Broke my Royal Enfield Motorcycle, AGAIN!?

  • Gotta be the 4th time this has happened to poor old Daisy in 4 years? In today's video I take my friend Naim, who you may remember from our trips in France and Germany on our Royal Enfield Bullets, as a pillion passenger on Daisy. Unfortunately, disaster strikes before we reach our destination, Hook Lighthouse in Ireland, and Daisy's exhaust dislodges itself from the engine. Interesting sound, but would not recommend running the bike like this! Hope I can get her fixed properly soon 😢

    I had that problem for a while on my 2013 Bullet. I carried extra studs, nuts, and a wrench. But there was no way to stop it. Even red Loctite wouldn't work on something that got that hot. I finally replaced the studs and nuts with bolts, then drilled the heads of the bolts and safety wired them. Haven't had a problem since.

      Good to know it's not just me and poor Daisy having this problem! Think its the third or fourth time it's happened? Certainly the worst one yet though! I'll have to look into that 🤔

    Well bloody hell, mate, that was an adventure. Exhaust studs can be real buggers to fix. It's a breeding ground for corrosion. Locktite, safety wire, pinch nuts (like nyloc nuts, but no plastic to melt) can keep everything together. Now I gotta go check Oddball's nuts. Yes, I said it. :)

    Hahaha love the bells of doom tolling :) I heard the zorst note change and the unaccustomed back fire hahaha A similar thing happened to me years ago when my front pipe and the muffler parted after a spirited ride through the Galloway forest "raiders road" , a gravelly "off road" route.. Wotta racket it made, and lost power too, I had to lie on my back at the side of the road and kick the two parts together hahahaha what larks :) all good clean fun :) At least yer Ma could hear you miles away and get the kettle on for you :))))) Biking teacher you resilience and self reliance. Thread lock ????

    • @BulletWanderer
      @BulletWanderer  2 месяца назад

      Glad to hear the bells of doom aren't tolling unappreciated 🔔 Raiders Road looks phenomenal! These things are such a panic at the time, but once you've limped home with the problem loudly announcing your arrival, it's always good for a laugh and a sit down with a cup of tea 😁 Thought about thread lock, but the problem is I've had the bolts shear before, and if they sheared off on the engine side I'd be afraid I wouldn't be able to get them out! Maybe for the nuts, but maybe its good to let them 'breathe'? 🤔 It's a conundrum!

      ach it's all character building. My 1987 K75 stopped , just packed up at 40mph, I was with a lad riding a new GS thing and he was round eyed with panic. "How you gonna get home he said" , "same way as I got here" I said. He looked on in amazement when I nearly stripped the bike at the side of the road, found a broken earth wire and sorted it ( I carry a ton of bits and bobs and tools, crimped on a new connector, (told you I carry stuff" used my trust Gerber mulltitool, can recommend, and we were away in 20 minutes . More power to your arm young Sir :)@@BulletWanderer Oh and Dumfries and Galloway is a wee gem for bikes, not too far from you by ferry, BUT let's keep it secret right ? :)

    A couple of years ago wife and I were out and about with our 500 (sidecar) in SW Wisconsin (great roads !).... We didn't the " gong of doom " to foresee a Royal Enfield moment. We were riding along waving at the farmers and suddenly the muffler broke from the head pipe. The bracket from the muffler to the frame had lost the bolt. When we got back to the cities my guy at the dealership had a near new replacement from another bike that the owner had changed to a " performance pipe "... How much " performance " it produced is questionable. These one lung paint shakers need to be given the once over often.... Grab..shake everything.... . fenders.. exhaust... Now if I remove anything... I use Loc-tic on bolts and nuts unless it's an adjustment piece. And a suggestion for us out of towners.... when you mention going between cities ... possible add... ( 25 miles ) ,,, on the screen .. ? Great vid.... keep Daisy going. 😎

    Very foolish to keep riding when it was obvious the exhaust was starting to blow,if you’d have checked it out at the first sound difference you’d have been able to fix it quickly and not lost any fixings ( copper exhaust pinch nuts are the best for this application)👍🏻

    You unlocked a new feature: Chortle Mode. When I took my exhaust off to fix the rear brake lever, there's a copper crush washer that had to be replaced, or it will sound throaty.

