures. Whenever Jessie takes a picture that is shown to us, its always a dead body, somebody actively dying or something destroyed - thats the black and white, no gray in-between topic of the movie - life and death. Life is always good (hence the refugee camp being portrayed in such a positive way) and death is always bad (basically the entire movie). Regardless, I also appreciate you engaging in the comments in a respectful manner (even though i was being pretty harsh in the first comment, i admit). And i don't think your opinion is invalid, theres definitely several reasons to dislike the movie, like the fact that you dont have to watch it to know whats it about, the trailer has basically everything. Or the use of AI generated images for their promotional material on Instagram. Its just i thought the points you brought up weren't good reasons to dislike the movie.
A big reason I started this channel is so I could have conversations with people about entertainment and culture. If you're a bit harsh thats fine, I didn't think you were trolling. If anything you've swayed me a little to your side.
I haven't seen the movie and will wait for streaming, but the lack of backstory for the conflict or character stories is a strength. In America, one side believes their guy is a gift from God to stop the forces of global corruption. The other side sees a pervert who sexually assaults women, walked in women's change rooms to stare at minors in various stages of undress and a business fraud. It doesn't matter in the real world, why should it matter in the movies? People will pick sides and not care what their side does. Looking for something deeper in the plot is like being upset with how Dexter ended. You spent 6 or whatever years cheering on the antics of a serial killer and somehow expected satisfaction when it ends? Same with a second Civil War in America. If it happens it will be a the wealthiest people in the history of humanity fighting over the idea that their guy can improve your life 1% and no one will care that they will lose it all.
I understand your point but from a strictly dramatic entertainment point of view this movie is empty. In terms of reality I tend to agree with your statement, that it won't matter once the fireworks start, as we will he pitted against each other for stuff that really doesn't matter. The very, very subtle digs at reality in this film only work if you're going to go whole hog and tell us what you think, but Garland doesn't do that. I suppose one could argue it supports conversations like this one since it's so open to interpretation.
@@UglyReview Ya. What I wrote works if it is intentional. I should not use that empty feeling to mask bad story telling.
As a woman, I actually agree with your assessment that a man would have made a better main character for this. Even a short, scrappy man could believably have a surprising amount of strength/speed and ability to command these scenes. I'm about Sophia's height and have good strength and flexibility which just makes the many-on-one scenes less believable, unless she were to have cybernetic enhancements or magic or the Force. She doesn't. Just plot armor. I hate it, because it's a waste of a good physical role and a waste of what Sophia COULD bring--her background is in dance, I believe. I wouldn't mind a lead who has to rely on the environment, reflexes, and using opponents strengths against them. But no. No smooth, only pow. I'll keep an eye out for your future vids. Best of luck!
A wonderfully measured response. I think we are all sick and tired of men being written as women, and women being written as men. Thank you so much for the support.
Gunnar would have been a great character protagonist, if it wasn't way too similar to Luke Skywalker, but the idea of a simple farmer without any training nor knowledge of the universe allies with former nazi to save his little farm would have been great
True arguments, made in a whiny way.
How so? I am still learning and genuinely appreciate any constructive criticism.
@@UglyReview no stress. Basically, you try and funnel everything into one culture war bucket. But the truth is, theres no connection between liking trump and disliking kotaku. They want those two things tied together, but they arent. Disliking trump is popular and so is disliking kotaku
@@Thenadathor I don't believe I mentioned Trump in this video, if I did I was vamping and it was just there I guess. I don't think there is any connection between liking Trump and disliking Kotaku. I think that anyone with some common sense can see that these people are activists and don't care about gaming or responsibility. Many people hate Trump and many people hate Kotaku, I do not think the two are directly linked in and of themselves. I do however believe there is a lot of evidence that cultural Marxists fall into one gross bucket of groupthink and denial of reality and I think it's fairly evident. They go by the same playbook every single time and they all demand the same fielty, or else. I agree they are the ones who want to link Trump and the backlash they receive to only one side of the aisle but I also believe that most of us are smarter than that and can communicate in nuance. That being said I know I went hard on these clowns but they deserve it.
@@UglyReview your arguments are bad because you speak from Ego. Does that clafify?
I dont like seeing people who are right on the facts get all caught up in gorrilla chest beating. Makes u less persuasive
Btw in Ahsoka there was nothing wrong with the fight scenes. Why are you even mentioning it? Would have been a good video but you just ruined it.
