I saw Patrick Patterson play once, vs NZ at Christchurch in 1987. He was reputed to be the world's fastest at that time. Hard to express just how fast though. The keeper (Dujon) was standing at least 30 yards back from the stumps, and the ball was rising when it got to him. Watched from from the stands for a few overs at mid-wicket area. The pace of the ball... like a cruise missile. Such power! This was a side with Joel Garner and Courtney Walsh who were exceptional bowlers, but Patterson was way faster.
This video was beautiful to watch. I especially like how clean the footage was - they must have used the master tapes.

They asked him who was the fastest bowler you've ever kept to, and he said... Patrick Patterson. So he must've been more deadlier than Ambrose. Even tho ol' Curtly was just starting his career.

Saw Patterson play one time only at Old Trafford for Lancashire against Yorkshire on the first day of a county game in 85 . The ground was almost empty. He took 7 for 77 , steaming in from the pavilion end . Most of those 77 runs were edges and thick edges through the slips and gully area for boundaries with no third man . He completely blew Yorkshire away . A long time ago indeed , but I have never forgotten it.

I saw him bowl in 1985 at the Queens Park Oval. It was a regional 50 over game, and he was bowling to Phil Simmons. He ran up from the Pavilion end and unleashed a ball that was outside off stump. It was left alone by Simmons and went through to Dujon. But I never saw it go down the pitch. I have seen Marshall, Garner, Ambrose, Walsh, Winston Davis, Wayne Daniel and Holding (at the end of his career) bowl in person, and Patterson was the fastest I have ever seen

Holding was faster, especially between 1976 and 1981. Andy Roberts was recorded at 99mph. Wes Hall and Roy Gilchrist were fast, too.
Jeff Dujon began wicket-keeping for West Indies in the 3rd test of the 1981/1982 test series between West indies and Australia. This test was played in 1982.
Holding was at his peak between 1976 and 1981. Imran Khan mentioned that Holding's peak was five years.

Greg Chappell retired in January 1984 at age 35 and a half, but if there had been no world series cricket he would not have played anywhere near that long because even by the time WSC came along when he was still in his late 20s, it was getting harder and harder to justify playing cricket when it was not professional but taking up more and more of an elite player's time none the less.

For the young kids watching this for the first time. That's a bowler bowling upwards of 150 kmph and inswinging with seam movement before people started knitting seams like the way they do with the duke and kookaburra today. Patterson and Marshall are probably the only two who could in their heyday swing the ball upwards of 150 kmph consistently.

I saw patterson run through the indian batting lineup in 1987 - 88 series against India . On Indian wickets he was generating pace and bounce which no other bowler in the series could . I remember a Sportstar magazine released during this series. On the cover was Patrick Patterson and the heading said " Partrick Batterson "

I watched that series as well on our B/W TV set. The hindi commentator remarked on patterson's run-up saying look at him take those small strides leading up to the vicious fast run up, akin to how a tiger or lion prepares to catch it's prey..Pat's career was short lived because of injuries and hence faded away with Walsh and Ambrose taking over

Each fast bowler has his own style and technique of
Developing speed. The strategy is horning those skills
By learning speed with control. The fastest does not necessarily
Makes you the best. Speed with control is the master.
WI had a fast bowler named Uton Dowe. VERRY fast
But wild. Sprayed the ball all over the place . Maybe one
Dangerous ball per over. He got beaten out of cricket
By class batsmen. You want control like Bumrah
Accuracy like Ambrose, speed like Shaun Taite,
Bounce like Garner, to be in a class of your own.

I still remember him bowling lightening fast at Delhi test 1987 on TV. He bowled a bowl outside the offstump at 95+ miles to Raman Lamba the opener. The bowl cut sharply inside and Raman was just lifting his bat but his offstump was rooted out. India was all-out at 75 runs.
Then in 1987 world cup due to the atleast 14 overs in an hour rule, he cut short his runup but to get the rythem he drummed his feet over the ground before starting the runup.
What a fast bowler he was

      Wrong..that innings Davis bowled him
Lamba was scattered in the 2nd innings by Patterson..
I remember lamba was replaced by amarnath n then lamba came back in the 7th odi, again falling lbw to Patterson..
That was the sad end to an opener's short career where he could hit sixes over covers off fast bowlers.
He did play occasionally on ODIs after that, but by now bowlers knew he would fall to fast inswing.