    • @BulletWanderer
      @BulletWanderer  2 месяца назад +1

      "Chortle Mode" 😆I see, does that copper crush washer go between the exhaust pipe and the engine itself, or the collar and the exhaust pipe? 🤔 Unless she spat it out during this video (its the first time she fully ejected the exhaust!), I don't think I remember seeing one there before.

    • @MrMomo182
      @MrMomo182 2 месяца назад

      @@BulletWandererit sits inside the exhaust head and the pipe squashes it. We tried reusing the old one, and it wouldn't tighten up properly and kept making that noise until we got a new one on. I just watched a vid installing Hitchcock pipe and they did same thing, can't remember who thought. Cheers, Bullet Wanderer.

    • @maskedavenger2578

      @@MrMomo182If you haven’t a replacement exhaust header pipe to cylinder head gasket , use some exhaust paste, smeared on the existing gasket . The heat of the engine running will harden & help the old gasket to seal the header pipe & exhaust port on cylinder head . I have done this few times on various motorcycles for decades . 👍

    Ah, a soon you said "she seems louder, but maybe I imagined it", I knew you didn't imagine it. Had it a few times with Badger and I stopped to check out the exhaust. I could always give the bolts a bit of tight up, but the loudness would persist - typical blown exhaust gasket issue and then with the extra play, the bolts like to vibrate themselves off.
    I once crafted a roadside gasket by stripping of the seal rope of an abandoned stove door, teasing out a few strands and with some grease from the drive chain made then sticky and lined the inside of the exhaust's port. It held for 500 km until I replaced it with a proper gasket.
    Here's what I did to stop blowing out the gaskets: Stopped using the standard gaskets and replace them with a copper one (no more blow outs!) As usual I ordered 10 of them from India making their price per piece a whole lot cheaper then ordering a single one from mr H. And then safe but sure put on an extra nut to lock the nuts. Happy days after that!

    • @BulletWanderer
      @BulletWanderer  2 месяца назад +2

    Nice video (and view for that matter, with all the weather and gopro shenanigans). By the way (I'm not 100% sure but) I guess that Nyloc nut is not supposed to be used where heat is involved (although in an emergency as it was the case here it doesn't matter all that much).

      @BulletWanderer  2 месяца назад +2

    @yashaybhosle2313 2 месяца назад +1

    Just my observation.
    You throttle very hard like fast bikes.
    And as this is not stock exhaust you throttle hard to hear that thump sound.
    Also spark plug or engine oil levels is the issue I doubt.
    You have a nice bikers group.
    BSA was awesome but ❤ for bullet always.

    • @BulletWanderer
      @BulletWanderer  2 месяца назад +1

      Normally I don't throttle so hard, but today riding pillion (And I presume cos of the spark plug issue), I was throttling extra hard, and paid the price! Engine oil levels should be fine as I recently checked it, but definitely think spark plug was a big culprit for this. Agree with you there, wouldn't trade my Bullet for anything, issues and all. 😁

  • @MsDenver2
    @MsDenver2 2 месяца назад +1

    How on earth did that come loose??

    • @BulletWanderer
      @BulletWanderer  2 месяца назад +2

      Think it was down to needing a new spark plug, and because of that I was over-revving the engine, and also having a passenger meant extra revving anyways, all this putting extra vibrations on the parts and resulting in the two bolts failing to hold the exhaust collar 😅 If I replaced the spark plug, I suspect it may not have happened at all!

The gent dedicates it mostly to maintenance, but there is also preventative maintenance too. All gleaned from his personal Experiance owning something like 15 Bullets & C5's. One of the aspects I admire most about your videos is that you keep it real, and post the positive along with the negatives. Keep up the good work and quality of your work!