Another little thing on top of the pile of bad choices: there is a pyramid shaped mountain above the village....behind it no flat area or other mountain range and yet there is a waterfall. I'm sorry but if there is snow on the top it's not melting but water coming down still... where is the river on that mountain? xD This is just a little detail but yet I just noticed how it does not make sence... a waterfal people. No wonder the story made no sence either. :D
Zack Snyder was never a brilliant filmmaker. Even the visual aspect that gave him his signiture as a Director was never credited to the true master: Larry Fong and far superrior writers than him. The moment he took upon himself to be the Michael Jordan of his own films and littelary pass & dunk he was exposed as what he really is: A director. Mediocare director period.
Yes. His good movies are the ones where he was the director and that's it. 300, Watchmen, Batman Vs Superman, he was surrounded by great special effects, writers and cinematographers. He may have unique artistic visions but he doesn't know how to pull it off and must lean on others. There's nothing wrong with that, but there is something wrong with people thinking he is solely responsible for that success.
Sorry about the weird framing of the video. I have discovered the issue and will have it corrected for future reviews. Still learning!
Good job dude!!
Thank you so much. I just watched yours and I love the idea of reviewing them together as a saga. You did a great job yourself.
Its been some time since they given us some marathon worthy material. Gotta appreciate it somehow.
I’m surprised this movie ever made it to releasing
It really is astonishing. I'm not kidding when I say that technically this is probably the worst thing I've ever seen. The only thing good about it is all of the unintentional comedy. Other than that it's barely a movie.

@@UglyReview Oh that'll give me nightmares, thanks 😂
Madame Web’s Pitch Meeting also used that joke, along with the movie being “miss-leading” instead of “female-led”.
@@narendramartosudarmo6112 Yes indeed
Indeed Painful!! Those dialogues made my brain and soul hurt. Tbh, that trailer alone made it clear how badly it was shot and how bad it will be 😂 now I get why no one cared about the costume design in the movie because they know the women will wear it for a few scenes lmao!
The dialogue is the gift that keeps on giving. My favorite line is when Ezekiel is sitting on the stairs playing with his fidget spinner and says "every day that passes brings me one step closer to my appointment with death, and you have done NOTHING!" 🤌
You forgot that the main character had a problem rolling a rock.
All the blurry and out-of-focus scenes had me thinking that I was watching a bootleg/pirated version!! Later learnt that the oil-smudged-lens effect was " Artistic " 🤦🤷♂️
I guess looking like shit and creating a kind of frustrating viewing experience for your audience is art?
26:34 To this I'd like to respond with Charlize Theron, Atomic Blonde.
Oh Atomic Blonde is a far, FAR better movie than this piece of crap. It's much more grounded in terms of the fighting as Charlize takes a ton of punishment, the fights are balanced, she misses some shots and isn't portrayed as invincible. It also has better acting, writing, directing... well everything really.
pump up your recording volume next time. i have all my sliders up and you're still very quiet. anyway, great video pal.
Seems to be the primary issue. I bumped up the gain by 25% for the next video so there should be a noticeable difference. I very much appreciate the support and stay tuned for more.

Great review.. this girl commando thing that hollywood is obsessed with is lame.. if you want to see a good strong female character that watch the seasoning house she is a great realistic character that takes on soldiers
I found myself laughing throughout (which was a good thing) and found this to be the best review of this "movie" which I regrettably renewed my Netflix account just to see (huge sigh). Smh. Anyway, subscribed! And pretty please keep up the great work:)
The audio was a little low, at least for me
I have been tinkering behind the scenes and I think we have the issue resolved. Stay tuned...
ZS is a good director but he’s not a writer, his best movies were written and produced by others.
Great video great points and a great voice. Keep em coming 👍
This movie is so bad it's actually hard to put into words. So, thanks.
I’m indifferent towards Zack Snyder movies and have never seen this one so I don’t really know if I’d like or not, but I do know that watching all the hilarious reviews it’s spawned has provided me with hours of entertainment and laughs.
The future in the movie looks very dated!
Good review except the misogynistic comments. I had to stop at arround 20 mins. It was cringe and just wrong
Could you please be more specific? What did you find misogynistic?
@@UglyReview I'm not gonna call it misogyny but I think some of what you said was worded poorly! for example I agreed with your comment on the fight scene. I'm definitely a blue-haired sjw type and halfway through the movie even I had to tell my bf "sofia boutella's character can easily be replaced by a man" because her being a woman adds absolutely nothing to the story. & yeah the fight scene could have been interesting (hell, even some parts of the movie) if we saw SB character play to her strengths (like be flexible, gymnastic etc) instead of fighting like a 100kg man (or even a 100kg woman arguably). Only thing i cringed at was "swordwoman" but different people have different humour. Great video btw, subbed. Definitely do more bad movie reviews
@@m1hfn2f I can't tell you how much I appreciate the honest feedback. Perhaps my words were chosen poorly but the sentiment is all the same. I am still growing into this channel so comments like this are invaluable learning opportunities for me moving forward.
